Amazon did this with kindle and they found out that this is not working as they expected. You can't stop people from book loaning or sharing as this is part of society. So they started new twisted version of loaning the book. They have a premium membership where users can get books for set period for free and the book author gets fund based on the loaned numbers*book value+/- few other variables.

If what this developer says turns out into reality will surely create problem to limited period. Life will go on once again because most of the time consumers whine and they get back to the entertainment again. This is the reason using windows desktop is turning out to be more of problem compared to linux and apple. People who subscribe to -"life is too shot" are going to be playing games even in this walled garden condition. Steam is one more area where they may control the loaning or resell or transfer of the games, which is surely going to affect their business, because industry is watching how amazon and apple are winning by restricting consumers into the walled garden. I am not surprised to see game devs interested in doing this. Sometimes I feel 40hz's comments related to these market control are indeed coming out as a reality. I find it hard to see game sellers making changes in the box or dvd's in a such way that taking that dvd to friends house during weekend is going to be a crime or going to make copy useless in any other machine after single installation. That sucks, it's worst than piracy. It's like using some chinese gadget for a month and later using it as paperweight.

@4wd, search is now personalized based on IP, search history and with other variables. What you see in results is not common for others, not even for the most obvious keywords, we all are getting different search results. I too don't see TPB, Rapidshare on google results anymore.

@40hz, I'm on FOSS side, so you're free to use my comments.  :D

Coming back to the topic, I heard the news in one of the IRC room that some of the MPAA guys are setting up trackers inside torrent and sending notice to the ISPs (and in turn users). Check out demonoid site and search for x-men first class small size torrent, in the comments you'll find that people are complaining about such notice from ISP.

I'll get right on your deb file, have to fix my linux box.

In between, I was planning to use pyside for porting some of the coding snacks apps to linux. Only issue here is that I have trouble working with pyside on windows right now. I'll update shortly.

Living Room / Re: Main hard drive in my PC died today suddenly
« Last post by mahesh2k on February 06, 2012, 04:59 PM »
Here's something that happened to me. My one laptop with linux on it died. It crashed due to overheat and now the display issue is bugging me. HP's DV2500T model has similar other problems and as per my searching on the web, it's just not me. HP support office is asking me to pay 300$ to fix display/overheating/battery, which I'm not going to do for 4 year old laptop.

I can use alternate screen to transfer data but I need S-video cable for viewing the screen. I hope linux isn't crashed inside because I want to take backup of data. It seems HP laptop was my worst buying decision.

I'm using ubuntu 11.04 on hard drive (and Slitaz in virtualbox). I do have Ubuntu 10.04/11.10 discs, just in case if i need them.

Sure, I can test those packages if you want.

I do take regular backups but when processor and motherboard dies and when there is no spare computer, It is *that* uncomfortable feeling, like something is lost. :(

I don't take drive monitoring type of backups. I just plug USB Hard drive when my particular backup folder piles up daily.

I can't use amazon either because I'm not from US. I prefer to use Juno downloads for trance (or any other electronic) music singles. What is the genre of that track? I might suggest a better shop that accepts international users.

General Software Discussion / Re: Ubuntu's Latest Interface "Brainstorm" - HUD
« Last post by mahesh2k on February 01, 2012, 03:24 PM »
Quote from Mark shuttleworth's blog:  Even casual users find typing faster than mousing.
No wonder he's favoring HUD.

Tablet computers are popular not because it allows you to type more but it has point and click ability (like mouse) which saves them time from typing every minute thing out there as well as shows cool UI which has it's psychological effect on user. Moving file/edit menus to search must be the biggest joke ever played by canonical's linux dept.

I agree with barney, this is change for the sake of change. I don't like the new gnome UI. It may be touch screen friendly or friendly to those who like to see fancy graphics. I am using xfce whenever I get bored of the interface, I use unity for quick file searching though, It is good at that. I am also keeping tab on Mate desktop, they're going to revive old gnome menu interface and going to support everything - other than slingshot interface in ubuntu.

Assuming desktop users will like slingshot UI is the biggest mistake IMO, which will result in no different than people hating tiles on windows 8. It is also very hard to guide someone over phone or skype with this type of cluttered UI. Not even KDE made changes to their desktop version when they declared spak, so I don't know why gnome (and ubuntu/canonical) assume UI simplicity without considering average linux users. I guess this year I'll be switching to Mate anyway.

I think none of the editor based solutions are going to work for you. Most of these tools are made with indie developers in mind. I think you need to use custom solution or maybe you can start from scratch using python or some other language like c++ ?

20% of your body -- of YOU -- is OWNED thanks to patents on humans.

This reminds me of new movie - "In Time". It's crappy movie but pretty much touch on all these points of - capitalism, resource hogging and crime.

I do not consider myself a fanboy of any company.
That post wasn't aimed at you or anyone here at DC, Josh. I hope others don't get that idea with my post. I need to add this in my previous post that that observation was from my experience with people like pirilio and the pro-posters at google+.

I don't get one thing though - Why apple and google fanbois think that privacy breach  and patent trolling from Facebook, MS and other corps is evil but from their messiah companies isn't ? Is there something that I am seriously not paying attention to? What makes google no-evil corp? Or people are just choosing it as necessary-evil?

Google has enough personal information and influence on people which could be easily accessible by governments/political parties/mega corps, google ain't saint to avoid their money or involvement. In fact indian government is in process to use RIM and Google for monitoring outgoing data in sensitive regions. Besides that google also pays to people like chris pirilio, scoble and few others to promote their services. Considering google's trolling in kenya for stealing small business information, It's pretty much possible that they can easily penetrate into third world countries without any political restriction and do *any* evil and get away with it. So it's not paranoia against them. Anyone with internet access can easily verify this. I still don't understand If I'm missing something about google or these journalists/social media folks/fanbois are riding on google to benefit their career or needs?

I helped with hostgator application and it seems hg staff removed the articles. I don't know if that site is going to take rest of the copied content. Not my problem with all that stuff. But if anyone wants to prove the content ownership, use web archive for the cached text and also google index has earlier date. This makes things easy for proving text based  content's origin. There's no way to help in case of graphics. It'll be reused unless there is watermark or some sort of protection.

@Ren, I'm not supporting SOPA in the way it is mixed with political motives. But original intention of SOPA was to protect someone's intellectual property. It has nothing to do with freedom of speech. Freedom of expression doesn't mean stealing and if it means that there should be open stealing then I guess we're inviting flawed socialism with broken communist and capitalist model all in one by crushing authors/artists revenue model.

@40hz, problem is that the images and content clearly shows that it is her property. I mean it's obvious that your pic is YOUR pic which is hosted on your blog, right? If any scraper is copying that content and asking you to prove that if it's your property (even after getting an email from the same scraped domain email) then it is offensive. Hostgator removed that content from above site and is taking further action on webmaster. Problem with giving proofs to such scraper is that, if you look at their scraped sites content, there is no need for giving any proof to thieves. It's like giving proof to murderer who is standing next to the corpse with blood on his clothes and knife.
