General Software Discussion / Re: Maybe Vista doesn't suck?
« Last post by Darwin on November 21, 2007, 06:51 PM »
So mmmmaybe (Ralf rummages around in his colon, *pop*) Windows 7 comes out in late 2009.

Now there's an image to take with me to the dinner table!

Mouser's idea looks good - export the registry file once you've set things the way you want them and then have it automatically run on system start. Of course, if you're like me this might work but it will still drive you to distraction because it shouldn't have to be like this! I'm afraid I don't have any great ideas other than to have you look at your security apps - do you have anything running that might be blocking writes to the registry? In the past I had problems with RegDefend and Tenebril's SpyCatcher resetting registry settings on each boot. Drove me nuts until I traced it down.

Just a thought...

fodder - in my (limited) experience, disabling the Aero GUI and the themes service and running Vista in classic mode does little to help the resource issue that you are referring to. Granted I gave up before tweaking the GUI beyond that (ie hadn't gone into the relevant diaologue to turn off the rest of the non-essential eye candy like animated wnidows and fading tooltips in and out, etc. but still... Found it to be unbearably slow given the notebook that it was running on (Core 2 Duo with 2GB RAM and 128 MB dedicated video memory).

General Software Discussion / Re: SpySweeper from Webroot, trustworthy?
« Last post by Darwin on November 21, 2007, 05:16 PM »
Interesting. Spysweeper with Antivirus is well behaved on my system and has been trouble free. I note, though, that there are a lot of people who have had bad experiences with v. 5.5, so I guess I am lucky. I certainly have no complaints about its performance in either the antispyware or the antivirus "spheres". Quite the contrary - I've been very happy with it.

You don't drive in Seoul, do you Renegade? I lived there for four years and there is no way in H-E- double hockey sticks I was ever going to get behind the wheel (being a manly man I let my wife do all the driving!). I figured that if I did it would not be long before I wound up on the wrong side of the law, with blood on my hands. Crazy!

Yeah - thanks for clarifying that, Chris. That was the point I was trying to make: that this free offer is for a newer, more feature rich, version than the one that mouser raved about in June 2005

I would say, that despite all the scientology stuff and dating Nicole Kidman for so long, Tom Cruise is still a good actor, with quite some good movies in his career. Mel Gibson, on the other side... he lost it when he started directing.

Hey, this is not the topic at hand. Ya know guys, if you're "cheating" on your loved ones, be careful to cheat on the Wii as well. Yes, that includes cheating in Wii Sports, hitting the other guy with the controller will do ;D

I'm not concerned about Tom Cruise's acting ability (I've always found him rather one dimensional with litlle range, actually) - what put me over the edge was his attack on Brooke Shields and other of his remarks subsequentto that, which have led me to conclude that this is not someone who I am willing to continue to reward by paying to see him perform - this includes his movies when they come on tv. I won't watch them because I won't contribute to ratings that might encourage the channel to pay for more of his movies, driving his market value up, so to speak. He's a condescending, preening, wee little man who presumes to lecture other people on subjects he's not qualified to have an opinion on, let alone spout off about. Yes, I know, I could be describing myself, but I don't have a captive audience willing to hang on my every word. Mel Gibson - drunken, debauched, self righteous, anti-semite. Ugly. Nope, won't be contributing the Gibson family scholarship fund, either.

Now, back on topic: I like the way you think, Lashiec! Hitting the other guy with the controller - nice!

PS mouser's screencasting review gave two enthusiastic thumbs up to Camtasia 2.

Hmm... interesting (Darwin will say and do anything for a cookie, virtual or otherwise). I take it that mousesensitivity is a must-have feature for you? I ask because I finally gave up on synaptics and uninstalled their software and drivers. My notebook's touchpad seems just fine to me, but maybe I'm not too fussy about these things?

Anyway, as the first respondent, I'll take the liberty of stating the obvious and suggesting that you do what you no doubt have already done: uninstall all the synaptics software that you can find and reboot. Before re-installing, see if the touchpad is functional without it - mine is, but then I don't have those scroll-bar thingies on mine - and check the mouse applet in the control panel to see what configuration options are available to you now. You might find that things are fine without Synaptics. If not, reinstall and reboot and try again.

Good luck!

DOH! Mouser takes first place in the response rate race. Does this mean he gets a bigger cookie? Bummed.

Sweet! I just checked mouser's screencasting review, and this free version is the "new and improved" one due out later in the month the review was done  I really don't need this, but it's installed now! Not too tempted to upgrade ($149 US) but will be comparing it to BBFlashback Pro.

To be honest, fodder, neither Mel nor Tom, have appeared in anything in years that I'm even remotely interested in... so noble as my stand sounds, it's not much of a sacrifice and there's really no temptation to pirate anything!

I don't think an elephant gun will do it - you're going to need more firepower than that. These things were also marine creatures, so think in terms of nuclear submarines and torpedoes.

Sounds good to me, Ralf! Bring it on! Tom Cruise is on my list of those actors whose films I WILL NOT see out of protest for his idiocy off-screen. Why reward twits like him and Mel Gibson at the box office? Anyway, point is off-colour references to Tom Cruise will be well-received!

Dang! I wish I'd known about this before I bought BBFlashback... Not that I'm not happy with BBFlashback, but FREE has a nice ring to it! Thanks for posting this, Chris, downloading as I type this (what can I say? I'm a software junkie).

Can't help myself (though I'll have to - it's time to get on with the day) here's an interesting discussion of a topic that I cover every winter session in Intro to Archaeology (funny how the "news" is often the "olds"). It's a report of recent archaeological evidence supporting earlier evidence that the Black Sea flooded 8500 years ago and forced farmers living in the region to flee westward, taking agriculture with them. It is also thought to explain the prevalence of flood stories in cultures from around the Mediterranean, including Noah's Ark. Very interesting (and very techy too - Radiocarbon and Dendrochronlogical dating).

Ha, ha, I just dropped back in here to update my post with the same info - I tried it too - the only non M$ app it found was SnagIt. It's of dubious utility even as a free install (it won't last on my machine longer than it takes me to type this post...) but paying $20 for it would be insane.

OK, one more and then I'll be a good boy and try to get back on the techy wagon (but believe me, the technology behind this stuff is freakin' amazing!). Anyway, the title says it all. This is an interesting pop-science piece that discusses what human geneticists have been discovering for 20 years or more - that some big parts of our genome have been "incorporated" from outside - we are what we used to be infected by!

Crap! I didn't even know that the US, Canada's good neighbour to the south, had adopted a $1 coiin for general circulation.
Read on, though, for an interesting discussion of the origins of currency and the social effect that it had.
