Heh, that matrix video was kinda cute - I wonder why everybody keeps using Win9x BSOD screens, though? That's just soooo last millenium.

Sounds like a good amount of polishing changes :Thmbsup:

I just wish they would allow custom themes that aren't signed by MS... and of course also focus on performance, memory footprint, etc :)

oh nos! No way I'm clearing my FF cache, haven't done it since I upgraded to FF3. I find the inline history search really useful (47000+ entries and it's still very responsive :) )
A ctrl+F5 gets me the same result, FWIW. [search]
Umm, does clearing the cache clear your browsing history as well? I didn't think so?

General Software Discussion / Re: Open File Security Warning (Firefox)
« Last post by f0dder on February 26, 2009, 11:54 AM »
Ah, that other thread wasn't about the firefox-specific way to do it, though, so while I could've disabled it globally, it's not the same - a bit smaller stupid-badge for me, then :D

TheQwerty: yep, that'd work, but would still be an annoyance... and not much easier than simply saying "don't warn about this file again" first time you launch a downloaded file. One of the reasons my google-fu was unsuccessful was probably that I knew a bit too much about the problem - instead of trying "Open File Security Warning (Firefox)", my search query was "firefox alternate data streams" :graduate:

remove security warning firefox

works for me

Oh well, at least we now have a DC post about the issue. (Don't tell me there already was >_<)

Luvya, app :-*

Didn't know the IE setting would take care of FF as well (though it doesn't surprise me) - but it is nicer to have a FF-specific fix. Knew about a lot of the other stuff in the article, but it's nice to see people who are thorough and provide good and complete information - good find.

OK, this has been pissing me off for a while - the "Open File - Security Warning" dialog boxes when you've downloaded stuff off the internet. The warning was introduced with whatever Internet Explorer version, and uses NTFS Alternate Data Streams (probably the one called "Zone.Identifier:$DATA") to store the "this is a potential bad file" info. With FF2, everything was happyhappyjoy since it didn't write this crap, but FF3 does by default.

I've made a few quick but futile google attempts, but wasn't successful and have other things to do, so I was wondering if any of the bright minds of DonationCoder have figured out how to disable this? :)

General Software Discussion / Re: How much trouble is a 64-bit OS right now?
« Last post by f0dder on February 26, 2009, 12:20 AM »
Interesting move, 40hz!

This should probably work just fine. It's been my experience, though, that trying to run a full 64bit version of linux (ie., including userland) can be more trouble than it's worth. At least on gentoo, not everything is available for 64bit, and then you have to fiddle with running a mix of 64bit and 32bit software, which is somewhat more bothersome than doing the same on Windows...

You should definitely look into WiX. It's developed by MS staff, standalone or integrates into VS (though don't know about Express Editions). It allows you to build MSI files through a XML syntax.
Officially supported or "just" developed by MS staff?

I still hate .msi anyway, those installers are damnably slow.

If deployment is your only reason to purchase the pro version, I'd say don't - invest some time in learning another install tool instead. Might take some work, but it's going to be a better investment in the long term. And even though .msi sucks, I'm pretty sure there are 3rd party tools that support it.

Finished Programs / Re: RESTART PROGRAM AFTER CRASH
« Last post by f0dder on February 25, 2009, 02:08 PM »
Well, my idea would be making an app that launches the "watched-over" apps, and restart them if terminated - which is easy. But detecting intentional close vs. crash is the difficult part :)

Put an i7 in it and it wouldn't be cool at all. In fact, it would probably melt. ;D

General Software Discussion / Re: Password Protect File Or Folder?

Hm, there's a couple of things from Androsa's feature page that makes me wonder a bit...
*  AES - 256 bit / 192 bit / 128 bit
* TripleDES 192 bit
* DES 64 bit
Why oh why not just stick with AES-256?

Cryptography with password up to 256 bit (32 characters).
Does that mean they use your passphrase directly as encryption key? O_o

Also, keep in mind that with a program like this, you need to do a secure file wipe every time you've extracted/modified/re-inserted a file into a protected container, otherwise it will be possible to recover plaintext from your disk.

If you only monitor for "process isn't running anymore" (which would be relatively easy to do), it won't be possibly to terminate the process normally... If that isn't a problem, there's a couple of solutions.

If you only want to restart crashed applications, things get a bit more complicated, and you'd basically have to interface with the just-in-time debugging interface :)

Developer's Corner / Re: Microsoft releases SmallBasic for Newbie Programmers

Code re-use is simply re-using files - whether they're part of Windows or not (and originally in the Win9x days, the VB runtimes were not shipped with Windows).

And you don't need "a dozen of each DLL file" - only if you add something (or make changes) to it's interface.

.NET is a bit bad, I wonder why it's so big - and whether you need all the different .net versions or if eg. the 3.5 framework also supports all older versions.

Vista does include a lot of junk by default that most people don't need, which is a shame. And if your backup program doesn't know about hard- and symlinks, it's going to make a lot of duplicate data copies...
