Site/Forum Features / Re: RSS Feeds for DonationCoder.com and this Forum
« Last post by app103 on September 14, 2008, 11:28 AM »
I have a dynamic blogroll that relies on RSS...

Every time a new thread is started on DC, it rises to top of the list, with a link to the thread, as a well as one to the main page of the forum. (I also have the DC blog added, too)

5 most recently updated blogs & forums are shown, along with a link to expand & show all. A very nice widget that Google recently added for use only on Blogspot blogs.

(I wouldn't click to show all on my blog, though...unless you have a lot of time to kill)

You are already encouraging people to visit you (and keep coming back) by giving stuff away. Maybe you should be doing more to encourage the people that keep coming back for free stuff, to buy the other stuff you have.

Good to hear that individual icons are available for purchase. $129 for a full set in which I only want a single icon is too expensive for me.

Maybe you should post this info on your site, somewhere. I bet you'd make a lot more sales from people that feel the same way I do.

Why not just give everyone the icons every week and let them download them without silly stuff?

This points and swapping thing is really a pain. I don't see any reason why when I log in that I should have disabled icon downloads until I play some swapping/point gathering game.

You either want me to have the icons or you don't. And if you do, then don't make me play silly pointless games.

Maybe a newsletter announcing the latest sets to download, and if you want general discussions, introduce them in the newsletter and encourage participation. Maybe set up some sort of forum where people can provide helpful info on working with the vectors and other art related stuff. Maybe some web design stuff too.

But the swapping game and collecting points isn't fun. It already takes a long time to download the icons, since you only allow one download at a time and you can't use a download manager to schedule and automate it. I am on slow dialup right now, and if I get disconnected, I have to start all over again. That's not fun either. Why make it take even longer with stupid games?

The only reason why I have put up with the stupid stuff for so long is because you really do have good quality artwork.

In other words...I really love your product, but I hate your site.

Oh, and if you want to encourage more people to buy the icons you have for sale, maybe you could sell individual icons too. Some people don't want an expensive full set and being able to buy just the ones we want or need would be awesome. (you could even feature a few in the newsletters) There are a few I certainly would buy if they were offered individually, but as a huge set I can't afford them.

You are NOT stuck with the default theme of any page on the web. You can change it all to suit your tastes and needs.

You are able to define your own style sheet to be applied to all or some pages you visit, in most modern browsers.

Those that love black backgrounds, can have Google and Wikipedia (and even DC) that way, if they want.

Originally intended as an accessibility feature, user defined style sheets are very powerful.

If that's the student demographic they're going after, why get so fancy?

If I were running that school, I'd just keep the old curriculum and offer free beer.

Bet I'd get twice as many enrollments too!  ;D
:beerchug:

In the US, you wouldn't be able to legally offer that free beer till their 3rd or 4th year, in most cases. (legal drinking age is 21)

I have heard of colleges here that will give you credits for watching & discussing episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

And there is a college in the Washington DC area that has a course on "Alchemy for Wizards". ;D

Montclair State University in NJ used to have a course on "fortune telling" where you learned the ins & outs, and how-to of Tarot cards, palm reading, tea leaves, runes, and the like. (my hubby's ex-wife used to teach it)

I have been a member for awhile. (I have at least 10 gigs of their icons on my other computer.)

Yes, it is true that it is a time consuming pain in the butt to trade icons to get the sets you want, rather than them just releasing all the sets to everyone that is a member.

There is nothing social about it...just a lot of begging & hunting for people to trade with.

But their icons are great. The art work is absolutely beautiful! And they give away vectors for them too, so there is no limit to you can do with them.

In the name of clutter reduction, I vote for moving some of the icons underneath our avatars to the profile page, and keeping them there. (starting to get crowded and unsightly)

Good thing I don't suddenly need any of those Asian language IME's that I rejected in the past.

You should probably consider getting into the Empower Program or getting a Microsoft Action Pack Subscription. Most likely MAPS is better for you as you'd have to release software for download in the Empower Program.

It's like $400~500 or whatever, but you get more licenses than you'll ever likely need. It simply rocks.

Huh? Not sure what any of that has to do with old Windows Update patches that I should still be able to obtain if I wanted them....for free.

The way I feel about it, if you run PSP the first time and it doesn't say "Jasc" on the splash screen...then close it, don't run it again, and uninstall it instead.

So the patch for this was released by Microsoft and is available now? Or is it still pending?

Is it just for XP users or all IE6 users?

I have a hard time believing all IE6 users are going to have an opportunity to get this patch.

I seriously doubt Microsoft is going to back on their "promise" and release patches for anyone running IE6 on 98/ME/2k (well, maybe 2k, but I wouldn't hold my breath or expect it to be free, since they wanted to charge a lot of money for the DST patch for 2k)

Just for the heck of it (not that I really expected there to be a patch waiting for me when I got there), I opened IE6 and went to Windows Update and discovered they really did a number on it and completely disabled access to any older patches for WinME, by requiring one to be logged in with an administrator account to use Windows Update...when they know damn well, better than anyone else, that there is no such thing as administrator accounts in WinME.  >:(

Good thing I don't suddenly need any of those Asian language IME's that I rejected in the past.

That was why I skipped all those older ones and started with the one about the links page...since that DOES need attention....and it's still a great page that is worth looking at that maybe a lot of people haven't bothered to visit before. (either I never went there before today, or the page changed a lot since I joined and I never noticed)

Armando is absolutely correct...but how do you go about submitting corrections? And the original also contains a typo..."yawn" should have been "yarn".

Now if you combined the real definition of "mouser" with the urban dictionary one for "mousered" (without the typo) it makes more sense. (as well as mouser's forum avatar)

n.

An animal, especially a cat, that catches mice.

As this forum's most prolific poster, it's only natural that mouser will have the most threads in need of reply love.

But yeah, I'll spread some...starting from oldest and working my way forward. I figure the oldest threads have been deprived the most, and not likely to get any attention from the masses, so they deserve the reply love, more.

App, I still cannot see why Bike Mike's site is your favorite.
I can relate to what he's doing, but not to the point of seeing it as one of the most beautiful sites on the web. Maybe one needs to understand multiple sclerosis to see why this is a feat?

I guess you didn't read it all.

Mike was a victim of birth defects. Born blind in one eye, barely can see out of the other...deaf in one ear, wears a hearing aid in the other...facial deformities...mental retardation (mentally, I'd say he was no older than about 12, even though he is physically 38)

Has competed in Special Olympics, was an official Olympic Torch Bearer (regular Olympics 2002), was selected as an alternate torch bearer in 2004.

Everyone that has ever met him loves him. Restaurants have named sandwiches and dinners after him.

He dreams of some day being a DJ at a real radio station. He certainly knows his way around a control room of both TV & radio. (info not on the website: If he had been able to go to college, he would have majored in Mass Communications. He wanted to go, already had credits from high school towards his degree, basically ran our town's cable station, but no college wanted him.)

No matter what, he keeps chasing his dreams, always keeps a cheerful attitude, and setbacks mean nothing to him (and he sure has had his share over the years).

He's the poster child for ambition, persistence, optimism, enthusiasm, and determination....as well as kindness & generosity.

Coffee Cup thought enough of his original site to give him a copy of every application they made, for free, and tossed in a few T-shirts too.

If all you saw was some guy that rides a bike to raise money for multiple sclerosis, you really missed a lot.

He is one of the most beautiful people I have ever known....and that beauty is all over that website.

Living Room / Re: Are you reading the blogs on our Link page?
« Last post by app103 on September 08, 2008, 07:34 AM »
I never really took a look at that page before. Lot of great stuff there...and some things I didn't know about. I ended up adding a few new things to my feed reader, even though I promised myself I wouldn't till I got the whole "information overload" thing under control.

But I have to wonder when was the last time that page was updated?

The "Site of the Month" that is listed there at the top is for December 2007.

And you are still linking to sysinternals.com when you should by now be linking to http://technet.micro.../en-us/sysinternals/

With how international our members are, Pandora might not be as great of a site suggestion as it was when it was originally added to the list. (it's US only) And now there are other sites similar that maybe it could be replaced with, like perhaps Last.fm?

Maybe it's time to go through the page and see what needs to be added, changed, updated, or removed.  ;)

I vote for either adding a new section with the best web comics, or at least adding xkcd and Ctrl+Alt+Del to the existing Online Entertainment and Humor section.

[Ehtyar]: The biggest WebKit based problem is its inability to render non-standards-compliant pages well.

But why go to that trouble? Web authoring software, including the pretty fantastic MS Expression Web, creates compliant W3C code. If you (not you personally) can't be bothered to compose a standards-compliant webpage/site, then Google shouldn't have to engineer around your mistakes.

Because kids build web pages (or parts of pages) too, and often with hand written code that isn't standards compliant.

Not to mention a ton of blogs customized by beginners.

And a browser should be able to handle one of the most beautiful sites I have ever visited. (read it all and you will understand why I say that)

With 63 Errors and 168 warnings on just the main page, it's a billion times better than it used to be, back when he hand coded it all himself.

Any browser that can't handle that site belongs in the trash.
