Site/Forum Features / Re: Should we add tags to forum?
« Last post by superboyac on June 26, 2010, 10:36 PM »
All i will say is this:
I have never had a problem finding what I was looking for in this forum.  Never.  In other forums, i continually refer them to here as an example of how the best way to do a forum is.

So tags or no tags, i am 100% sure that mouser will do it in the best way possible, because that is his track record.  I'll bet that if mouser implements tags here, I'll be telling people, "See, this is the way you should do tags."

Thank you, steveorg, you definitely understand the situation I'm in.  I agree with IainB that there may be a BEST way of doing something, and I am all for it, but at this point, I have no idea how far down that road I can go.

What steveorg described above is pretty accurate as far as my situation.  I'll clarify a couple of things:  in my opinion, we are not under-resourced.  But that's my opinion, .  i don't think anyone else will admit that.  Also, money is not an issue.  if we're talking about $3k software, I'm pretty sure that's no problem.  What will be a problem is convincing people that we need it.  Again, steveorg nailed it.  Politics is huge right now.  I can't give details, but it's a huge deal.  it's actually a big lesson I am learning right now.  I am not naturally a political creature, but it's also something I can't avoid.  I will have to handle it and handle it well or else my own career will be at stake.  I don't have the option of ignoring it and retreating to my cubicle until I retire.  I love the situation I'm in, and I love these challenges.  I like the people I work with and the place that I work.  A lot.  But that doesn't mean things are perfect, far from it.  i want to help, and I believe I'm in a position to help, so that is my goal.

Anyway, despite the tone of IainB's conversation, to me he really seems to be on to something.  That is why i'm spending all weekend studying it.  Normally, i would never do this after that kind of treatment, but there's something good in there, I can see it.

By the way, can anyone point me to the right places for BPM societies and things like that?  Are there local organizations i can join or just hang around a little?  I'm in Los Angeles, so there must be something around here.  Please let me know.  Thank you.

While superboyac and daddydave make excellent points the question in my mind is while the benefit of adding tags may at times be minimal what is the downide to adding them? I can't seem to think of any.

Minimal gains in searching are still gains.
true.  i don't think adding them hurts one way or the other.

My opinion is the search function here is so good (best I've ever seen) that tags won't add that much more to it.  I've never been a big fan of tags anyway.  They are useful in theory, but it depends so much on the users.  You can't enforce any systematic rules on users, so it can quickly just end up doing nothing of any importance.  For example, let's say someone is looking for topics about Excel, and there are 10 posts about excel, but 2 of them didn't bother tagging "excel", but that's the one you are looking for.

Anyway, those are my thoughts.  Nothing tops the DC search function.

@IainB:
Firstly, I believe you know what you are talking about.  I apologize fore not closely reading and thinking about your very long posts.  I simply didn't have the time for it.  This weekend, I am rereading them and will have to spend time thinking about it.

Secondly, i feel you were rude in the post above.  I understand why you did that, and it may even have been effective in getting me to reconsider my methods, but it was rude.

Thirdly, while you are throwing out a lot of information, you are not communicating effectively.  What is your point and can you state it clearly in one paragraph?  There is an art to being able to say a lot with less words.

Anyway, I'm not mad at you because the information you have posted seems to really be on to something.  Now before we continue, I have to tell you a little bit about myself and where I work.  I can't give details because of the nature of my work, but I'll do my best:

--I am not in control of what I SHOULD and SHOULDN't be doing.  I'm not in that position.  I can only do what I am asked.  Now, I am in a special situation where I am being asked to do something that managers higher up and more experienced should be doing.  But again, there's a lot going on here that you don't know about.

--My organization is in a highly politically charged and public climate.  There's so much going on.  A lot of people probably do not want the business processes depicted very accurately because accountability will be at stake.  And once the media and the public get wind of it, there may possibly be a lot of very serious consequences.

So I may have to do things a certain way even though it's not the best way and I know it.

I am personally curious and willing to do things the best way.  That's why i want to know more about what you are saying.  however, that doesn't mean I'll get to do it for the organization.  If I even suggest going down that road, I may be pulled of this task.  So I have to be very delicate in handling this.

So please relax.  because of you, I am devoting a whole weekend to digesting all the things you have said in this thread.  I will come back at you with more questions, and I hope you will answer them.  If not, please say so because i don't want to start something with nowhere to turn to for advice.

General Software Discussion / Re: Software for Business Process Modeling?
« Last post by superboyac on June 25, 2010, 09:50 AM »
I recently PM'd a couple of the experts here (I forgot to include IianB!) about another question I had.  Now that I'm doing these flowcharts for business processes, I was thinking about how I should write the text that goes along with it.  here was my question:
I'm working on creating business process flowcharts, and I feel the work has been productive so far.  My question is, how do I convert the flowchart into text?  Eventually, all of this will be in a printed manual.  For each process, there will be a flowchart shown, and then each step of the process will be described in the text.

I am having a hard time figuring out how to write the text.  I can't really write it in outline format because often there are several processes happening in parallel, so i don't know how to accurately convert that to text.

Another idea I had was to give each item of the flowchart an index number or something, and use those numbers in the text and just write comments for each of them.

But what I really want to know is if there are some standard ways of doing this in the industry.  What is the "normal" way of doing this?  Please let me know, thanks so much.

So far, I've received a nice response from Steveorg, but I'd love more input also.  Please advise, thank you.  below is Steveorg's response:
I doubt if there is any single "normal" way of doing this, however if there is, IainB is likely to know since he has the academic background. Not even within the limited sphere of Sarbanes-Oxley was there any single standard. I do have an opinion on best practices, which a Fortune 50 converted to world-wide at great expense. You seem to be creating detailed desktop documentation, which requires extra details not accommodated by the templates, but most of the underlying concepts are the same.

Your instinct to fill-in the details in the text is good. I've had the questionable pleasure of fixing documentation where too many details were added as comments to the flowcharts. The clutter rendered the flowcharts useless. Unless computer controlled, systems like index numbering are hard to maintain and are error prone.

Try a three column approach. Col 1: Step Owner (same as swim lane), Col 2: Text from the flowchart, Col 3: Extra details. Alternately, since your extra details (such as marked-up screen shots, which is essential when documenting software processes for end-users) could be quite extensive, put Col 3 on the next row and use a bolder border to group the three boxes together.

At the beginning create sections for Process Objective, Process Overview, Roles and Responsibilities (titles in swim lanes with an overview of the functions in the process), Definitions & Abbreviations (you can use this to assemble a company glossary, and once assembled unify duplicate terms, and then cascade the surviving term back down to the documentation) and Preceding Processes (Most often processes could be considered continuations of a prior process, so this helps for context).

In any case, if you'd like templates and examples, let me know. I'll have to clean the company's identity from the documents so it will be a couple of days before I'll be able to do it.

mmm...I actually use more than one application for my GF tasks:

GF Suite Pro Ultimate CS3:  it's expensive, but worth it!  highly customizeable, more features than I can handle, kind of unwieldy at times, good support, steep learning curve

GFree: freeware, hasn't been updated in a long time, active forum, lots of third party addons, portable, lightweight, simple and intuitive interface, just the right amount of options, i use it when I don't want to think too much and keep it simple

GF Plus 2010: relatively inexpensive, completely bloated, looks great but does nothing exceptionally well...i actually use a cracked version so I make sure to scan it with my AV before using

GFweb v2.1:  This is an online cloud application.  It's slow.  you have to register with all your info just to try it out.  Looks good, but not customizeable at all.  Hardly has any features.  I have to keep all my data online, which worries me...what happens when it stops being developed?  I hate it for the most part, but it gives me the opportunity to use it wherever I am...on the road, at work (frowned upon), on other people's computers, sometimes I'll use it when I'm bored at my relatives' homes.

40hz, you bring up good points that never crossed my mind before.  Much food for thought!
3759
wow, that really is an awesome site.  i already found a very cool Outlook plugin.
3760
for what it's worth i wasn't trying to be funny -- not sure why they changed the name.
whoops!  i thought they changed from "freeware" to "primewares".  But upon closer inspection, I guess it was "freeware world team".  Yeah, that's not funny at all.  This is the problem with text communication.

SuperboyAC is right.

Problem is, now that corporations dominate large parts of the internet landscape, they see everything in terms of MAKING MONEY, not of sharing. They spend billions lobbying governments around the world for extremely restrictive legislation like DMCA, ACTA, ridiculously extended copyright lifetimes, and so on. If you're not PAYING to watch their "content," then you're stealing it (according to them).

Let your government know someway somehow that you want an open web, open content, open standards, open data, open source,.... and keep letting them know.
I wish.  But there aren't enough people annoyed by this.  People watch those ESPN highlights and they don't realize that they just watched 2 minutes of video with 15 seconds of actual game highlights.  We need more people to be bothered by this.  Cmon people!  Get annoyed!
3762
They just underwent a name change to "Primewares" -- probably because it's shorter and easier to type.
;D

OK...well....I feel slightly embarrassed.  The highlight of the Donovan play is now on ESPN.  Fine.  Whatever.  My argument still stands for the  most part.  Maybe not for this specific case, but it still applies in general.
3764
I'm still on permanent GF 1.0

I have no plans to upgrade.
I'm on GF 12.3 build 432.  It's been pretty much bloatware since v4.  Nice, shiny buttons...doesn't really do anything useful.  And the upgrades are not free.

I know this has been discussed ad nauseam, and I don't plan on adding anything too much new to it, but I am so so so so sick of copyright issues.  I mean, you try to do the right thing, but it's so hard.  Especially for us computer geeks, who know how to configure everything and where all the "alternatives" are.

The latest example:
So Donovan scored that goal for the US in the World Cup.  Now I don't give two sh-ts about soccer, but I like a good sports story, so I at least wanted to see what happened.  Naturally, my first instinct is to go to ESPN.com.  Any highlights?  No.  As they do with many sports that they don't own the copyrights to (I'm thinking some tennis tournaments, etc...you know, the less popular ones), they don't have any actual highlights.  They just have talking heads discussing the game.  Like I want to listen to them.  And they trick you by putting a picture of the play as the static photo with the "play" button watermarked on it, but when you click on it, you just get the analysts.  So ESPN (THE sports website doesn't have the highlight).

The next obvious thing to try: google.  So I search for "donovan goal video".  What do I get?  Jack squat.  A bunch of stupid sites that for some reason have the word video and usa algeria, and all the other right words, but no actual video of the goal.  In fact, many of them don't have a video of anything.  Of course, many also have more people talking about the goal, but not the goal itself.

Great, now I think, "Oh! duh...why don't I just go to FIFA's website.  Surely, they must have the highlights."  Well, it looks like they do...but none of the videos play for me.  So I think maybe it's my ad muncher blocking it.  So I tweak the settings, and even turn it off.  no go.  I shouldn't doubt ad muncher anyway, since it's pretty rock solid with this stuff.  Then I research a little bit and I find out that FIFA blocks the videos in certain countries because of copyright issues.  Now, i don't know if that was the problem with me, but I wouldn't be surprised.

I mean, what the F??  Seriously.  How does this not drive you crazy??  Give me one good reason why i shouldn't go get the torrent for this game and watch it in peace?  Heck, I don't even care about the game, I just want to see that goal!!  My experience is telling me that it's less hassle to download a huge ~4GB (I don't know how big it is) video file just to watch 30 seconds, than it is to go to the "right" places to watch it.

Now, please, i'm not interested in where all you guys watch the videos.  I'm sure some of you will tell me I'm not going to the right website..."Why don't you just go to something.com?"  That's not the point.  My point is, why do this to people?  It's wrong.  it's mean.  It's disrespectful.

Why do commercials on these highlight videos play quickly and flawlessly, and when the main content arrives, it loads slowly and is often choppy?  It's not an innocent mistake.  It's done intentionally.  Once again, it is disrespectful to the public consumers.

And speaking about ESPN highlight videos, here's a rant for you.  I go there to watch NBA highlights during the season.  Do you know what they do?  First of all, they make sure to compress the highlights into the shortest time possible.  No more than 30 seconds.  God forbid we actually get to somewhat digest the game.  not only that, but the first 15 seconds is an ESPN schmuck who tells you about the game.  I DON"T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT JIM BASQUIL...SHOW ME KOBE!!!  So now, the game video is only 15 seconds.  So how do the choose what to show in this precious few seconds?  Well, they normally start in the 4th quarter, because surly, nobody cares about the first three-quarters of the game.  In fact, the schmuck announcer often says, "And we go straight to the 4th...".  Now, to top it off, after you are blessed with 15 seconds of game video, you get about 30 seconds of a screen that shows the box score.  And the schmuck is talking this whole time as well.

So in this age where we have all this technology, we see even less than we did 20 years ago.  Why is there such a time restriction on the NBA highlights?  It's not like it's on TV, it's the internet!!  You can make it as long as you want, nobody is going to care?  Ah, but somebody does.  I suspect it's also a copyright issue.  I'll bet, and I'm not 100% sure, but I'll bet that the NBA only allows a certain number of seconds of video to be shown before ESPN has to pay additional copyright fees or something.  I can't logically explain it any other way.  Either that, or ESPN is truly an asshole and they just want to piss everybody off.

We have multiple camera angles, we have super slow motion technology, we have so much...yet we get to see so little.  We honestly see less than we did 20 years ago.  These corporations are so intensely focused on their copyright protection, that they protect their content all the way to zero-viewership.  They spend millions of dollars getting all the camera angles and slow motion capability, but the public only sees like 1% of it.  So what happens to the rest?  They store it somewhere.  Someday, when a millionaire producer wants to make a documentary, he can comb through those videos and find some footage for himself.  The rest of us?  Sorry.  Pretty great, eh?
3766
Yeah!  I haven't won anything in a long time!  Thanks DC and DonL.
3767
Just saw this one:
http://homyfads.sunlitgreen.com/
That's an excellent find!  Thanks.
3768
there are even physical monitoring devices that can capture your username and password... and who's to say that if the computer is fine that the network itself isn't vulnerable?

point blank, it's risky to use nearly any public connection or computer, no matter how safe you are. it's like having sex with a hooker, they could be clean, or they could be dirty and you might be ok with a condom, or you might use a condom and manage to get an STD anyway. no matter how you slice it, it's risky business.
mmm...all good points.  Is it just my dirty mind, or does scancode's avatar look like a punctured condom?
3769
I agree.  HOWEVER...
having the sections makes it easier to find things if you need to browse.  in other words, sometimes if you don't know exactly what you are looking for and you don't know which keywords to search for, it might be really hard to find something.  That's my only comment about this.  Otherwise, it's a good idea.

In other forums, the members are usually pretty snarky about duplicate posts.  Sometimes you'll start a new thread, and the response will be "This has already been discussed before".  I hate that.  But I don't see that happening here, so I say go for fewer sections.
3770
That's right...it's support I am talking about.

Linux comes with "google it and hope you find an answer you can understand". That's what makes it not ready for the masses. That's the real image problem it has.

Very true. That's a massive part of the problem.

On the flip side though, some companies like Novell have support available. That's for their enterprise version though. For normal users, unfortunately... support is, well... would "poor" be an overstatement?
Ah!  Didn't even think about that.  See!  I'm so used to finding this stuff out through forums, google, etc. that i take it for granted that most people don't even know to do that!
3771
Seriously, why does this have to happen?  When I have to stick in a blank cd or dvd, the computer has to pause while it reads it.  Ok, not all of the computer pauses...but the file explorer and burning software both pause.  Why?  Why aren't be beyond this yet?
3772
Most people are going to judge the product int he first 30 seconds of holding it.

This is what I mean about Ubuntu and Suse. If you had a blind taste test, you'd find that Ubuntu is nicer than OS X.

The thing is they aren't judging the PRODUCT. They are judging the product image, and how they fit in with it. Linux has a crap image. It's for "geeks and weirdos". OS X is for "cool, savvy, rich and fashionable people that are tuned in and in-the-know". There's a distinct break between the reality there. Ubuntu is simply easier to use and friendlier. They've done a spectacular job. (Linux today is nothing like it was 10 years ago -- it really is excellent now.)
Well, yes and no.  Let me explain.  Most people don't even know about opensuse or the other distros.  They don't know about Ubuntu.  if you say "Linux" they are probably thinking a screen with a command prompt and weird commands that only their IT geeks know.  Now, even though they are incorrect, this is the common perception.

So that's good that the Linux distros are paying attention to UI.  Now their challenge to is to get people to notice.  I suggest other companies who people are already noticing (Sony, etc.) do what Linux is doing and give users a nice interface.  All these companies have different problems.  Sony is popular, but it's a crappy user experience.  Linux is a nice experience, but nobody knows about it.  Two different challenges.  Apple:  everyone knows about it, and it's a nice experience (for most).
3773
I find that Ubuntu and Suse are nicer to use than OS X, so in some ways, I think that coolness factor could rub off there. It seems to me that there's a lack of ability for Linux distros to communicate that coolness though. I suppose that is Apple's magic where they make themselves cool.

Well, short of a $150mn worth of marketing here, $80mn there, and the entire US media absolutely gaga over everything Apple, why would they bother to notice? I can make my KDE (on openSUSE) mimic either Win7 or OSX with themes, but I don't. As you say, I think the defaults are even better. But after you've paid all that money, you better like what you bought from Apple! (Or you're going to feel mighty stupid.)
Z, I guess my point is that YOU are the one doing the work to get the interface you want.  And that makes you a rare kind of person.  You know how to tweak it, where to find it.  Just the knowledge that opensuse exists makes you different vs the general public.

My real real point is...other companies should put more effort or thought into that shiny, slick UI for their products.  Don't make the user figure it out on their own.  Not everyone is like Z, or me, or most of the people here.  Most people are going to judge the product int he first 30 seconds of holding it.  That's how people are.  i'm not saying it's right or wrong.  Heck, I'm trying to help apple's competitors!
3774
you know, i went back to the website...I didn't see anything about the standalone version.  I think there's a misunderstanding somewhere.  it's still a web only product.  It has a frontend that you can use on your PC, but it's still a web only product.  Maybe I'm mistaken, but I haven't seen anything to indicate otherwise.  And I didn't see any update to the old 2.2 version.

Are you serious? Try the big Download Now button below Evernote for Windows on the right hand side of http://www.evernote.com. The filename is Evernote_3.5.4.2343.exe. Last time I checked you could create local notebooks in addition to accessing the web notebooks (Sadly the Windows Mobile version doesn't have local notebooks (last time I checked)).

EDIT: Just thought of this: Make sure you are not logged in when you go to the site
Well, to be honest, i didn't try it.  but I remember when v3 came out and I tried it, even if it can actually store the files locally, I didn't want to continue using it because it forced me to go through a registration process (userid, password).  I didn't see a way to just use the program without registering anywhere for anything.  But let me know if that is not the case anymore.  Maybe I'll try it out again at home in a sandbox or something.
3775
Well, I guess 2 years ago it looked like the standalone version of Evernote was going away. It is still alive and kicking as far as I can tell, in fact there was an update this month.
Really!  I had no idea.  I have to give it a try.  Awesome, thanks.

Please will you report if you do try it?  I too thought that EverNote standalone (assuming that means the version that saves its files locally, not on their server) was dead.  I'd be interested to know if they updated the Firefox extension, too.
