General Software Discussion / Re: starting a revolt against Opera. Worth it?
« Last post by yksyks on January 17, 2008, 11:27 AM »
I left the Opera forum some time ago, there's no feedback from the developers and most of the members only post nonsense or insult each other. To be honest, though, the latest Opera 9.5 beta (Kestrel) is the most compatible of all versions since version 3. I was also tempted to leave Opera, but I changed my mind lately and it's still my default browser. Also, almost all "problematc" websites I reported there are displaying quite well in Kestrel now.

I don't believe it's worth organize anything you suggest, nobody would care. On the other hand, I just signed the Save XP petition, thanks for the tip.

According to my experience with SpamPal, discussed here, there's no reliable way to filter spam with a single method/filter. In my situation the Bayesian filter gets about 80% of spam, the rest is divided between RegEx and collaborative (P2P) filters. In fact the latter using DCC is becoming more and more useful, especially with the spam of type described here.

Libronix Logos looks quite impressive. But the cheapest version for $150? Ouch! Not very christianly... Gonna stay with free Theophilos. It serves me pretty well for years.

General Software Discussion / Re: Dealing with spam
« Last post by yksyks on January 06, 2008, 09:11 AM »
I'm using for a quite long time SpamPal (freeware) on a dedicated server (rather old computer running Win2000) with the last freeware version of a mail server 602Lan Suite. SpamPal combines several filter techniques using plugins, which is inevitable nowadays, including RegEx, Bayesian, collaborative filtering and others. It also uses public blacklists, which are becoming more and more unreliable. Very useful is an automated whitelist, i.e., all persons you write to are automatically whitelisted. Manual black- and whitelists are of course available, too.

The program unfortunately lacks any further development due to serious health problems of its author, however, it still runs almost perfectly. It takes some time to tweak it properly according to your spam profile. There's also an inevitable period of time spent on teaching the Bayesian filter, but this all applies to all similar applications. I'm doing this management using RealVNC, but after some time there's almost no need to touch it.

Also promising might be Spamato, does anyone have any experience?

Here's a program Theophilos, which I'm using regularly. It's freeware, but you have to pay for some special features and texts, which I never needed. For free you get:

  • Full version of Theophilos Bible Software. No registration fees, no expiration reminder screens. This is not a so called "Demo" or "Light" version either.
  • Full text of King James (Authorized) version of the English Bible (including Old and New testaments) with Christ's words in red
  • Complete Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on the whole Bible
  • Complete Easton's Bible Dictionary
  • Preview of multimedia Bible narration with pictures and sound
  • Greatest Bible Passages jumplist

... and much more. This all in many languages (both GUI and the Bible texts). Especially useful is a synchronized scrolling of different versions for comparison, and of course searching.

General Software Discussion / Re: FastFontPreview - freeware font viewer
« Last post by yksyks on January 05, 2008, 03:18 AM »
My general feature request for all font programs is:
A display more where the main pane is 99% just pure font previews.

Maybe AMP Font Viewer (freeware) might suite your needs. Just press Ctrl-T and configure the display as you want.

I prefer this one over the FastFontPreview, as the latter cannot display not installed OpenType fonts.

Thanks again, I've read this one, too. I'm going to stick with PhraseExpress for the time being. There's only one issue I've encountered so far: it collides with TapTap, sometimes invoking its function for double-click on Ctrl key. Anyone else?

Sorry, but I have to ask similar question again: How does Filebox eXtender compare to FlashFolder? The latter seems to me more convenient. Are there any extra features?

lanux128: Thanks, I did already. In fact I have to admit that I jumped the gun a bit when I wrote that PhraseExpress is an overkill for my needs. In the meantime I browsed the manual and it payed off, as I discovered a lot of power in PhraseExpress which I was not aware of. For example, can some of its competitors offer the user input in the middle of automatic phrase? Or selecting from menu of choices (like "Mr." or "Mrs.") and continue? This seems to me very powerful and useful. Also, importing autocorrect entries from MS Office is quite a nice feature.

I don't get it fully either, but if you happen to use Outlook and want to view calendar with your appointments (or any Outlook folder), there's a brand new version of Outlook on the Desktop. The Outlook even doesn't have to be running.

That's what I wrote. It is definitely cool. Just the extra space bugs me a bit... Trying PhraseExpress at the moment, but this is an overkill for my needs. (But it doesn't clear the clipboard and doesn't add the space...)

J-Mac and others: Yadabyte Subtext is great, thanks! It's a good example of non-bloated application that doest just what it's supposed to do.

However, I found two small issues:

  • First, it uses Windows clipboard, which is probably necessary, but might not be always comfortable. Not a big issue, as I'm using Ditto, though.
  • Second, it always puts a space after the pasted text. This should be so when typing a space, but when I press Enter, I'd like to have a new line in the text, not the space. Anyone able to modify this? (It's an open-source.)

1. NirCmd

2. Never heard of any, but it must be a feature of some sophisticated system activity monitor.

Here are the modified XsX cursors with shadows. I intentionally didn't modify the Text select and Precision pointer, as the shadow makes them a bit unclear. Just replace the originals and proceed the same way. Enjoy!

By the way, any idea why the "Enable pointer shadow" option doesn't work?

Back to the topic: After a few days using the XsX Alphablended Cursors I realized that I'm missing the shadow under the cursors. The "Enable pointer shadow" option does nothing, I don't know why. Any idea?

However, I managed to add the shadows to the individual cursor files and at least for me they are visually more distinctive on the screen:

Anyone interested?

The hardest part was to find an application capable of editing or keeping the cursor hot spot. IcoFX, which is otherwise an excellent application, lacks this feature, but RealWorld Cursor Editor can do this, and much more, and it's freeware.

The TweakUI setting works fine, the problem for me is that it doesn't stay too long. I tried to find the culprit and the one caught was ATI Catalyst video driver suite which resets this setting upon every restart. This can be easily fixed by running simple batch file like this:

REG ADD "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop" /v  /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00030d40 /f
REG ADD "HKU\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop" /v ForegroundLockTimeout /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00030d40 /f

I'm running this as a last program on startup and it helps. However, from time to time the setting gets reset anyway and so far the culprit escapes.

I'm using RegMon for monitoring the value "ForegroundLockTimeout" changes.

Finally I yielded to all the praise on Dexpot and gave it a try. I must confirm that it's really powerful application. There's one issue that bugs me so that I stopped using it, though. It's a taskbar reordering when switching between desktops. Does anyone know a trick to fix this, please? (The option "Disable taskbar reordering" does nothing. Maybe a bug?)

I'm using for similar reasons 602LAN SUITE by http://www.software602.com/. As far as I know the last free version for up to 5 users is 2004.0.06.1017. It's running here for years without any problem. Serves as a web-mail server, proxy and NAT, by the way. Remote access via web browser is also possible.

It's out of this topic, but let's hope others will excuse: My problem was when trying to upgrade to ATI Catalyst 7.10 for ATI Radeon X800 card. It displayed some warning at the beginning of uninstallation, but I was unable to read it. (It's necessary to completely remove all ATI software first, they say.) After first reboot it still ran in the same video mode, while it should run in some basic one and on a single monitor only. I finished the installation anyway thus creating quite unstable system with many strange symptoms. Then I realized that I should start all over. The second attempt went okay and it's still running good.

The painful part is that you have to set everything from scratch, recalibrate monitors, install Hydravision (if you need it, but I do, unfortunately) and set up again all the keyboard shortcuts. Also, QTTabBar stopped working. So you have to uninstall it, and reinstall again. Fortunately I've recently discovered how to save and restore its settings, which saves a lot of time.

In short, if everything goes well, it takes at least four restarts and some superfluous work just to update video driver and its bloated suite.
