Living Room / Re: Probably the single best idea I've seen in a *very* long time.
« Last post by Renegade on January 06, 2013, 09:12 AM »
I rarely use my phone here. Most of my communications are by email and Skype (chat, Skype to phone, video chat).

But yeah, it's kind of annoying when people are addicted to their phones. I don't answer my phone when I'm busy talking with someone - it just shows that I value their time and company. But, whatever. People can do whatever they want, and even better if they pay the bill! (Think I'd order another beer or 3 at that point! :P )

I've used it for a long time, and quite heavily, and it works very well.

Living Room / Charging for Links to Your Site?
« Last post by Renegade on January 06, 2013, 08:58 AM »
Looks like some news papers are charging for links to their sites:

http://drudgegae.iav...e-over-sharing-links

http://www.france24....e-over-sharing-links

The first link there is just linking from one news site to another, so I thought it would be ironically appropriate. ;)

The body representing Ireland's leading newspapers was forced to defend the way it enforces copyright law on Friday after revelations that it charges websites that link to its articles.

National Newspapers of Ireland (NNI), which represents 16 of the most popular national papers, said it believed "that the display and transmission of links does constitute an infringement of copyright" under current Irish law.

However, it insisted that "there is a distinction between the sending and receipt of links for personal use on the one hand and the sending and receipt of links for commercial purposes on the other".

"NNI and its newspaper members never have had any difficulty with people displaying links for personal use," it said in a statement.

The row was sparked by the revelation that Women's Aid, a charity combatting domestic violence, had been told by an NNI subsidiary that it must pay 300 euros ($400) to display up to five links to newspaper articles on its website.

The fees relate to hypertext links to the original article on a newspaper's website, not a reproduction of the text -- either totally or partially.

The case was highlighted by Dublin-based solicitor for Women's Aid, Simon McGarr, in a blog entry on Sunday entitled, "2012: The year Irish newspapers tried to destroy the web."

He said NNI sub-company Newspaper Licensing Ireland Limited (NLI) told Women's Aid that the rates increased to 1,350 euros for displaying 26 to 50 links, while the cost for 50 or more was "negotiable".

If anyone is interested, if you want to link to any of my sites, I promise not to charge you for it. In fact, I'll thank you! :D

I'd ask them what software they were using to create the ZIP files first. My initial reaction would be to assume that the ZIP files are the real culprits, and that 7-zip simply has better error checking than the default Windows zip program.

Otherwise, this might help as a starting point:

^^ It's not like ads really serve anyone except the advertisers. I think it was Tinman that pointed out that there is no truth in advertising. I don't particularly have all that much sympathy for purely ad supported businesses. If the product were that good, people would simply pay for it. There are other ways to make money without ads. Maybe they should stop whining and start trying to think about their business.

Vanilla Android 4.x is really great. Not so sure about the vendor-customized ROMs. )c:

Vendor-specific is already here with SDKs for proprietary hardware. One of the reasons to hope that the open systems do well. We'll see though.

Thanks for sharing the good news -- I didn't find an upgrade on the Note to be a plus and consequently held off on upgrading an SGT 10.1 here.

Now that I've heard some good news, may be I will go through with it :)

There are some UI changes, like repositioned elements, a slightly different way to do this/that/the other thing, but so far I've not noticed anything that's difficult or frustrating. How you add app shortcuts to the main home screens is different, and I've had to re-add them now, but meh, not really a huge worry. The smoothness and speed is definitely worth it. :D

But I like to pledge rather than just show up so that it gives sort of a head count.

I have this problem with my time being soaked up out of the blue for reasons that I couldn't possibly have predicted, so, I'm really reluctant to jump in ahead of time and promise something. :(

:D Testing is one of those things that I do as I go along, and then again at the end. You can never really test everything, unless you have a LOT of time and money to do it. Hardware, drivers, etc. etc. etc. It never ends. I had an MP3 playback error years ago... it was a driver issue that I couldn't do anything about - thank god it's gone now.

For ideas, I usually just scratch an itch. ;D

I'd like to hear from other developers of NANY applications.

What kinds of things do you think about?

My main thought is that I won't be able to deliver for one reason or another.

I have one more application that I'm almost finished, but not done yet, and glad that I didn't pledge it as I wouldn't have made the deadline. (An Android application.)

So, what kinds of things do you think about for NANY?

Well, everyone has been through it. You fart around and waste time and then you finally find the answer...

What pisses me off is API methods that don't work. I spend hours trying to do what should take minutes.

Here's a recent example:

Code: C# [Select]
  1. // This doesn't fucking work:
  2. //wv.LoadData (html, "text/html", null);
  3. // Spent fucking hours trying to get around that shit when I finally found this:
  4. // http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3312643/android-webview-utf-8-not-showing
  5. // Jesus fuck... why can't shit just work?
  6. wv.LoadDataWithBaseURL (null, html, "text/html", "utf-8", null);

Yes. That is what I write in my code. Or at least before I release any code that is open.

It's just damn annoying to waste so much time on something that has been in since API level 1 and I'm testing at level 12. Sheesh...

Thing is, this kind of stuff happens pretty regularly. :(

And now for something completely different! :P

This is kind of wildly off-topic, but it's still damn funny (well, kind of unfunny too) and completely on-topic for naming conventions:

http://www.thestar.c...proved-names-allowed

Girl fights government for right to use name given by her mother; only ‘approved’ names allowed

REYKJAVIK, ICELAND—Call her the girl with no name.

A 15-year-old is suing the Icelandic state for the right to legally use the name given to her by her mother. The problem? Blaer, which means “light breeze” in Icelandic, is not on a list approved by the government.

Like a handful of other countries, including Germany and Denmark, Iceland has official rules about what a baby can be named. In a country comfortable with a firm state role, most people don’t question the Personal Names Register, a list of 1,712 male names and 1,853 female names that fit Icelandic grammar and pronunciation rules and that officials maintain will protect children from embarrassment. Parents can take from the list or apply to a special committee that has the power to say yea or nay.

In Blaer’s case, her mother said she learned the name wasn’t on the register only after the priest who baptized the child later informed her he had mistakenly allowed it.

“I had no idea that the name wasn’t on the list, the famous list of names that you can choose from,” said Bjork Eidsdottir, adding she knew a Blaer whose name was accepted in 1973.

This time, the panel turned it down on the grounds that the word Blaer takes a masculine article, despite the fact that it was used for a female character in a novel by Iceland’s revered Nobel Prize-winning author Halldor Laxness.

Given names are even more significant in tiny Iceland that in many other countries: Everyone is listed in the phone book by their first names. Surnames are based on a parent’s given name. Even the president, Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, is addressed simply as Olafur.

Blaer is identified as “Stulka” — or “girl” — on all her official documents, which has led to years of frustration as she has had to explain the whole story at the bank, renewing her passport and dealing with the country’s bureaucracy.

Her mother is hoping that will change with her suit, the first time someone has challenged a names committee decision in court.

I had no idea that Iceland, Denmark and Germany were strict about what you can name your kid. Just seems bizarre to me.

I figured that a bit of naming insanity would serve as a bit of comic relief that some would find pseudo-related and humourous.

I tried to get my wife to agree to let me name our daughter "Goddess", but... well... I failed. :P "God" if a boy, and "Goddess" if a girl. ;D

Anyways, back to your regularly scheduled thread. :)

Decoupling the device, software (OS), carrier, and app distribution (app stores) is an absolute win for the consumer, and a loss for the carriers, device manufacturers, and proprietary OSes because then they have to compete harder for consumer dollars. Even for the Blackberry model of secure communications, an open system would create new opportunities for secure communications providers and secure storage providers.

Every open device that hits the market chips away at the closed and proprietary models where freedom is at their discretion.

While Canonical may be profit motivated, it's still a move in the right direction.

Anyways, I'm hopeful that this will all turn out well for people. I suppose that means I hope that it turns out badly for those with vested interests in restricting the markets. :P

"how about a ubuntu phone made by kingston, that i take to at&t and activate." - OK, you want phone and carrier to be separated, that's something that calls for regulation.

I don't know why laws would be needed. It only takes 1 upstart to set the dominoes in motion, and if they weren't set in motion, you could basically be guaranteed that there was an illegal cartel behind the scenes rigging the market. But, it's not like those kinds of investigations are ever pursued - as long as you're a big company, you can do whatever you want with impunity. e.g. HSBC. (Too many examples there.)
