Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Phone Disk-Until September December 1st 2010
« Last post by Darwin on October 31, 2010, 05:22 PM »
My emphasis on a windows 7 phone is mostly because I anticipate it to have excellent inter-operability with my Windows 7 notebook computer and Office 2010 apps... I'm pretty drawn to Android phones, though... I'm going to wait until the Win7 phones are out here so that I can compare.

WRT the Archos 3cam Vision... it DEFINITELY does not compare to the iPod Touch in either quality or features. I bought one for my 8 year old son (I don't want him to have internet access for a while yet) and so far I've been impressed with it as a media player, though. Even the reactive touchscreen isn't too bad.

[OT] update to my answer to Armando's question about what I'm going to buy instead:

I'm also monitoring this soon to be released tablet from Archos. This one is already available, but I'm holding out for the bigger, capacitive* display of the4.3. I'm a bit underwhelmed by Archos' hardware quality compared to Apple, but so far my hands on experience has been a $100 8GB mp3 player compared to a $320 iPod Touch. I'm sure that the tablet will be made to higher specs.

Overall, I think I am more likely to go with a Windows 7 phone, though. I'll just have to wait and see.

*I've read conflicting reports about whether or not the display in the 4.3t is going to be capacitive or not... [/OT]

;D Thanks for posting in this thread, Don. I'm a bit of a "we fear change" type when it comes to software name changes. I was also unimpressed when another DC regular who is also a software developer (Pierre Landry) changed the name of his product from SQLNotes to InfoQube... my objections seem rather silly a year on!

Mine is two years old and has a vertical display of 800 (I presume - the resoution is 1280x800). Can't say I've ever noticed a problem reading text on it, though.

Well, what has changed is that Windows 7 is fully supported - v.3 would not save my databases from one system start to the next. This was a documented problem for many users. The underlying sourcecode has also been extensively re-written and the groundwork laid to add a bunch of features.

Here's the changelog for v.4:

17 October 2010 - do-Organizer version 4.0.6 released (major version)
Changes

•To the user, there doesn't "appear" to be many changes as all the major work has been "under the hood". But as you may appreciate, getting solid foundations laid is very important.
•A great deal of the database engine has changed in version 4. Taking over a year of development and testing , the engine is now faster than ever whilst providing a solid data storage platform. If sure you will notice the difference in speed.
•Improved Unicode recognition, especially where there are rich formatted notes. You will notice you can paste Arabic and a lot of other language text directly into do-Organizer 4 now.
•New SQL functions have been added to allow the advanced data query operators. Almost anything can be extraced and manipulated using the new functions. This gives great flexibility when the built-in Reports or List Grids fail to deliver exactly what you need.
•UI (User Interface) has been tweaked and corrected in a lot of places. There's quite a lot of hidden windows and forms so this is an ongoing development. However, our goal is not to change the UI too much so the learning curve remains steady and easy.
•Future protocols. Work has been done to enable the mailer, browser and other data streams to recognise some of the newer Internet protocols. This will diversify towards HTML5 and Android.

and what's coming up:

•Social and Virtual World connectivity, in particular, Second Life, OpenSim grids, FaceBook, Twitter and there will be a direct dedicated connection to our own 3d virtual world. More details on this is expected in the coming month or so.
•Scheduling integration of Calendar/Tasks/Resource. Improved relationships with contacts for easier and better scheduling based on frequency and some automatic virtual linking mechanisms.
•Finance and transactions will be enhanced for those businesses running virtual and website business. Improved import and customer tracking for purchases of virtual world goods. This will also work the other way around for customers who wish to track expenses throughout their social communications and virtual purchases to websites and other membership areas.
•Photo Gallery organization. This will be a unique ability to manage multiple images easier especially for photographs and easier faster ways to upload to places like Flickr.
•Journals Blogging will be enhanced to better integrate and manage blog articles with links to blog distribution.
•Scribe will be enhanced to provide better Unicode support and also for authors of book publications to store complete chapters with ease. The main concentration with be towards writers of novels.
•Linx will be upgraded to use HTML5 and latest CSS. This means more accurate web pages rendered in the doBrowser as well as in the Mailer section and Javascript will be a whole lot faster. The proposed engine for use will be the same one used in the Google Chrome browser.
•do-Organizer 4 Enterprise will be a spin-off for those who wish to setup a large scale database. The database engine in use wil be MySQL, thereby allowing a userbase of literally thousands of connections. As this MySQL database can be hosted on your Linux servers, the link between web page business directly to the do4 database would be a lot easier, especially for managing customers and products.

Overall, I *hope* this signals good things for the future from gemX. It's been, what, three years since I started this thread? I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and watch development. I'm not really interested in the software anymore- for the reasons noted above - but am watching development with interest.

Ah... Dormouse beat me to posting! As always, more eloquent (and economical with his words) than I!

Good point, rgdot... As you note , the GUI isn't really changed very much, there are no new features (though a bunch of new stuff is promised for v.4.x). Upgrades are pretty cheap - $19.95. However, as I noted, I don't think I'll jump - I'm happy with my current workflow.

I can report, though, that I found the beta to be very stable and it worked well under Win 7 64-bit.

The Aluratek uses an LCD - the technology is called e-paper - and it's not backlit. I'm not sure in what other ways the LCD has been "tweaked" but there is no eye strain when reading it and it looks and works just like paper. I've used it outside in full sunlight without washout.

The only disadvantagethat I am aware of, compared with e-ink, is power consumption. However, I can get through 400-500 page turns out of a single charge, which I don't find too bad. However, e-ink gives 7500 page turns on a charge.

The main advantages over e-ink relate to page turning: doing is so is near instantaneous and you are not presented with a negative image of the page for a second before the next page is rendered.

BTW, my experience with an Aluratek Libre suggests that I read just as quickly, if not more quickly, reading digitally than old-fashioned paperbacks...

David Pogue reviews the Windows 7 phone in today's NY Times:

http://www.nytimes.c...e&ref=technology

I can't understand why Microsoft would  bring out a phone OS that does not support multitasking now, unless they hope it will can be a placeholder until they can put together something competitive. That's not going to work.

Heh, heh - I was just scratching my head over that one myself!

I watched an English review of the other Telus offering, the LG 7, and it looks fine as well. The reviewer said that it's a nice little phone that should be decently priced compared to higher spec'd brethren. The other issue, it turns out, is battery life - none of the phones are particularly efficient, but as one would expect, those with larger screens are even less efficient...

I'm watching/reading all the reviews that I can at the moment - hadn't picked up on the non-multitasking thing, to be honest. Must be more vigilant! I guess it boils down to me being a bit overwhelmed by the damn things - they do SO much and there is so much to be reviewed that details get lost in the shuffle for me...  :o

There is a version of this machine with a 256MB graphics card for about 550, but according to reviews that's a bit noisy then...

It'll be noisier because of the fan, I suspect. As you're not planning on using it for graphics intensive stuff, save your money. BTW, these days, even onboard GPU's are sufficient for photo manipulation tasks, etc. I *think* it's when you get into video editing and gaming that you'll notice a difference.

Damn! Carol beat me to it! That was going to be my solution, though I was going to suggest part of skwire's solution as a first step: use Acronis True Image or something similar to create an image of your XP install before you upgrade.

I did an in-place upgrade of Vista 64-bit to Windows 7 64-bit and have never regretted it (ie, there have never been any problems as a result, and I did it just over a year ago). This was with at least 200 non-MS applications installed as well.

Excellent point from wraith - I suffered with shared video on two notebooks before I got my current one and what a difference! Granted, each machine has been progressively higher spec, so one would expect graphics performance to improve along with everything else, but I've played around with Vista and Windows 7 (both OS'es have been on this machine) notebooks with onboard graphics, but otherwise similarly spec'd, and they simply do no compare. Having said that, if all you are doing is basic Office stuff and e-mail, it won't matter much but I suspect that you will probably be doing some more graphics intensive work, so...

I'm with superboyac on that... the RAM is an easier/safer upgrade than the CPU.

As far as I can tell, the cloud bits are off by default - I'm running the latest version and note that the Options tab has an option to "Allow PLUS Info data collection". The radio button for this setting is off.

Thanks for the link to the AnandTech review - very interesting! I'm feeling pretty good about Telus offering the HTC Surround now... Of course, I AM wondering if it wouldn't be prudent to wait until the Spring of 2011 (or so) before leaping... I"m not thrilled about Zune Pass being a requirement, but if I can uninstall Media Player (can I?) I wouldn't mind too much.

Screen resolution 800 × 480 (exactly)

I hope that increases to iPhone 4 resolutions soon because I won't be upgrading my phone until a non Apple product gets that resolution.

I'm both with you and against you on that one (though I am not a usual case, I don't think): on the one hand if higher resolution screens are available, I want the higher resolution! On the other hand. It's a phone with something between a 3 and a 4 inch screen. How much difference is higher resolution going to make?

Hmm... thank you for that perspective! I suppose there are advantages to having tech released later in Canada than in the US, Asia, and Europe. Hopefully, I'll have some time to pore over reviews.

General Software Discussion / Re: Opera to support extensions in V11
« Last post by Darwin on October 24, 2010, 05:52 PM »
Every day or two I check to see if Siber Systems have jumped on this. No joy, so far... However, they have released a version of Roboform to work with Chrome, so I remain optimistic!

As I stated above, the one area in which Opera can shine and thus woo users away from Firefox, IE, and Chrome is in its footprint. If they can continue to release versions that are lightweight and fast and which will run extensions such as Roboform (for me, the only "must have" browser extension), they have a fighting chance.

General Software Discussion / Re: graphs software
« Last post by Darwin on October 24, 2010, 05:49 PM »
Excel or, as widgewunnder notes above, Calc (NB - OpenOffice has been rebranded LibreOffice) work well. There are also SoftMaker Office and Kingsoft Office, both of which have spreadsheet programs and both of which will graph data.

Standalone, dedicated graphing software, I'm not so aware of. I DO know that above and beyond Excel's built-in graphing capabilities there are a myriad of third-party add-ins for Excel that expand upon it.
