Living Room / Mobius Strip Chess Problem
« Last post by Renegade on January 09, 2013, 11:13 PM »
For those that like chess, mobius strips, and other twisted things:

Even if you don't try to solve the problem, just follow the path for a queen or rook - ignore anything in its path. Trippy~! :D

Living Room / Re: An interesting article on tablets
« Last post by Renegade on January 09, 2013, 10:54 PM »
The author seems to miss the point about what a tablet is for.

Huh? And what would that be?

IMHO, a tablet is for whatever you want to use it for, not for what someone has decreed it should be used for.

I could have been more explicit...

The author seems to pigeon-hole tablets into a very limited set of roles.

As a simple example, while I mostly read on my tablet, I have only to dock it into my keyboard and I have a laptop for word processing or spread sheets, or whatever. They have a very broad range of possible uses, though some uses are currently excluded (some for practical reasons), e.g. mobile application development, CPU/RAM intensive applications, etc.

The average tablet has a huge amount of computing power compared to anything we had 10 years ago. They're pretty darn good little machines.

Judge Rules Against Texas Teen Who Refused to Wear SmartID Badge
In a closely watched case, a federal judge today ruled against a high school sophomore who refused to wear a student ID embedded with a radio frequency chip that tracks students' movement on campus.

http://threatpost.co...smartid-badge-010813

I've been following that for a while. The judge is simply flat out wrong. It's disgraceful, but par for the course at this point.

You could probably find some by searching on "hp printer remote exploit".

Dude, seriously ... What makes you thing I don't already spend half my typical day doing that search already..?

 :D

Hahahah! Nope! I already figured that you knew that - it was a joke for you, and just banter for everyone else. :D

@Renegade - Any idea where this video originated/how one could find some of the research details for this project?

I think it's originally from a Dutch TV station. I'm not sure if they'd put out their research details as they're rather dangerous and open to abuse. You could probably find some by searching on "hp printer remote exploit". ;D

Had this investigation been conducted in the USA, a flurry of threats, lawsuits and possibly arrest warrants would have ensued - likely with the result this video would never have seen the light of day.

Thing there is, with IOmega (EMC), the European offices stonewalled them, but the US office actually responded. That was just one case in there though. A lot of companies stonewalled them. HP was much more forthcoming than some others.

But yeah, these kinds of things tend to get tanked fairly regularly.

Well, bringing in budgetary considerations... not sure if this is sobering, or just throwing gas on the fire:

http://demonocracy.info/

Lots of excellent graphics there to put money in perspective. However, one needs to wrap one's mind around money in terms of pallets of $100 bills and football stadiums full of pallets of money or towers of money that dwarf skyscrapers.

$2.6 billion is about 1% of the US debt annual interest payments (which is still far more than is spent on education). Or perhaps over 50,000 US jobs (which we might imagine is about 500,000 Chinese jobs).

How much is $2.6 billion? Well, if you went on a crazy spending spree shopping every day, and managed to spend $10,000 a day, it would take you over 700 years (260,000 days) to spend. Just how many big screen TVs do you need? ;D (But think about it - if you went to the mall, could you spend $10,000 a day - without hitting the jewelry store - in normal shopping?)

Would that have any kind of impact on this:

http://www.usdebtclock.org/

Well, that's just so hopeless that it wouldn't really matter much at all.

But this kind of sounds like helping a cocaine addict stop shooting by teaching them how to crack cocaine or introducing them to meth. Hey, it's cheaper.

Or perhaps it's more like trying to resolve bankruptcy problems by getting another credit card?

Here's a pretty visualisation of the US debt as a percentage of GDP:

http://visual.ly/uni...entage-gdp-1940-2012

(It's rather large, so I'll not post the image. And I'm lazy. :P )

Some more pretty charts:

http://www.usgovernm...art_1997_2017USb_G0f

As for simply spending as being good for jobs, well, not all spending is really equal:

https://duckduckgo.c...ood+for+economy+myth

I'm all for space exploration and research, but good grief... Wouldn't it actually be nice to be able to afford it?  :o

It talks about accessing printers & scanners remotely from the Internet. It gets pretty scary pretty quickly.

In the 70's every was sure we'd have flying cars by now.

I remember reading old Popular Mechanics magazines with flying cars, jet packs, and underwater cities. The future then looked a lot better than the future we're looking at now.

Then again, look at Popular Mechanics now, and you'll be saying that the Popular Mechanics then looked better than the Popular Mechanics now.

After a quick peek at their web site... well, yeah... Underwater cities and flying cars are just WWWAAAAYYYY cooler than DIY home theater systems and guides on cabling. ;D

You need to be explicit about where and how you need to use this. Expresso is an excellent program, and would certainly let you get the job done.

Jumped a bit too soon. They're only taking inquiries from manufacturers at the moment. Q4 this year...

I didn't read the original article as it sounded like some kind of marketing nonsense instead of the more literal interpretation.

This very much looks like a giant step in the right direction for computing - the next step would be to have "power terminals" instead of "thin clients" where the terminal itself adds computing power so that you can do stuff like fluid dynamics and other insanely intense applications.

I'm pretty excited about this now! :D Not looking forward to the wait though...

Good use?  Government?  Isn't that an oxymoron?  ;D

Y'know... I really, really wanted to come up with some kind of smartass joke to kind of carry on there, so I tried to think of something that the government does well in hopes of figuring out something funny. Well, that was an exercise in futility. So, bomb on that track.

However, I think this may very well just echo what you've got there and give a few people a laugh or two:

I'm not in the market for a new smartphone/device, but the next time I am, I'll be looking for a GNU GPL device.

Ubuntu for Android doesn't require a new smartphone/device if you already have an Android device. . .

The thought of wiping my device doesn't exactly thrill me. Setting up new computers/devices/installations is mind-numbing tedious and I'm absolutely certain that it's used as one of the more malicious tortures in Hell for the truly unrepentant evil ones.
