Official Announcements / Re: Name and Catchphrase for New DC Logo Mascot - PART 2
« Last post by nudone on November 21, 2005, 08:38 AM »
how about instead of having a coin in the beak of the bird i draw a 'mouse' dangling there instead?

rather like a worm would dangle from the beak but instead it will be a mouse - mouse as in pointing device not a rodent.

when you run it it will run for about 45 minutes, seem like its doing a lot of stuff but really be doing nothing.  and at the end report a whole bunch of made up stuff about how the computer is 100% fixed and clean, but that because of hardware incompatibilities with the newest Microsoft Windows service packs, the user should perform a complete reinstall of windows in exactly 7 days.

mouser, you are a genius. shame you didn't keep it quiet and just market the idea - you could have earned millions from the best clean-up tool ever made.

The slight turn of the forward-facing bird makes all the difference.  Like, any second now, it will turn all the way toward me and jump onto my desk.  The ones looking off into the distance lose the "adorableness" factor.  Also, the sketchier one seems more friendly and accessible.  Good work.

thanks momonan, a smile and a slight change in face position certainly does make a difference - it's obvious when you see it but it just never occurred to me at the beginning to include a smile. i think i'll have to do a bit of study regarding cartoon illustrating.

thanks also to brotheS, Darwin and everyone else who likes the mascot so far. i like Carol's Donatey and Cody idea - having a second character could lead to some interesting visual ideas.

as for the $ changing to a local currency symbol of the visitor's browser - i would guess that's possible with flash.

this is probably getting a bit tedious but i've just changed the angle of the face on the sketch version and made the vector version a little happier.

maybe send me the vector art file if you dont mind?, i might give it a try in flash

i'll email it in a mo...

sorry for the delay.

i hope you will find this version of the bird a little more like the original sketch - it also looks a bit happier. personally i think it looks better than the clean vector version.

have you got the images (cars)?

if i've got some spare moments over the weekend i don't mind sticking the numbers on the screens - if that's all you want (you know, blended in, transformed perspective, etc).

Nighted, i just wanted to add that i know how you feel about 'clipcache'. i've tried everything else (as far as i know of) and i always return to 'clipcache' - mainly because of the hotkey menu thing - best idea i've seen on these types of apps.

not tried the new beta but it sounds like i'm not going to like it.

hopefully mouser's util will incorporate the hotkey menu thingy on day  :)

(later tonight) i'll trace over the 'sketch' version of the bird so it looks a bit better at small banner sizes and more defined in general.

i'll also try to do a few other versions with the bird appearing a bit happier and more face on, etc. as requested above.

i'll also use Carol's circle idea if no one has updated it by the time i get around to it...

hope this helps stir the creative juices a bit more in everyone.

done in fireworks - but i'll tidy them up in illustrator, kerning the letters, etc. if these pass approval.

i can still move things around if anyone wants to make suggestions. or change colours, etc, etc.

just one thing to remember is if you would like a flash animation banner then it helps to keep the graphics as simple as possible - which is what i've done so far.

it looks like the bird logo idea has been decided upon (november fundraiser banner) so i'll do a few versions of the bird/coin sketch in a bolder cartoony form for you to choose from (or dismiss).

regarding animations in flash - i can but it will take me a bit of time (like everything does).

i'll use the DC with the bird inside idea also - with thicker letters (they definitely need to be 'fatter' for smaller logo sizes).

i'll try and get something posted back within the next few hours...

just a few quick ideas.

if anyone wants to see them done properly with vector graphics then i'll do them later (maybe tomorrow).

any suggestions for variations or improvements?

top one is a stash of cash morfing into binary code.

middle one is a bird holding a coin with a cat coding in front of a monitor - monitor can have something more appropriate on the screen.

bottom one is sort of like a bird holding a coin hovering above binary code.

of course, i've mostly just added to the ideas that were already mentioned above.

this is another free service/tool from the above people.

http://www.writeboard.com/

looks kind of useful to me - not as grand as a wiki but good for small projects ???

i find it bizarre that someone would take the time to register AND leave their email address in their profile (assuming it is legit) and then leave such a short post.

any idea what   is supposed to mean?

is this some kind of test? are there clues as to fw190a's real identity and motives hidden within the brief message.

is it wrong to ignore someone who is obviously so troubled/upset/angered/moronic?

you've probably realised by now Carol but you can have the new tabs open up above the current page you are looking at instead of underneath (in Maxthon).

it's the kind of program you need to play around with pretty much every option in the config to get the most use out of.

i know it took me a while to finally get the settings just how i like them.

you don't have to submit your email address Carol, you don't even have to submit your name if you don't want to. it will still work if you just fill in the comment box and nothing more - it will then display 'anonymous user' or something.

i used to use 'PerfectMenu' many moons ago - at the time i thought it was an essential bit of kit.

then i just must have somehow got out of the habit of using it - maybe there was some annoying thing about it.

the concept is a great idea though - er, i think.

Living Room / vulnerability attack test
« Last post by nudone on September 14, 2005, 02:44 PM »
this will probably sound like an odd request, but does anyone know if i can download a database of nasty trojans and things to attack my system.

i'd isolate my computer and make backups and images of everything before attempting to infect my pc.

the reason for all this is that i'd like to compare a few of the main security programs out there - i'd like to see which performs better. which method of realtime protection or scanning appeals to me, then i can wipe everything off and restore from the backup images.

i've read reports in pc magazines where they perform similar tests on infected machines that they keep for review purposes.

is it possible to get an 'infection' database file full of nasties or do such things not exist due to the harm they could do.

or, is this method i describe just stupid anyway? if there is a better way please share your thoughts.
