Living Room / Re: Pirate My Film... Dot Com.

The really cool part to look for (maybe I'll check this weekend) is which CC licenses are used - if they allow Derivatives and Mashups.

I've been trying out this script. It gets to about 235 entries on the spreadsheet and then it stopped finding anything else.

No,
That is just ... epic. Will it make the next newsletter?  ;D

lol which version did you prefer?

Anybody else wrote any stories about Cody? - Would love to read them!
-Stephen66515 (May 04, 2012, 08:29 AM)

I'll savor both versions more over the weekend!

However, I have not written any stories about Cody because I don't yet see the License To Make Derivative Works from Mouser!

(And yes, this really is how bad these laws are trying to make the Copyright situation, and No, there is no such thing as "between friends" anymore! :(      )

That does look neat! I'll let it be for now but kudos for creativity!

Thank you. I should say, though, that the point of Splinter is to bring out OTHER'S creativity, but thanks for saying.

Is there such as thing as as "Splinter Pack" that people can create and share? Like a collection of the wallpapers and triggers and stuff?

I suppose my only dilemma is if/when I do go to Linux, which flavor should I go to.  But that will be a discussion on a Linux forum.  I can only imagine the fighting that will/has break/broken out between the Linux flavor fanboys.
I've used many many different OS's over the years including Unix, but I don't really have a clue about the differences in the Linux flavors.  Actually, I don't have a clue as to how to use Linux.  I suppose one good thing about that is if I don't like one front end, I can just blow it away and try another flavor without having to blow away the whole OS.  I actually have a Linux Distro, plus WinLinux 2001, but they are both old and outdated.
I had thought about going over to Apple too, but as much crap as I've seen that they've put their user base through, plus the cost of their machines & accessories and a few other things, I decided not to even add them to the list.
Methinks this will require much research.... For another couple of years I suppose.....

Maybe I can save you a couple of years... I can't say I know a whole lot, but see my adventures above on what a good solid weekend can do for you.

I liken it to a grid, Distro X Front End.

Each of those combos has software that is (directly) supported by those Distro X  Front End combos. For example, a Debian-Gnome combo will run different programs than a Debian-KDE combo. An OpenSUSE-KDE combo runs different programs than a Debian-SUSE combo.

So my rough advice is to think of the Software/Apps you want, (or potentially want in the future) and work backwards. I learned some 25% of "what I need to" in one weekend - I ended up with a Sub-Sub-Debian X LXDE combo. Later I can switch, but I feel it is important to start SOMEWHERE, then "just start doing things", THEN decide if it is still the best of all options, or if a switch is better.

(Exaggerated Copyright Rhetoric).

"If you wanted to try out our games, play the Demos we offer. That is our limited versions which we offer to establish if you like the basic concepts enough to buy the game. If we choose not to offer a demo, that is because we have made the business decision not to. You say that you like to download the entire version of a game to 'decide if you want to buy it'. However, that is a pure violation of copyright law. Downloading unauthorized copies of copyrighted material is illegal, and your subsequent purchase decisions are irrelevant. So therefore we are happy that you no longer download our copyrighted materials from the Pirate Bay, and removing you from the download stream justifies our actions. "

Imagine how much money I am going to be saving each year due to this!  ;D - Last year alone I spent around £2000 on software I had downloaded torrents of and decided the developers had done a good enough job to warrant my spending.

That is wonderful indeed. Is it per incident or per violator? Someone with too much time on their hands should post the count of swears in that video!  :D

Living Room / Re: Firefall developer: "Consoles, I believe, are dead"
« Last post by TaoPhoenix on May 03, 2012, 06:20 PM »

I'd like to separate the "console" from the "content". I get grumpy lately when news articles mash up two variables (or more!) to come to a conclusion. It's like saying that 6'1 out of shape Chicago Vegans can beat 4'11 Eskimos with perfect blood cholesterol in a foot race, based on a sample size of 6 each. (And they call this stuff "Science" now! What kind of science is that??!)

So let's talk about A, the "Console vs PC", and B, "AAA vs Indie/smaller games."

Back on Topic, in a way the act of deciding not to play a AAA game for "something smaller" is almost a type of consumer revolt. Overall cultural companies are trying to push us to "Moar Moar Moar" and to disdain last year's game so that they can increase sales. But it's just getting exhausting. "Pff - you mean this isn't in holographic 3d? who needs that?"

So Angry Birds and Farmville are my first examples of that revolt back to "flash in the pan" gaming. So is things like Ludum Dare.

Living Room / Re: Blog comments - On of off?
« Last post by TaoPhoenix on May 03, 2012, 06:55 AM »

Tough call.

I think it definitely depends on audience. Youtube comments are all over the map. "Explain xkcd"'s comments are really good.

Having successful comments feels like modern web. Maybe getting ticked off enough to feel you have to turn comments off might be "post-modern web", whatever that is.
3841
I'll have to check the settings - the latest evil fad is Flash Objects etc, which, not being cookies, don't always get wiped when you "clear cookies". I'll try to report later which sites need/don't need cookies etc.

3842
What happens if I set my browser to disallow all cookies period? I know I'll lose "a little functionality" but do y'all expect entire sites to break if they can't set cookies?
3843

I'm confused. I thought the point of discontinuing support meant that there would be no patches?

Geeze Tao, what did you think I was talking about? :o

Heh let's just say I'm as sharp as a marble, and cruise onward!  :D

Meanwhile, re: MS DRM, isn't there some kind of music/movie DRM in Vista and Windows 7? It was big news during Vista's first year, but I don't recall the details. Anyone know?

Finished Programs / Re: DONE: 1-action Unzip
« Last post by TaoPhoenix on May 01, 2012, 02:21 PM »
Close, but I dunno if this is a quirk on just my machine or not, when it extracts it seems like the folder isn't created, so when it puts the archive into the folder, it looks like it's gone! However, Right Click - Refresh makes it appear.

Any advice?

(In a related note, another app that modifies show/don't show file extensions needs a refresh too.)

Windows 7 ? There is a known issue with explorer refresh in Win 7 32/64bit. I have not yet seen a solution for myself, but there are some suggestions out there that some seem to have had sucess with

That was occurring for me on Windows XP though.
3848
Sure - that's pretty good progress! If you think your local stores are scalping and you think you can duck underneath them, sure, that's fair attempt at a model.

"All it takes" to avoid the "Cheap Chinese Crap" image is some smart advertising, maybe using words like "old time quality at old time prices", calling on the days when everything was made better or such.
3849
I'll leave that price comparison to my betters, and that becomes part of my answer.

An interesting question is "who is your audience". (Hoping this next part won't be insulting!) *Very* generally someone looking at "Low Budget" might be a less informed user who may not need intensive apps. But they'd want to know from someone they trust that they're not getting ripped off either. It somehow makes me want to suggest getting some independent reviews of your machines for quality.

I still think "Budget IT support" is going to be a key component. In a sense, if you do your job right "you'll never see that customer again" (because the machine will last forever and not fail an 8 cent dumb switch from a third rate batch by Dell). So then people want to try new things, but they don't have many places to turn except "their tech buddy" (who then begins to feel double duty).

So IT support for what initially feels like a low price is more of a loss leader to help customers/future customers know that the machine you build has support behind it and that you're not one more huckster. Trading example for example, I'd pay $5 for a detailed answer related to my Linux Adventure thread on exactly why the regular build of Ubuntu fails to boot on my machine but a tweaked sub-build worked. ("Probably a driver or something, but which one and why?")
