General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 10 Announced

Something's bothering me, if they're only a month away, I'd hope it was rock solid! But it all still sounds like there are fundamental basic bugs going on!

As a former AOL user and all the experiences I had with upgrading to their new releases, I would recommend waiting at least 4 months after public release, before upgrading to Win10. By then you'll have enough reports of issues to know what you'll be getting yourself into, enough official info on what to do about common issues, and Microsoft will have had a chance to fix the big, potentially fatal ones.

I have no plans on being among the first to upgrade, later this month. I have no plans on installing Win10, till maybe after Christmas, since I do need my computer for work and I'd hate to leave my employer high & dry during the height of the Christmas shopping season, while I sort out Win10 upgrading issues.

Just a silly thought...

The "save" button in most software shows a floppy disk icon.

When was the last time you used a floppy disk?

It would have been 2006, to install drivers for a controller card, but I couldn't get a floppy drive to work in that machine, and ended up trading controller cards with my father, who had one that had drivers that could be installed from within Windows.

I don't get it. What's a mom stick?

A parody of those stupid, useless but expensive products that companies try to convince first time moms that they need to buy, otherwise their kid will end up all screwed up.

Kind of like this one. That's a "Mom Stick", right there.

https://en.wikipedia...wiki/Psychic_driving

All those "learn while you sleep" deals use the gimjmick above.

Other Mom Sticks include:

  • life insurance for infants, purchased after being convinced by a sales agent that it's an investment, and their kid will probably never be able to go to college unless they purchase a policy now, that they can borrow against later.
  • Encyclopedia sets, purchased for newborns that can't even read yet, that end up outdated before the kid hits middle school. (not so much these days, but historically speaking, before the internet age and Wikipedia, new parents were Encyclopedia Britannica's biggest customers, worth over $2000 in purchases, each)
  • "Miracle" blankets that cost $40+ each and don't do anything a $10 3-pack of receiving blankets can't do.
  • Baby wipe warmers (your child will not be psychologically scarred for life if you clean their bottom with a room temperature wipe)
  • Cheap piece of polyurethane foam for $45
  • Infant swimming classes (your infant can still drown in a few inches of water, even if you sign them up for all the infant swimming classes in the world)

Oh FFS! ...The icon for their "All New" MS Edge browser, is a $^%#& Blue 'E'!!?! Seriously??!!??

You have to understand what decades of a blue E has done to the minds of the simple users, the ones that the rest of us wonder how they ever managed to turn a computer on. To them, the blue E means the internet. That's all they know and understand. They won't be able to handle a change to another symbol. They would get lost and never be able to figure out where the internet is. They will flood ISP tech support hotlines asking where the internet went and how to get it back. As long as there is a blue E in sight, they will understand and click it, and life for them will transition to Win10 much easier.

Unless of course you would like to personally handle all their "missing internet" complaints?  :tellme:

I was going to ask why so may seem to be in panic mode, when we have an entire year to upgrade, and the clock hasn't even started ticking, yet. But then I think you answered it:

I am an IT security professional with a degree, dang it! I will not be out-smarted by a software upgrade offer!!! ;)

Yup, I get it...can't let the machines win, even if you aren't an IT security professional with a degree.

It's been awhile since I had that human vs. machine control freak part of me really kick in, so I kind of forgot about that whole battle that causes some of us to stop eating, lose sleep, and completely lose our minds, until we win.  :D

Thanks for reminding me.

And now someone comes forward with this useful info site: http://helb.github.i...goodbye-sourceforge/

Which, among other things, includes this advice:

How can I help?

If you agree that SourceForge is in fact distributing malicious software under the guise of open source projects, report them to google. Ideally this will help remove them from search results, prevent others from suffering their malware and provide them with incentive to change their behavior.

Leaked E-mail Between Jeb Bush and his Graphic Designer

After teasing us for months, Jeb Bush finally blew his load and announced that he’s running for president in 2016. Along with this campaign announcement came a brand-new logo reveal:

jeb-bush-logo-tweet[1].png

Whaaao.

We had an intern hack Jeb’s Android and found the e-mail correspondence between him and the logo’s graphic designer:

I could probably mange a few of those - but (as a beginner) it would be hard to exactly predict the ensuing medical condition :D
(Were you able to make a few suggestions?)

I sent him a whole list, at the top of which were blink, marquee, frameset, frame, and font. ;)

Am I the only person in the world who just remembers all of his passwords, instead of trusting any service (be it online or offline) to store it?
-Stephen66515 (June 16, 2015, 01:46 PM)

If you had nearly 400 different passwords, most of which look like they were randomly generated, not all of which belong to you, do you think you could remember them all, along with other important information, like which email address was used? What about important (and often confidential) client info necessary to do your job(s)?

If all I had was a handful of simple passwords of my own to remember, it might be possible, but since I don't, I need somewhere to store them.
392
You could try KeePass, and require both a password AND a keyfile to access your database. You would store your keyfile on a small capacity USB flash drive, so that it could work similar to a Yubikey.

This could also allow you to more safely store a backup of your database on a cloud storage service, such as dropbox, as long as you don't also store a copy of your keyfile there.

Backing up your keyfile would be best done by using multiple flash drives, storing your backups locked away some place safe. (good use for some of those cheap small capacity flash drives that are not useful for much else, often given away as promotional items)

As long as a copy of the keyfile is not stored on the same system as the application or the database, you should be ok.

Another is eType http://www.etype.com/ but I am unable to download it even with a proxy.

I tried seeing if I could download the installer from one of the many download sites, and Softonic showed me this lovely warning when I attempted to download it from them:

But if you really want to try it, you can download it from here: http://etypewecomple...oftonic.com/download

One of the problems a predictive text app could pose for writing a thesis, is that if it is choosing the words and phrases from existing papers in your possession, it could inadvertently cause your thesis to trigger a positive result on a plagiarism checker. If you do use an app, you are going to have to be very careful and make sure you test the results, thoroughly.  :-\

We could have a sub-theme of coolest spam ever. I don't recall any now, but I've had a couple of beauties over the years.

I posted a recent spam support ticket I received: https://www.donation....msg382045#msg382045

At first I thought it was spam, but then I wasn't so sure, so just for fun, I replied with a detailed list. But since I have not heard anything back from them, I am back to assuming it was spam.

Just been reading (and now can't find the link) something about Minecraft coming free with Windows 10 - Anybody else heard this?

I have only heard rumors of mines coming with it.  :P

Also, I am anxious to see how Cortana, the Personal Digital Assistant, will work. If it works like I fear, I will also like to know if it can be killed and buried. Otherwise I may have to learn how to use Linux, Mac or whatever. I am scared of Cortana!

There are two kinds of people in the world.  Those who live in a hemisphere named after Amerigo Vespucci and those who don't.

And which hemisphere would that be? Northern, southern, eastern, or western?

It would probably look better with a different font, one that looks a bit bolder and clearer. I used Arial 21 bold in my example.

Place the text object over the original text and size the font how you like. Then add the magnifying glass clipart, sizing it to cover your text object. Then use the keyboard shortcut of Alt - to drop it below your text.

No, this is the kind of result I am looking for:

Magnifying-Glass-Old-l.jpg

This example is done with a clipart object of a magnifying glass, with a text overlay. It can only be used to "magnify" text.

You could easily accomplish the same effect in Screenshot Captor, if you had the right magnifying glass clipart.

Here is the same effect done in SC:

Screenshot - 5_29_2015 , 5_40_07 PM.png

You can get this clipart object from here: http://www.iconarchi...-soft/Look-icon.html

Put a copy in your MyClipart folder and it will be available to use the next time you run SC.

If you don't like how it looks with this one, you are free to find a better one to use, that will give you the effect you are going for.
