Living Room / Re: XP Password work around?

Just remember that if you've used NTFS encrypted files, iirc you lose access to those by resetting the password with one of the offline tools.

General Software Discussion / Re: Why Windows must go open source
« Last post by f0dder on March 06, 2009, 06:02 AM »
Windows isn't partly open source, and if you want POSIX you have Windows Services for Unix...

just when you thought it was safe to go back to Adobe Reader.. i wonder if Foxit is also affected by this bug. :-\
Why would you go back to adobe? :)

But no, Foxit shouldn't be affected by the bug - unless they've copied Adobe's document handler :) (but as the article says: if you have adobe reader installed on your system, it doesn't matter if you use another program to view PDF files.)
3804
Oh wonderful, exploits for metadata parsing in the document handler? Greeeeat code, adobe.

Good thing I haven't had Adobe Reader installed for a long time :)

General Software Discussion / Re: WINDOWS 7 THREAD (ongoing)
« Last post by f0dder on March 05, 2009, 09:09 AM »
The outcome of this for now is that all the usability improvements Microsoft made for UAC in Windows 7 were for nothing, and the only way to stay secure is to raise that lever in the configuration and go back to Vista's behaviour.
Let's hope they get this fixed. Win7 is after all still in Beta mode...

Btw, shouldn't the thermometer have gone *down* as the funding increases? Right now, it's more like "$6200 until Cody FEEEEVER!" :)

I read the Watchment comics yeeeeears ago when I was a young teenager, and quite liked them - perhaps it's worth picking up again and giving a read :)

Living Room / Re: How do you know if an lcd is dieing?
« Last post by f0dder on March 04, 2009, 11:04 AM »
My 17" Acer died some months ago, it would go black but the LED would still be green (ON mode, as opposed to orange STANDBY). Changing resolution or un+replugging the monitor would cause it to work for ~10 seconds, after which it would blank out again.

Any ideas what could be wrong? Ended up buying a new monitor, but if it's something that could be fixed cheaply, having a spare monitor would be nice :)

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Clearing up Windows temp files
« Last post by f0dder on March 03, 2009, 09:24 AM »
I haven't seen Windows behave like this for years - and I've often run XP (and before that, Win2k) for several days without rebooting. But I guess you might have a combination of low RAM and some buggy software running... my advice would be checking process memory consumption (using a proper tool like Process Explorer) and check whether you've got any software with very high "private bytes" or "WS private" usage.

FireFox is one of the applications that need to be restarted periodically, even FF3 with it's much improved memory allocation and cleanup.

Developer's Corner / Re: Need a custom CMS in PHP
« Last post by f0dder on March 03, 2009, 09:20 AM »
How much would a custom CMS cost? Oh boy :)

Unless you're going to use a random guy from India found through RentACoder and get a shoddy result, it's going to be "quite a wad of cash". Getting an existing CMS system customized to your needs would be cheaper, but don't expect "a few hundred dollars" unless you find somebody desperate.

General Software Discussion / Re: Help me back up a virus infected CD (!)

Dunno if CIH is the most brutal virus, but some versions did indeed erase your flash-bios - only works on Win9x afaik, though. And as for "erase your harddisk directly", it doesn't get more direct than what anybody with normal administrative privileges can do :)

It's easy enough to delete %TEMP%, but it's not going to fix any slowdown problems - those are caused by other issues, and shouldn't really be happening in NT versions of Windows (although sucky 3rd-party applications might have leaks or poor memory management, and thus could use a restart).

Disable the antivirus temporarily, copy the CD to harddrive, re-enable antivirus and scan the copied files, either deleting or quarantining the infected files - done :)

Gosh, I wonder which datatypes the Vista sidebar translator uses... I knew the inflation was pretty bad, but getting overflow? Woop.

For anyone who is interested in reading the actual GPL (as opposed to just being told what it says) the full text can be found here: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/

Except for one person, I have yet to meet anyone who has had a philosophical problem with the GPL after they've actually read it.
Make that two. I used to think the GPL was cool back when I was ~18, but I've grown older and wiser (or was that wizened?)

I'm not a big fan of that idea, czb... I'd hate to see DC covered in ads, and I don't like the focus on money.

But I've come to the conclusion that a site like ours shouldn't focus on giving big prizes.. we can let the big corporations drowning in money do that.. We'll keep things here much more friendly and less mercenary.. Those who want to participate will do so out of pride and enjoyment, and the pleasure of getting one of the rare and magical Cody mugs.
Hear ye, hear ye!

Nothing beats the feeling of getting a special limited-edition handmade cody statue :)
