Sorry, I should have been more clear. I do it all the time using my Google Voice number through Google Talk.

Well, it's actually been renamed to Google Hangouts. But basically, just open up Gmail or Google+ and Hangouts, then make a call to a phone.

Google+/Hangouts:

Gmail/Hangouts:

I've been doing this for at least two years. I don't even have phone service most of the time. I just use Google Voice when I'm connected to the internet (even on my Android phone).

Google Voice?

Or some sort of bluetooth headset thingy?

Living Room / Re: Windows Phone 8 (lumia 920) vs. Android 4.4 Kitkat (Nexus 5)
« Last post by Deozaan on November 11, 2013, 04:19 PM »
And it seems the Nexus 5 works on almost all carriers in the USA. But not Verizon.

Good to know. I like the idea of getting a Nexus 5. Problem is my Nexus S is still holding it's own. Only just but not bad enough to justify upgrading.

Seems to be true.  A friend of mine has an 18-month old nexus (samsung?) and it is still very fine.  These Nexus phones really hold up well over the months compared to some other android devices I've used.  And the geek community develops so many things for them, so there's all these fixes for things.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexusw is 2 years old. Your friend may have gotten it 18 months ago, but the Galaxy Nexus was released in November 2011. It's the phone I have, and it's still fairly decent. But I'm starting to feel the lack of storage and the slowness of the device. And sadly Google has announced it won't be getting OS updates anymore, so it may be time to get a Nexus 5 soon. (c:

It sounds like you are saying "an athema".

That would certainly make for an interesting conversation:

athema: (n) A ceremonial knife, specifically a sharpened condor or llama bone. SAI

DC Gamer Club / Re: A Large Database Of Free Games
« Last post by Deozaan on November 07, 2013, 03:31 PM »
It used to be free. But it went commercial.

Interestingly enough, the link to the free version (v1.1.1) still works on the free games database.

I played the "original" PoP reboot on the Gamecube back in the day. I think it was called Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. I enjoyed it. I finished it, too. But there were some situations which felt cheap (as in unfair), like how enemies could knock you down and then while the animation was playing of your character getting up again (and you are unable to control your character at all in this time) they could hit you again and knock you down again, essentially causing you to die at full health because you got stuck in a loop of getting knocked over repeatedly and there was nothing you could do about it if you didn't have enough sand to rewind time enough. )c:

As I said, I did complete it, and I enjoyed it overall.

But after that they took the series and tried to get too "edgy" and "mature" for me, which actually resulted in the typical adolescent idea of maturity and edginess, i.e., harder/louder music, nudity, swearing, and an angrier protagonist.

No thanks.

I lost interest in the franchise after that.

General Software Discussion / Re: LastPass - What are your thoughts?
« Last post by Deozaan on November 07, 2013, 02:47 PM »
The latest LastPass extension version has an annoying feature enabled out of the gate, where it shows matching sites in the extension as if it were a number of notifications. Thankfully this is easily disabled from the options.

Unforunately, the latest mobile app version of LastPass has a similarly annoying feature which isn't so easily disabled. In the past, you were able to disable the built-in LastPass browser so that you could continue to use your device's preferred/default browser. The latest version has re-enabled the LastPass browser and adopted a "Tabbed" view. Interestingly, the tabbed view can be disabled on my phone, but not on my tablet. But the browser itself cannot be disabled. This results in annoying "what do you want to open this link in?" prompts. Even after selecting "Always" use my default browser, I still get prompted which one to use occasionally. But I think that's because of the way Android parses the links.

Overall I have been really happy with my LastPass experience and the service itself. That said, I don't want them to try to provide me with a browser on my mobile devices. I just want access to my password vault. That's all.
3883
That's OK. I've had plenty of opportunity to pick up PoP in Steam sales in the past. But I wasn't ever *that* interested. So I don't mind still not having it. Thanks though.

So why start the sentence with 'even when their'?

Let's see the full sentence:

Strangest of all was the ability of infected machines to transmit small amounts of network data with other infected machines even when their power cords and Ethernet cables were unplugged and their Wi-Fi and Bluetooth cards were removed.

That means the infected machines could transmit small amounts of network data to other infected machines. Even machines with power cords unplugged (running on battery). And with Ethernet cables unplugged. And with their Wi-Fi and Bluetooth cards removed.

The idea was that possibly it was transmitting data through the power line, so they made sure to run it on battery without the power cord plugged into the wall. They also disconnected all other standard networking hardware.
3885
"even when their power cords ... were removed"

Any discussion after this?

In other words, even when they were running on battery.

I'm pretty sure this site is safe:

http://goldtoken.com/

I used to be a regular there.

You can also check out sites like Kongregate and MiniClip. I'd trust Kongregate, but I haven't used MiniClip enough in the past to confidently say it's absolutely safe, though I think it probably is.

Clicking the image just popped up a blank window. I tried disabling my Ghostery blocker in case I had somehow blocked the script that generates the key, but still nothing happened. Did I just get a virus?

Old IT saying: if data isn't stored in at least three different locations, it doesn't really exist.

Translation to your situation: keep a copy off your device somewhere as well, or you may find yourself in the same situation again.

I've heard it similarly said:

"Two is one; one is none."

Translation: If you only have one of something, Murphy's Law dictates it will break down (get lost/destroyed, etc.) at just the wrong moment and then you won't have any of that something. So be prepared and have a backup so that when one breaks, you still have one.
3890
Ah. This also explains Humble Bundle recently changing how they handle their Steam key redemption. I didn't realize key reselling was such a problem. )c:

I've got lots of spare Steam keys sitting around and never thought to sell them.

You could also use something like Titanium Backup (requires root) to make backups of your Launcher app, which in theory should include widgets and other shortcuts.

This won't help you get back your lost icons, but it could help prevent loss in the future.

Second mirror works, though I wouldn't mind having an MD5 checksum or something to make sure it's the same thing and not swapped with a demo or something. (c;

Heh we need a LITTLE more info than that!

It will be a shmup.

I've taken a few screenshots and videos while working out some things so far. Maybe I'll share them. Just know that none of this is actually gameplay. It's just trying to get things up and running.

It will be something else.

*Very* professionally filmed, which I think would argue for all actors. Either way, brilliantly made and done. I rarely laugh out loud at anything, and I was in stitches at that - in spite of knowing (roughly) what was coming.

Disclaimer: YMMV :P

Well they ... uh.. *said* it was filled with actors! I think there's a good chance that they ran the "prank" for like 2-3 customers at a time, then "closed for lunch" and reset it all.

Right, but the question was whether or not the "customers" were also actors who were in on it.

Blasteroids Death.jpg Blasteroids Game Over.jpg

Usage
Installation
Unzip and run the executable. At least on Windows, and probably similar for OSX.
On Linux you'll need to set the permissions for the x86 or x86_64 files to allow them to run as executables before you can play.

Using the Application
Click the mouse to aim and shoot.
You can also press the spacebar instead of clicking.
Press Escape while in game to bring up the menu.

Uninstallation
Delete the directory containing the game files (and all subdirectories).
Some information (high scores, volume settings, etc.) is saved to registry or equivalent, which on Windows is: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Deozaan/Blasteroids

Tips
You get an extra life as your score increases. Lives are score multipliers, so try not to die much to maximize your score!
Try not to blast asteroids all willy nilly! Use some strategy. Each time you break a larger asteroid down into smaller ones, try to quickly destroy the smaller ones before breaking down more larger asteroids.
Don't die.

Known Issues
None

Thanks @Deozaan. Do you think you might be in a position to do a mini-review of BitTorrent Sync?

Possibly. But the trouble is finding (read: making) the time for it.

So here's my mini-mini-review:

I'm finding BitTorrent Sync to be mighty useful.

http://labs.bittorre...xperiments/sync.html

You can set up any folder (and multiple folders as well!) on your computer to be shared and synced with all of your devices or even with other people. It's private, encrypted, etc. It has apps for iOS and Android. And the only storage limit is the size of your hard drive.

This is a fun one. WoW's composer Jason Hayes has put together a group of talented professional musicians who will be arranging and performing music from famous computer games. The group is called Critical Hit - and this is their first video, the theme to Angry Birds.

That was fun to watch. Personally I never liked the Angry Birds theme, but the Critical Hit's rendition almost redeemed it.
