I have a mini-set of Zen Magnets and they are really great.  I just regret I didn't buy the full set...

You mean the full Zen set or the Mandala set, which has the same number of magnets as 8 Zen sets?

Did you try  https://www.donation...hotcaptor/index.html ?
You may also want to get a free license of Ashampoo Snap 2 or 3, which offer this feature.  For a free 2.5 license, go to http://store.v3.co.u...poo_magical_snap_250
I am sure there are also free licenses of V3 from some other promotion.

Living Room / Re: Nokia CEO admits that the cell phone industry is a gimmick.

It would be very nice to see total decoupling, as THAT would make the market truly competitive. i.e. Decouple everything so you buy 3 things:

  • Phone - the device
  • OS - e.g. Android, Windows Mobile
  • Service - i.e. the carrier
Hell yeah!

Just imagine the complexity !  A user should install the specific drivers for a given hardware, then configure it to match its plan.

I once bought a Nokia, the one that could be unfolded so as to propose a big qwerty keyboard. It was not on my Carrier catalog.  It was a living hell to configure it.

Hi Folks,

i am still searching for an tool to collect infos and documents.

It should be fully portable.
I don't like the all-in-one-databasefile thing anymore.

...

Right now i do this in TotalCommander by using Ctrl+Q and test several outliners... but i am still at the search.

Any ideas?  ;)  Then please share, thanks.

UltraRecall is not fully compliant with your specifications, but it's a great tool to organize and carry data on a removable media.
Else you have Briefcase from SSuite Software : http://www.ssuitesof...rtable.htm#348884752

I just discovered Bvckup and really like what I'm seeing with this beta synchronization software. Seems the features are well thought out and implemented in a simplified GUI.

Bvckup is currently free during the beta stage and will be $19.95 for a personal license/$49.95 for a commercial license.

BUT take note Bvckup beta testers are appreciated by the author. 8)

I recently had a look at bvckup and it's incredibly promising, the installer is just around 400kbB and it's already such a powerful product.  I like the delta update feature, plus all the bonuses added by the developer.  I strongly recommend that anyone reading this thread give it a try :) !

If you're sufficiently cheesed off, you might like to compare it with AJC Active Backup, which has also featured on Bits du Jour.

Thanks for the advice.  Actually I already have one license of AJC AB (which I find great) but I just wanted to try this other one, which as some advantages over AJC (easier to configure, non proprietary archive format, etc.).

About SFFS being overkill, I don't think so.  One doesn't have to set all options, basic default ones are already well suited to most tasks, it has also a rather unique feature I like a lot : when you move a file within source folder (from a subfolder to another one), then SFFS moves the same file in the same way on the destination without erasing it from the first location and copying it to the second.

Hi,

I recently purchased a license of History Explorer (through bitsdujour), a software that manages nicely document revisions, by saving all versions (not very HDD space friendly I admit).

First, I got the license for V2.2, but the available download was 2.1 only.  I realized that when trial expired and when I tried to enter my license in the software.  Not a very good start.

Then, with 2.2 version, I came across a nasty & well hidden bug, which seems to occur when files having quotes (') in their names are monitored.  In that case , purging the database or removing old backups won't work.  They never acknowledged the issue and didn't even respond to my mails where I explained how I found this (took me some time).  I find this rather rude from them.

Too bad since it is quite easy to use and efficient.

I have been using V2 since several months, it's been working flawlessly, consumes very little system resources, except maybe for the initial backup.  I am still using V2 but will soon install the V3. I like the fact it stores different revisions of a saved file in an elegant way, and you need no software to recover the last version.  With V3 you can have you backup on 2 different HDD, increasing safety.

SM has a terrible flaw in that area, I have tried to talk to their support but they didn't really listen : all modifications to the registry are backuped and accessible in the undo area *BUT* this undo data will be purged automatically my SM, after a while (a short one).  Sometimes it takes days or weeks before in registry operation exibits an issue, by then it's too late.  I won't renew my license this year !

Living Room / Re: lap top cooling pad
« Last post by MerleOne on July 31, 2010, 06:34 AM »

My daughter has an enormous beast of a laptop containing a desktop processor (HP NX9600). It's a desktop replacement model with a full sized keyboard w/numeric keypad. And it runs very hot, too hot to use as an actual laptop without cooking yourself.

Someone bought her a cooling pad for it, but it's too small and the fan in it spins in the wrong direction, causing the laptop to run hotter than without it.

So my daughter keeps it on her desk, elevated with 4 empty tuna fish cans, wondering if she were to slide a baking tray under there, if she could bake cookies with it.  :D

I have a Zalman Cooling pad used under a Dell Laptop 1536 or something that had T° issues (CPU gettings as hot as 80° Celsius).  Since the cooling pad, no more brutal poweroff and T° never goes above 70°C, average being 50-60 °C.  Still hot but working so far.

-I really didn't expect this, so I am pleased!

Forgive me being impressed by small details, but I am also quite pleased that even though the new version installed into \jv16 PowerTools 2010\, it managed to find the key which was placed in \jv16 PowerTools 2009\ , during the installation and without asking!

I noticed that too, excellent !

Nope dont know when the coupon will stop working, refresh surface not sure how will be effective, rby reading and writing each sector and electronically realigning the data underneath a drive’s read/write heads. Well this demands a more robust soft; never tried this feature with Hard Disk Sentinel, but the offer 40%off is interesting and who knows how big will become the soft with updates.

Well try spinrite (shareware) and see if something is going wrong with the hard drive as bad sectors.

I looked again and I found that the Refresh feature is supposedly non destructive.

I tried to download the free version, but the .zip archive contains the pro version.  How did you get the free version ?

Thanks.

Edited : solved ! The website says the free version =  pro version unregistered.

I tried the free version sometime ago, it does what it claims, I used more activesmart, well some should be careful since the pc will shut down if the Temp of the hard drive reaches the fixed Temp to maintain hard drive life, well its SMART technology in every case of this kind soft.

That's good to know, thanks. I was in particular looking at the "refresh surface" feature of the Pro version, but it seems to be destructive (it erases the data).

Do you know how long the coupon will work ?

I am sometimes using the Ram Manager integrated with WinUtilities Pro.  I find it gives good results after my XP PC is out of hibernation and there is a lot of accesses to the pagefile.  After an optim, it settles down and my PC resumes "normal" operation.

No, it doesn't !  To give an example of what I meant : I record DVB-T shows on my PC with a Terratec USB receiver.  The result is a mpeg2 file.  To view it in the best possible way, I turn it into a DVD.  There, two scenario occur : either the DVD mastering software reencodes the mpeg2 file or it just processes it without re-encoding it.  In the first scenario, on my PC, DVD mastering takes 1 or 2 hours, in the second, only 10 minutes.  That's why re-encoding is an issue for me, if it occurs when it's not necessary.
