General Software Discussion / Re: extracting info from pdf

If you could give an example pdf to do this operation, perhaps we all could experiment with the various tools each of us has.
-plus of course a much more precise description of what the job is.

I removed both K-Lite and MPC-HC when I installed KMPlayer
- and so far there have been no conflicts  ;)

-until now. It seems KMPlayer doesn't support .M4V video format.

sorry; the first video was broken. M4V is supported.

Must it be a genuine video with music, or can it be just a gif animation with speech audio? If the latter, Microsoft HTML Help Workshop will do.

General Software Discussion / WebDrive: integrate your homepage and PC/Mac
« Last post by Curt on October 02, 2010, 05:55 AM »
WebDrive for Windows. Map a Windows drive letter to FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, Amazon S3, and FrontPage Servers : $69 incl 1 year of updates, $85 with 2 yrs of updates.

WebDrive for Macintosh OS/X. Mount SFTP, WebDAV, FTPS, FTP or GroupDrive Servers as a local device : $35 /1 year of updates, and $50 /2 yrs of updates.

http://www.southrive.../webdrive/index.html

contents.gif

WebDrive will integrate your homepage with your desktop, making it just another (secure) local drive. This way you can search, edit, DOS-prompt, replace, your homepage files, just as any other local drive / folder / file.

http://www.southrive...tdemonstrations.html

WebDrive is more than just an FTP Client.

Unlike a typical FTP client, WebDrive allows you to open and edit server-based files without the additional step of downloading the file. Using a simple wizard, you assign a network drive letter to the FTP Server. By connecting through a virtual drive, there is no need to learn a separate FTP client interface. You access and edit files on the server the same way that you interact with files on your local PC.

WebDrive is the only FTP Client that supports additional protocols such as WebDAV, SFTP, FrontPage, and Amazon S3 and maps a drive letter to each of these servers.

Please select the type of computer below to get more information and a free trial of the WebDrive FTP Client. Choose your platform... Microsoft Windows / Macintosh OS X

wdmapdesktop_2.gif

Simple Set-up and Configuration

The WebDrive site manager makes it easy to define your connections. Just enter the server URL and your username and password and press "connect," to map the selected drive letter to your server. You can map different directories on the same server to unique drive letters. This provides easier access to frequently updated directories. You can also map unique drive letters to different server types - one drive to an SFTP server, one to a WebDAV server and another to an FTP server or to Amazon Web Services. This functionality is not available in typical FTP software. [screenshot]

Security Features

WebDrive has built-in support for the industry standard SSL protocol. When used in conjunction with secure WebDAV, FTP, FTPS, or SFTP servers, WebDrive will open an encrypted tunnel between the client computer and the remote server; giving you secure transmission of critical data over the Internet. WebDrive can also be used as an alternative to a corporate VPN. Install the WebDrive client and an SSL enabled server, and WebDrive can act as the VPN for your company; an efficient alternative to an expensive VPN and non-secure FTP client connections.

General Software Discussion / Outpost <7 being abandoned
« Last post by Curt on September 30, 2010, 02:41 PM »
In the previous newsletter we reminded you of Agnitum’s decision to stop updates and support for all Outpost versions older than 7.0 from October 1, 2010, and urged you to swap for the newest version — 7.0.3  (or upcoming 7.0.4). As the deadline comes closer we’ve been receiving tons of requests to give latecomers another month for consideration and action. So we do! Take a chance to migrate to the latest Outpost version — 7.0.3 (or 7.0.4) before November 1, 2010!

Users of older Outpost Pro versions (before 7.0) will no longer receive update services, including antivirus, antispyware, ad and site blocking, firewall rules, and host protection module updates.

I downloaded the GTL update .... the download was over 160MB, Oops!Backup is 17.2MB...

-ouch!!!

Reminds me very much of ABBYY Screenshot Reader being 200 MB, Boxoft Screen OCR being 10 MB, and they do the one and same thing...

I am downloading Oops now to see why I don't already have it ;-)

Blogging platform with no database required

FlatPress is a blogging platform that you can install and run on your own server or one that belongs to your ISP.  Unlike WordPress and some of the other industrial-strength systems, however, this one doesn´t require a database on the back end, since it stores all its data in plain old text files instead.

http://www.freedownl...no-database-required
-freedownloadaday

FlatPress is an open-source standard-compliant multi-lingual extensible blogging engine which does not require a DataBase Management System to work.

You don’t need MySQL because FlatPress stores all of its content on text files.

All you need is some web space supporting PHP4 (or later).

Features:

    * Standard-compliant (XHTML valid)
    * Plugin support
    * Widget system
    * Easy to customize with themes (powered by Smarty)

Does Oops!Backup fully support Unicode? The word 'Unicode' is not mentioned on their site, not even in the otherwise amazing user guide.

-some time ago I wanted to test Oops! but I never got past SyncBreeze. I really LIKE it, even though it is not a genuine back-up program but merely a synchronizer between a few folders. I must admit I almost never care to 'third-party'-back-up my computer, but of course Vista's back-up is running once a day.

http://www.syncbreez...roduct_versions.html

It is based on FlexTk File Manager Toolkit.

-yes, which is why it is even more disappointing that the program doesn't include a link to the download page. I have asked him to add it, of course, but he won't.

General Software Discussion / Re: Aqua Snap
« Last post by Curt on September 25, 2010, 01:02 PM »
The application works with Windows XP and Vista as well and does the same features.

AquaSnap is a simple freeware tool which brings in better features to the Windows 7 aero. AquaSnap makes the window management much more ergonomic: you can drag a window to the border of your desktop, and this window will be snapped and resized to fit one half of the screen. You can also drag this window to a corner, it will be snapped to fit one quarter.

Celebrate the seventh annual National Punctuation Day®
September 24, 2010

Congratulations, America! I would like for my country to also have such a day!
What's that: You didn't know about National Punctuation Day? Now you do!

http://www.nationalpunctuationday.com/

... our first National Punctuation Day® Haiku Contest, with the winners receiving a plethora of punctuation goodies.

Send your best 5-7-5 (syllables, that is) poetry to me at [email protected], and let the literary games begin! Haikus must be received by September 30 to be considered for prizes.

To get you started, here are a few haikus written by my friend Craig Harrison, one of the best sales and customer-service trainers—and prolific writers—I know.

Which colon to use?
Colon or semi-colon?
I’ll use a comma.

Exclamation points.
Some people just love to shout
In print and in speech.

Serial comma.
What is your philosophy?
To use or not to?

Raised by two parens
I’ve been bracketed since youth.
I’m an inside job.

Dot dot ellipses
The yada yada of print.
So on and so forth.

Punctuate or die.
What is a writer to do?
Good writers will know.

Colon-oscopy:
When my editor removes
My inflamed colon.

Exclamation points
And question marks together?
Only in comics.

The apostrophe:
Found on both sides of letters.
The right side and wrong.

Are you Brit or Yank?
Show me your quotation marks
And I’ll tell you which.

i’m ee cummings
i break punctuation rules.
that’s what poets do.

Em dash or en dash.
On typewriters it’s easy,
On keyboards, less so.

While I like to write,
Punctuation is a drag.
That’s for editors.

As a person it is always a good feeling to get a lifetime license - I am 'happy' that I have a Outpost Security Suite lifetime license. But as a software user, I know from experience that when the stream of NEW customers gets smaller/small, the author will lose the incitement to develop, without being paid - I also have lifetime licenses for programs that have been abandoned. So, for a small company like Sagelight, I will warn against lifetime licenses!!

Helicon can be trialed for 30 days without any limitations. The version from BdJ is 5.0 beta. Version 4.93.2 is FREE :-)

as of today:

Helicon Filter 5.0.9 Beta (18.06.2010)

My version stopped working, and with no updates available, Helicon has become useless to me.

Yes, I've tried to remove all of it, and re-install, to no avail.

... music icons ...

MP3ext

One problem is, that  the author already five years ago announced that he wouldn't be spending more time on this program of his, MP3ext, meaning that it hasn't been updated for Vista. Nevertheless it works okay with my Vista.

Another problem is a little worse: The various third party MP3 encoders that I have used are not fully being recognized by MP3ext, meaning that a number of, say, 256 kbps files, are showned as "Ext", which basically means MP3, but something may be wrong, and the sample frequency is unknown. However, I assume this also is due to the encoders.

In general, I can only recommend this program if you install this one first, and then install a newer / better MP3 "tool-tip" program like MediaInfo or what you have.
