I am determined to finally learn how to use FARR effectively this year. I have downloaded 37 FARR Demo screencasts and I am going to put them on a DVD, and I have been using DVD Styler. It looks like it is going to work, but the thumbnails for each chapter (file) aren't very useful and I would rather have it copy the filenames and use them for the chapter links instead without too much work.

I should note I downloaded and converted them with VideoDownloadHelper using "smart filenames" so the filenames are descriptive of the content, for example: FARR Demo #2 - Basic Search, Scoring, and Launching.mp4.

Is anyone aware of any DVD menu program that will do this? DVD Styler is easy to use but I didn't see this option.

Does anyone have this still working? Even after doing phitsc's fix and verszipo's fix and deleting the FARRMilk plugin folder, I am still getting tahe options dialog popup with every keystroke. Is there some other conflict?

I mainly use my phone to make phone calls ... because, it's a phone.

My $0.02: if it's a phone, then it IS a phone, but if it's a "smartphone" I think it's not exactly a phone.

Not exactly a phone, is still a phone ... Especially when it just so happens to be called a phone, be it smart or otherwise. I don't care what else it does, I was at a phone store, to get a phone ... and that's what I'll be using it for, as that is what I went after in the first place. :)

Do I have a "Smart" phone? Yes. However the rest of its features only serve to allow people an ever increasing number of ways to annoy the shit out of me even when they are not physically present. Hence my two favorite features of the device are that it allows me to call people when I need to speak with them, and it has this delightful little button on the top that allows me to shut the son-of-a-bitch off.

...Yes, I am getting old and cantankerous.

 :D

Interesting, why not just get a plain old dumbphone then?

A Dell Streak might be an option for android ipod touch type.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll check it out.

The Dell Streak appears to have a phone in it, but at least no hard keyboard reducing the screen size, so I could just ignore the fact that it is phone capable.

However, the download page says Windows and Mac Betas will be available "Q1 2011"

They have corrected the download page to say "Q4 2011" now. Hey, it's (almost) a NANY 2012 project!

This was the last straw for me. I could not avoid buying Listary Pro after this generous unbundling of the Edit Text Anywhere feature. It was on my to-buy list for a long time. I have a million uses for Listary and a few for Edit Text Anywhere Text Edit Anywhere (the post title confused me) (for example Google+ which doesn't currently provide the ability to save drafts), and their integration with every program is amazing.

Alpha Four (smooth as silk DOS relational database with prompts that made sense)
PC Tools (great disk repair utility, one version of it even included a flat file database program)
DR DOS 5 and 6, and Novell DOS 7 (Introduced new features like disk compression, caching, and virtual drives that forced Microsoft to do the same with MS-DOS) Plus its version of fdisk did not require a subsequent format. Magic!
Turbo Pascal (version 2 or 3?) provided to me on a 5.25" diskette. A compiler that produced real executables and came with a built-in IDE that made writing compiled code as easy as writing interpreted code.

There was a full screen freeware text editor called "e" that loaded lightning fast because it was compiled to a .COM file, which back then that meant it was non-relocatable by the OS and therefore had less overhead. Your assignment now is to find a web search engine that will let you search for "e".

Fabrice Bellard's freeware LZEXE, circa 1989 - the first program I ever saw that could convert .EXE files to smaller .EXE files which unpacked in memory before running the same as before. End users were running this on programs even if the developer had not. Imagine how many apps (yes, that word was around in the DOS days) you could fit on a 720KB diskette! The UPX of its day, and possibly the first one. More about Fabrice Bellard on Wikipedia

Vern Buerg's LIST - a DOS file viewer of around the same era, I think. No more type filename.ext|more! The program also came with a command line tool FV.EXE to see the contents of archive files. Very handy! Oddly, he doesn't have a Wikipedia page. (Sadly, Vern Buerg passed away in 2009.)

More as I think of them.

I just take it as a joke.

Right, it seems like something the Journal of Irreproducible Results would do. (Sadly there is almost no online content, but the graph is nice.)

Sort of off topic, is there a good Android equivalent to an iPod Touch yet? (I'm not ready to give up my $15 a month NET10 plan yet)

Oddly enough, Google+ profiles have an Other Names field, but even though I have put daddydave there and made it world-viewable, you can't find me by that name (it suggests that I may have meant diddydave). "Plus" it doesn't seem to show up on the actual public profile either.

I should have waited for the crawler instead of trying it right away. You can search for daddydave and find me on Google+ now. (It still suggests diddydave though. :)) So I would suggest using the Other Names field if you want to be found by your forum name.

forgive me for saying so, but...   that would just be you!  :P

I knew I was setting you up for that when I asked, lol :)

That's an amazing deal.

EDIT I think I had this mixed up with Nuance PDF Converter. Still looks like a good deal, but different feature set I think.

Jaw drops...highly regarded third party equivalent to Adobe Acrobat for $9.95.  Have you or anyone dealt with wondershare before, I haven't heard of them, but maybe that's just me.

Thanks, Ath! I'll look into both options!

I want to run a virus scan any time a mass storage device is attached to one of my home computers. What I want is for the device to be locked down from being used until this virus scan completes. I currently am an avast user, is there any way to configure avast or any other program to do this?

I've had similar issues Wraith. Fortunately pretty much all of them are invited by a DC person, so if you look at their "people in common with you" or "following", you'll usually see another DC-er. But I agree it's not the ideal way to be able to figure out how to categorize people.

I can't test this properly because my computer is actually down so I am stuck with XP at the moment, but try something like:

Code: Text [Select]
  1. explorer.exe /root,shell:::{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

as a command node. This won't bring it as flyout menus though, just as a new explorer window (if it works).

Living Room / Re: 64 Bit OS - When to Switch ?
« Last post by daddydave on July 07, 2011, 07:38 PM »
Just make sure all your hardware (especially the motherboard) supports the 64-bit version of (I assume) Windows 7. Applications incompatibilities going from 32bit to 64bit are trivial compared to going to Windows XP to Vista. To me, the main reason to do this was to take advantage of 64-bit's recognition of more memory than 3MB.

Someday there will be a fake quote from Steve Ballmer saying 8GB is all the memory anyone will ever need, and people will laugh. :D

Still it would be nice to try Google+ and then form an opinion. Does anyone already have an account there?

Agreed, I'd liked to see if Google has learned from its own mistakes, and from Facebook's. And if it's really supposed to be like Facebook except that it's not Facebook (like the xkcd cartoon says, and that is exactly how I would explain it to people), everyone should gain the ability to sign up for it at the same time I would think.

If I want to watch these screencasts (and the ScreenshotCaptor and the FARR ones) in bunches, what would you suggest? Will you consider putting these on Youtube, that would be one way to allow it. Maybe I can watch these on (now-outlawed) Youtube channel on Roku (I have hope there will be an official one soon).

Never mind, I remember ewemoa's suggestion of DownloadHelper in this thread.

gasp.. i know it's heresy but I was thinking of tinkering with some mac programming, just for the fun of it.

Hmmmm....can an advanced alternative to Spotlight for iOS be "FARR" away?
