N.A.N.Y. 2017 / Re: NANY 2017: CheckList DC (Android checklist)
« Last post by BGM on October 03, 2016, 10:10 AM »
Mouser - I tried it and I like it.  Just what is useful - a simple checklist.  I have an Acer IconiaTab 100 - ancient, running Android 4.0.3 and it works fine.  I installed via the apk file because google play wants .99 cents.  This can be very useful and makes my tablet more useful.

Thanks for sharing!

General Software Discussion / Cortana for Windows 7
« Last post by BGM on July 26, 2016, 09:12 PM »
The idea of using my voice to tell my computer what to do has always intrigued me.

On Windows XP I found a program called "Responding Heads" - which could do a lot of things:  voice-to-text (dicatation), text-to-voice (talking), listen for commands, sendkeys, etc.  It had a little head on your screen whose face would move when it talked.  It also had an "activation phrase" which you could use to toggle whether it listens for commands or not.  Most of these kinds of programs only give you a key-command.

But it didn't work so well, even after you went through all the "training" to get it to recognize your voice better.
And it doesn't work on Windows 7.

However, I know there is DRAG-ON - but it's not free.
There's VoiceBot, too, by the makers of DisplayFusion.  It works pretty well, but there's no voice-switch for toggling listening mode, and there's no dictation function.

For Windows 10 there is Cortona.

So I'm wondering what is the best of these voice-applications for Windows 7?

I've found this one, called Braina, which claims to be like Cortona.  Has anyone tried it?  It even has a companion Android App to turn your Android into a microphone.
https://www.brainaso.../cortana-for-pc.html
https://play.google....om.brainasoft.braina

I've also found this, but have not tried it.

Anyone else with ideas here?

« Last post by BGM on June 18, 2016, 09:07 AM »
But, as a side-note, Ballistic isn't very Hi-dpi (actually, 125% in Windows 7) friendly, as my screenshot shows:
Ath, I've not figured out how to deal with different DPI, I'm sorry. I have to calculate the sizes for the controls manually.

Hi, all.  I did some extensive work on Ballistic.  Ballistic is now updated to version 1.2.

Now it does palindromes, semordlinaps and phonewords.  And it is 30% faster.  I've also added a half-dozen new lists.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Capture Window does not capture open menu
« Last post by BGM on May 20, 2016, 01:12 PM »
It was unchecked, so I checked it and accepted.
But... still no menu in the screenshot.

I even tried with another program's menu - Notepad++ and it didn't capture the menu on it, either.

Mouser,  that option is already unchecked.

I had to uncheck it because it caused the capture to take a really long time (it made black squares appear on the screen during the capture, too).

I'm using Windows 7 x64 with 24GB RAM and a ZOTAC GeForce GT 440 (2GB GPU) with multiple monitors.

No, the menu does not close when I push the hotkey.
Mouser, Yes, a full-screen capture captures the menu.
And a "grab selected region" captures the menu.

But grab "Active Window" does not.  Apparently, the menu is not part of the Active Window.

Ath - I don't see why I should need that - I open the menu and then I push the hotkey.  The menu is already open.

Besides that, delayed capture doesn't capture it either.

So I'm making screenshots of a program I wrote so I can create documentation.
I want to document the menu commands.

So, with my program open, I open the File menu and push shift+printscreen, which is my command for capturing the window.
I also like my mouse captured.

But the result is my program's window with the mouse and the File menu in the pressed state - but no menu!

The only thing I can do is to use a custom capture and then use repeat region afterward.

So I think that "Capture Window" should capture menus, too.

You can create the sendkey script in autohotkey on a separate computer and then compile it to an exe (because you can compile ahk scripts) file and deploy that.  Problem solved.

You know, all windows shortcuts can already be used to react to keyboard shortcuts.

Say you make a shortcut on your desktop to notepad.
Just open the file properties and go to "shortcut" and set the "shortcut key" by setting the cursor in it and pushing the hotkey you want for it.
Only problem is that if you forget that you set it there, it will be hard to figure out where it is!
I don't know if this works in a Surface.

If you want to do other things, I would suggest looking into Autohotkey.

Living Room / I need help shopping for mesh!
« Last post by BGM on March 29, 2016, 07:32 PM »
Hi, y'all!

Some time ago I posted here about a computer game called Fungus.

Well, now I'm trying to create a regular board game out of the idea.
Instead of "tetris-like" pieces I'm going to use tiles - you would roll the dice and get that many tiles to place on the board.
So I found these tiles which are around $10 for around 800 pieces - perfect!  They are only 8mm square (that's about 5/16" - just under 3/8"), so they won't take up too much space on the board.
I'm thinking of a 30x30 grid.

But here's where I need help.
When I lay out the pieces on the board, I need some sort of grid to hold the tiles in place so they don't slide - you know, kind of like on the super-scrabble boards - or in Blokkus.

The tiles are 8mm, so the holds need to be big enough so the tiles can be easily placed and removed by hand from the grid.

Here is a very nice brass mesh that would be perfect if it had the right size holes!  Here is a steel one, again the wrong size.  This one is copper, but it is woven, which would make it more difficult to handle the tiles.

I'm going to make the gameboard out of oak or walnut (and carve little mushrooms on the borders), so a brass grid would look lovely.  But if it was just steel then I could always spray-paint it gold or brass.

I just need help finding the grid!  I've googled for grid, mesh, screen.

Can you all help me find a mesh that will work?

[update]
Okay, so I found this, which has 10mm holes, but it's a bit thick.

You know, you can actually play Samarost1 and level 1 of Samarost2 for free in your browser.
Do it!  It's actually quite interesting.

There's this one too, which you can play in your browser.
And this Nike game.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Tray Contextmen appears offset
« Last post by BGM on February 02, 2016, 01:49 PM »
I have an idea what it could be.

I am using my taskbar vertically on the right side of the screen.  If I move the taskbar to the regular bottom location then the menu shows in the right place.  But when I move it back to my vertical position, the menu appears horizontally where it would if the taskbar were on the bottom.  So the menu has the y position of a bottom-most taskbar, but the x position of the right-side taskbar.

Weird.

Mouser - it's a weird problem.  I have not figured out how to fix it either; but its the only program that does this.  I'm thinking I might try a complete uninstall and reinstall with completely fresh settings?  That sounds like work to me, though.

« Last post by BGM on January 02, 2016, 11:37 PM »
I disabled alt+printscreen combo in ScreenshotCaptor and the problem went away.
It's funny though, because when it first happened I was really surprised - I had never used SC to capture a control before and I thought it was something produced by the script!  Then I saw the SC icon somewhere and got to thinking.
Funny!

This has been happening to me for a long time now.

When I right-click on the tray icon to show the tray menu, the menu appears about 300 pixels to the right of where it's supposed to appear.  I have a right-aligned taskbar.

Is there a way to fix this without resetting everything to default?

Screenshot Captor / Interaction with ScreenClippings AHK Script
« Last post by BGM on January 02, 2016, 09:46 AM »
Recently I found an AHK script called ScreenClippings.

It has a feature where you can capture a portion of the screen and it becomes a floating panel.
This is very useful if you need to use the area as a reference.  Sometimes I do this in certain dialogue windows and then I use the information somewhere else.

Also, I like being able to capture an area by this scripts hotkey: hold win key and draw with the mouse.  To me this is a much better way than pushing a hotkey and then drawing.  The ahk script allows me to draw the box immediately and not have to wait for the crosshair lines to appear.  I just draw the box and the image is captured - it's so fast.

Maybe ScreenshotCaptor could do these things too?

Also, a weird thing happens.  When I use the script to capture an area (by holding win+ctrl and drawing a box) then ScreenshotCaptor thinks I'm trying to capture a particular object (SC's hotkey is alt+printscreen), but I haven't pushed either alt or the printscreen key!  Weird!
