Some things are better left unsaid... but as you've alluded to them, I had no idea that you, too, are into pugs. Wonderful little dogs.

General Software Discussion / Re: I found a jewel of a program: XMplay
« Last post by Darwin on December 01, 2007, 05:32 PM »
Cool, Nod5, I'll have to give these a try. I'm onto using a third mp3 player recommended by urlwolf: WinAmp 5.5 (xmplay was the first)... xmplay is still one of my favourites because it's so light and simple to use. I just wish it had better playlist and library organisation support. On that note, I suppose I should check the website for updates. It's been a long while...

General Software Discussion / Re: Maybe Vista doesn't suck?

It's funny - I often think about the advent of the audio cassette in the late '60s and the video tape in the mid to late 70's and wonder if there was this level of paranoia about piracy. I recorded songs off FM radio, entire albums off friends without a care in the world and didn't hear or read a peep about piracy when "I were a lad" in the 80's... Now you can't swing a dead chicken without worrying about DRM (well, CRM in that case...). I guess it's the perceived scale of the "problem" today?

Spectacular snow storm here - it's REALLY beautiful... We're getting used to snow again on mid-Vancouver Island after it being pretty much completely absent for years (though this is the second year in a row that November has ended with a MAJOR dumping of the stuff - exciting, cars in ditches, people without power, etc. etc.).

Good advice, nosh, thanks. I've haven't seen the second instance of explorer.exe since yesterday, but will follow up as you suggest if and when I do

Bingo! Another mystery solved - thanks  In this case the second instance of explorer.exe shutdown with Windows Explorer - I guess last time was just a glitch (or more likely I tried to use some feature of QTTabbar/AddressBar whatever and it hung in the background?).

Heh, heh - I have QT Address Bar and Tabbar installed as well. Oddly enough (OK, stupidly enough) I didn't actually fire up Windows Explorer when I tested all those 3rd party file managers (for obvious reasons). Right off to follow up on that...

Orange pekoe all the way for me (in the UK this is PGTips, Tetleys, and the like - I drink Tetleys in Canada - it's not labelled Orange Pekoe in the UK, but it's the same AFAICT). When I'm feeling decadent I have it North England style - blisteringly hot with a thimblefull of milk and more sugar than is healthy. More normally I drink it strong with a bit more milk and hold the sugar.

Coffee, coffee, coffee. When I can get my hands on it chocolate, too. I love tea as well but didn't vote for it because I don't tend to drink it as much as coffee.

tinjaw - +1 for cold pizza. I'm drooling just thinking about it (as much as a fossilized skull can drool, of course).

My all time favourite pissing contest "trumper" is from the "Crying Game" (yes, I did recoil at the key point in the movie because I HAD NO IDEA - I am assured that I am in a dim minority...).

Fergus: Have you ever tried to pick up your teeth with broken fingers?

Okay, okay so you can neither break someone's fingers nor knock out their teeth (very easily) with the laser, but c'mon - I've been waiting 15 years to use this line and I figure this is my one chance.

Ha, ha - just re-read Chris' OP and he set the "low-tech" precedent. It's all good...

I'm an idiot - I knew this was a joke going in and for some unfathomable reason entered my wife's real cell phone number! Oops. Heh, heh - never happened...

Wife: "Honey, why am I getting so many telemarketeers calling me on my cell phone?"
Husband (feigning innocence and a Spanish accent): " I know nothing, nothing"

Congratulations on the birth of your son and the project, Pierre! Yeah, I know, it's a bit late... I have a 3 1/2 year old and a 5 1/2 year old - LOADS of fun.

Anyway, sorry I'm not being very productive WRT beta testing. I AM installing the latest builds but I have not yet found the time to sit down with SQLNotes and put it through its paces. I'm beginning to feel a bit pathetic, but I will get there. BTW the GUI is coming along nicely (this is one aspect of the programme that I have been able to "track" since I first installed it)

You were right - it was PSTrayFactory driving up explorer.exe's RAM usage. I can live with it, particularly as I now know what is causing it. No idea what caused the duplicate explorer.exe to be running. I shutdown the one consuming lower resources (at the time it was using about 40MB RAM) and nothing happened - ie my desktop, tray and taskbar remained in place. I rebooted and tried running each of the 3rd party file managers that I have installed in turn and the duplicate explorer.exe didn't re-appear. A mystery... I wonder if explorer.exe crashed and two different apps tried to restart it simultaneously? Just a random thought.
