N.A.N.Y. 2014 / Re: NANY 2014 Release: Blasteroids
« Last post by Deozaan on January 01, 2014, 06:09 PM »
My score in the video is crazy high because of a ... feature ... that works better than I intended.

The points you earn for destroying each asteroid is based on the size of the asteroid, the current level, and how many lives you have. If you play perfectly (meaning you don't get killed) you'll have just over 7,000 points at the beginning of level 7. But here's where the part where the feature works too well comes in: You're awarded an extra life every 10,000 points. So once you get to about level 10, if you manage to have 5 lives or so, suddenly you're getting 10,000 points every several seconds, granting your more lives, which gives you a larger score, which in return gets you more lives, which gets you an even larger score, etc., and before you know it you've got more lives than you could ever lose unintentionally.

In the video, I actually had close to 30 lives and intentionally just sat there to lose them all before starting that last level. I was just gaining them too fast by that point. On level 15 with 30 lives, each small asteroid would give me 1,800 points. That's an extra life every 6 small asteroids. And there was no lack of small asteroids at that point.

So yeah, I threw in that extra life feature at the last minute and didn't properly test it out. Or I just didn't play as well in my tests and I died too quickly. Either way, that needs to change.

Even though it says that teenagers aren't really concerned with privacy... I think that's a fallacy.  Depending on how you ask it- no, they don't care.  But why then are things like snapchat all the rage (if you don't know what it is, you send someone an image, and they have 10 seconds(?) to look at it before it's deleted).

They might not be concerned with the NSA... but they're definitely concerned with parents and leaving evidence...

Somewhat off topic, but:

Thank you very much, mouser!

DC is a great place to be. I don't think I've ever stuck around any other website/forum as I have with DC. Thanks for fostering such a great environment where so many other great people can exchange thoughts and ideas and entertainment, etc.

Happy new year to all you wonderful folks. (c:

A lot of times you can just select some text and ctrl-c copy it and it will save the formatting details to the clipboard when you copy. Or in other words, instead of just copying the plaintext, it will also save the link and even font information.

This happens for me in Gmail, which can actually be annoying, because if I copy some text from another webpage and paste it into an e-mail, then it can even change font and/or font size sometimes.

I've just updated the original post with the final NANY release.

I couldn't attach the files to the forum because they are too large, so they are hosted on the game's itch.io page.

None of my entries have ever gotten much (if any) attention past the first month after release. I attribute that mostly to my entries not being of very high quality, and to me not being very responsive to feedback I've gotten.

But I enjoy it each year for the challenge and for the mugs!

N.A.N.Y. 2014 / Re: NANY 2014 Release: Q-FlashCards for Android
« Last post by Deozaan on December 30, 2013, 04:19 PM »
The cloud backup is provided by Android and works automagically, I don't even know the details, I just use the API. And I verified that after installing the app on another phone, the data just gets there. However the app definitely shouldn't be used on two of your devices at the same time, I think the backup would get all messed up. So this is useful in case of accidental uninstallation of the app, or moving to a new phone.

I'm assuming this is provided by Google and requires you to be signed into a Google account on your device. That will probably work for 99% of Android users, but I think there are some people who don't like to use any of the Google services (perhaps ewemoa is one such person?). Also, Now that I think about it, I wonder if that makes a difference for people who use Amazon Kindle devices.

I recommend you update the original post--as well as the thread title--to say whether or not this is a finished NANY entry or if it's been withdrawn.

If it's a finished submission, then more details in the original post would be great. There's a nice template you can use to standardize it and give you an idea of the kind of info to include.

It's a nice app. It's working fine on my Galaxy Nexus (takju/maguro). My only complaint so far is that I have the notification sound set to make a noise for "overdue questions" but it seems to make a noise after only about maybe a minute. How long until a question is considered overdue? I would expect overdue to mean something like 30 minutes at least. And related to that, when is a question considered "long overdue"? And can these options be customizable?

[EDIT] Another complaint: I got one card wrong once after getting it right several times in a row and now I have to build back up from zero (the shortest delay between asking again)? That doesn't seem right. [/EDIT]

Another question: How does cloud backup work? I thought I'd need to enter some login credentials for Dropbox or something similar, but it just says it backed up successfully. To where? And how to I restore from my backup if I wipe my phone or install the app on another device?

I would also recommend that you put the app on the Google Play Store. No need for a separate website. The store listing itself can be its website. If you've never put an app on the Google Play Store before, it will ask you for your website. In my case, I just linked back to my developer profile on the Play Store itself and it worked fine.

There is one feature-request though: I want to be able to stop all notifications. I've tried turning off everything I could find, but it still pops up in the notification area. I dislike most stuff that puts itself there, unless I explicitly allow it. Currently I'm unable to achieve that

Depending on what version of Android you have, you can turn off all notifications for an app in the "App info" window. Just uncheck that "Show notifications" box and you're set! See my screenshot below for more an example:

Thank you. :)

I've been making some other improvements, but will likely hold out on making any updated public builds until the final release. But a few of the more notable improvements are:

  • Asteroids now appear to wrap around the world more smoothly, rather than suddenly teleporting to the other side.
  • Fixed a significant performance problem that greatly affected the frame rate on lower end devices when spawning asteroids.

You could also implement your own "honor system" rules. For example, you could say you're going to play a "hardcore" mode where if you die, you will delete your character.

Or if you die, you will drop all your money and all of your items in your inventory.

Etc. There are lots of ways you can make the game more challenging on yourself without needing to actually mod the code.

This is one that I've seen passed around via e-mail years ago, but just thought of it today and so I went seeking it out to remember it.

I found it here: http://www.e-jokes.net/christmas/003.htm

The Angel On The Tree

One particular Christmas season a long time ago, Santa was getting ready for his annual trip ... but there were problems everywhere.

Four of his elves got sick, and the trainee elves did not produce the toys as fast as the regular ones so Santa was beginning to feel the pressure of being behind schedule. Then Mrs. Claus told Santa that her mom was coming to visit. This stressed Santa even more. When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth and two had jumped the fence and were out, heaven knows where. More stress. Then when he began to load the sleigh one of the boards cracked and the toy bag fell to the ground and scattered the toys. Needless to say Santa wasn't in the best mood.

Just then the doorbell rang and Santa went to the door expecting another problem.  He opened the door and there was a little angel with a great big Christmas tree there just to cheer Santa up.

The angel said, very cheerfully, "Merry Christmas Santa. Isn't it just a lovely day? I have a beautiful tree for you. Isn't it just a lovely tree?  Where would you like me to stick it?"

Thus began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas tree.

I've purchased books and music from the Google Play Store that includes DRM-free downloads of MP3s or PDF/epubs, etc. Not of all them (the books) include the free epub option, but it gives me greater confidence that I'm actually buying (read: attaining some semblance of ownership of) something when they do.

By the way, what's your source for that story and quote, 40hz?

It *keeps* putting shortcuts onto my desktop.

But NO other program I have ever seen, out of 100+ I have played with, does this. THAT'S Bad News.

I guess you've never used Adobe (PDF) Reader. I can't tell you how many times I've had to remove the shortcut to that from the desktop after one of its myriad updates.
