Some of these companies are going overboard with their application version names.  Pro, Pro Standard, Pro Extended, ultimate, Home, Standard...it's ridiculous.  I feel it's like advertising...they want to confuse you on purpose.

Well, ok.  It's a legit program, you don't have to worry about that. i'll see how their printing options are...

Well, I guess 2 years ago it looked like the standalone version of Evernote was going away. It is still alive and kicking as far as I can tell, in fact there was an update this month.
Really!  I had no idea.  I have to give it a try.  Awesome, thanks.

thanks, z.

rjbull, way to resurrect an old thread!  Notefrog looks impressive.  I am very interested in it and I'm going to give it a shot. Even though I use infoqube and onenote, there's always room for another light, quick notetaker.  Actually, now that evernote standalone is gone, this may have to be my replacement.  Nice find!

Jim, there's also a little known program called Addza:
http://www.addza.com/

There's a lot of things I like about it, but I think I've stuck to Handy because of the dialing.  however, you mentioned the UI, so maybe you will like Addza.  Addza has a very pretty UI with some unique looking things going on.  It claims to have flexible printing options as well.  Check it out.

Addza's search is the best of all of them.  It's like evernote: search as you type, it highlights the matches as you type, and it filters the list down to the matches as you type.  It's great.  My favorite part of the program.  i even mentioned it in the blog thing I wrote here once:

Ah!  Jim, I understand what you are looking for.  I'll see if Handy can do that tonight, I don't see why not...and easily at that.

I once looked into the online capabilities of Handy and also A-book.  But this was before I had a website and before cloud computing became so big.  Now, I can just put a report on my website and find all my contacts from there.  i don't need to be adding and editing contacts when I'm on the run anyway.

Also, as for dialing, I'm your expert there.  I looked heavily into that.  Handy won that battle, hands-down.  I'll tell you why.  For dialing, I wanted it to be as quick and easy as possible.  All the applications I tried had too much clicking and windows popping that I had to later close, it was all very cumbersome and annoying.  What was great about Handy is that you dial, and the little window will pop up while dials.  but then you can set it to automatically close after a few seconds, which is GREAT.  That means, you just click once to dial, and that's it.  No extra windows left over afterwards, and no multiple clicking while dialing.  it was the only one that did this.

Thanks steel.  These are issues I'm already running into.  We have asked people to look at certain processes that they are experts and give us comments about how it is documented.  The comments I received were all spellchecking, grammer, etc. type of comments.  i was like, no, I'm not asking you to proof read these documents.  I need you to tell me if this is the way things are done, and if not, what is the current procedure.  So, yes, i realized yesterday that this is going to involve a lot of collaboration and discussion.

This is interesting.  I'm not really in a position to offer advice on improving business processes.  But you never know what may come up in the future.  What is the proper way to learn about business processes and what to do to improve them?  This sounds like MBA stuff to me.  Maybe it's time I get one.

SB, you say that you are using Handy Address Book? How are the printing options? They don’t mention much on their web site about printing. Start-Trak shows a heck of a lot of printing options and the overall features look to be as good as if not more extensive than Handy. mwfuss, you say you did use it; any reason you are no longer using it?
I'm not sure.  I've never printed with it before.  I can try later (when i get home) and post back.  The website says this:
Printing
Print your addresses in a list or table format.  Print them in a detailed report format, or in a booklet format.  Create a compact, folded, double sided wallet or purse phone book.  You can also print mailing addresses out on envelopes and labels.  Printing is very customizable, so you can make your printouts appear just as you want.

I've asked about this before.  It was hard finding something good.  The FileTypesMan is something new to me, and it looks pretty good.  I can't try it because it's blocked here at work, but I'll give it a try later.

The one I settled with a while back (after a long, hard search) is called Types:
http://types.sourceforge.net/
i don't know if it works with Windows 7.  The website doesn't say it does, but you never know.

Ah!  one of my favorite subjects.  I actually joined this forum initially because I was looking for addressbook software.  Unfortunately, addressbook software are considered outdated today because everyone just uses whatever is on their email program, and more accurately, whatever they use for their cell phones.  Most people are fine with just having their contacts on their phones.

here are the threads that talk about this.  Even though these are old threads, the software mentioned hasn't changed.  My favorite that I still use is Handy Addressbook.  It's the best of the bunch.

Addressbook Shootout

Despite what those threads say, I am currently using Handy Addressbook as my contacts manager.

Thanks SB. I did look at those and am checking out some of those apps, but since the threads are two years old I thought I would get some up-to-date info.

Thanks again!

Jim
That's what I'm saying.  i kind of keep my eye out for this kind of software.  There's nothing new that has come out in the last 5 years.  Nobody really cares about this software.  Try out Handy Addressbook.  If it's not good enough, let me know what is missing, and I'll see if there's anything else that I know about.

The other one to try is Infoqube.  it could be set up to probably do everything you are looking for.  but you will need to learn how it works.

I had a situation last year where my mom's computer had some bad malware/virus on it.  i used my usb to try to fix it using portable apps because none of the installed apps were working.  But I got the virus on the usb stick.  Then I took it to work, and almost f'ed up the computer there.  Mcafee wasn't able to handle it (which is ridiculous, seriously...the big name AV companies are no good...Norton, Mcafee).  i was able to clean it, but I was worried because I've gotten in stupid trouble before at that job for messing with my computer.

By the way, i can do a spectacular imitation of this that floors people.

Sounds like you have the makings of a 10 Million+ hit viral video.

Get the 15 minutes of fame that's your birthright - upload that baby!
i don't know if it's as funny if you don't know the guy.  I'd have to prepare a skit that introduces the character so that people understand his weirdness...then I can do the impressions.  My friend does an even better impression of him at meetings.  This guy is such a character!

Why not books?  What is the standard for publishing books?  I'm not talking about just text books.  I'm talking about books with lots of graphics everywhere.

I'm definitely going to learn Indesign soon.  not for work, but for personal stuff.  I am anticipating doing several projects that involve either books, articles, or pamphlets.  And i want tight control on how everything is presented graphically.  So I'm going to use Indesign for that.

That's when things are in proportion.  Some people don't have the physique to wear such things.  I know I don't and wouldn't.
Ha!  For sure!  One is distracting in a good way, the other is still distracting...but not in the same way!
Funny story: a couple of years ago at the gym, this guy was wearing a muscle tee shirt.  it was bright orange.  he's a funny looking dude...funny face, big ol round pot belly, and just sort of goofy in general.  So he decided to jump rope.  oh man!  Funniest thing ever.  What's funnier is that he couldn't do more than two jumps without getting all tangled up.  but he kept trying and trying.  It was hard keeping a straight face.  By the way, i can do a spectacular imitation of this that floors people.

We only have 2 teenagers in our church, graduated 2 in May so I cannot count on them.  But your right about teenagers figuring stuff out way faster than most adults.

I belive mediashout was around $500 which is quite a bit for us.

I went with PowerWorship because I thought some of the less geeky people JUST might be able to figure it out easier than one of the other ones.  But it does work for us and that is fine with me.
That's good.  You know what would be cool?  An iphone app to control this.  you can do it right from the pew!

Wow, I am really enjoying using styles in Word.  This is good stuff.  This is the way to do it.  The efficiency is very tangible.  A lot of the setup is a pain in the ass and can definitely be improved as far as UI goes.  But the functionality is right on.

I have looked at MediaShout and actually d/l'd the demo.  It's not real user friendly and for a small church like ours, with only a few people that actually know something about computers it was too dificult.

your right that is a real meal deal but... for our case it wasn't the best deal in town.   ;D
At my sister's church, they had a similar problem (but it's not a small church).  The AV guy knows nothing about computers.  I told them all you need to do is find the geeky computer teenager in the church, and he will do an amazing job with all that stuff.  i've seen these kids do much better work for free than the adults who are hired.

hi! yes i'm in the usa.

we have two nights a week where our gym area is gender specified. it was voted on and passed by something like 90% of the women and better than 70% of the men. from this i would surmise that the majority of our members wanted one night a week where there wasn't the distraction of having the opposite sex around even though the club composition is three quarters single.

weird huh?

now how about someone passing me a club burka so I can go exercise. :P

the rest of the club is open for everybody seven days a week.
Wow, that's really interesting.  It makes sense though.  Guys are always hitting on girls at the gym.  It's probably quite distracting on both ends.  I used to go to a fancy gym, and I'd always be thinking about the girls around me, what clever thing am I going to say to her, maybe I'll ask her out, etc.

Loved it. It's nice to see cartoons with texture in them, and not just flat color.

I really wish that the theatres would get back to using their brains (I know... unrealistic...) and actually bringing some better value back to theatre-goers by putting shorts back in. It would make the 15~30 minutes of commercials bearable.

(Pet peeve of mine -- I LOATHE paying almost $20 for a movie only to have them waste my time with an excessive amount of advertising -- if you want me to watch ads, give it to me for free... Otherwise, f*** **f! A few minutes are ok to allow for stragglers, but 15+ minutes???)

It's always really nice to have shorts before a movie. It really makes the whole "going to the movies" experience much better. You get the movie, plus a cool little surprise!
I feel you there.  It's unbelievable how much advertising has crept into our lives.

Needless to say, I used to think Sharon Stone was HELLA HOT in that movie...working out in her leotard.  Man, i thought that was the hottest thing I had seen at the time.

what is it about leotards that they have that effect on most guys? i can understand how it would if someone like sharon stone were wearing one. especially if it's one of those suspenders & tubetop combos like she's got on! but i've seen guys go almost as nuts when the body wearing the leotard wasn't exactly up for the challenge.

i only ask because it's reached the point  where they've considered asking the members to refrain from wearing them on 'mixed' gym nights at the athletic club i belong to.
 :)
Leotards are like bikinis--it's basically underwear that's been socially accepted to be worn in public.  You are basically able to see everything.  So that makes it sexy.  It also tends to enhance most body shapes by having the stretchy fabric everywhere.  It makes everything look all tight and smooth.

it's the same thing with those tight muscle shirts the guys wear.  it makes things look better by being all tight, shiny, and smooth.

besides, I have a thing for sporty girls sometimes.  The whole ponytail, running shorts, tank top look.  Whoo whee!

What kind of club doesn't allow the boys and girls to normally mix?  I've never seen anything like that.  Are you in the USA?

If you really want to do this correctly look at MediaShout (which isn't free). It handles all the screen work for a worship service. One nice thing is you can make changes while you are running a service - something PowerPoint has no clue on. You can create a large song library that is totally editable and if you know someone with MS you could get their music library. Just a suggestion.
I second getting a full featured software like this.  I've seen these things in action, and they are tremendously useful.
