Even Google has spread out their "Fact-Sheets" to show multiple methods and all of them were much more difficult than just entering the correct mail-server, port numbers , encryption methods etc.

Since everything from Outlook 2007 on has been auto configure (statement assumes IMAP connection), why would you be trying to enter any of that stuff? Are you - or they - trying to get a Gmail account to POP/SMTP?? If they are then you would need to ensure that the target account had Access for Less Secure Apps enabled. We frequently have to enable this for people that want to do Scan-To-Email using a Gmail account.

Other than that I really don't recall having a problem with it ... Outside of a (origin unknown) reflexive tendency to discourage that sort of configuration. Outlook always seems "happier" (more stable/less bitchy) when it's only servicing one target. But it certainly can handle multiple targets just fine.

Does what you say mean that iPad users will no longer be able to listen to audio via headphones on newer iPads?

Yes, they're dropping the venerable 3.5mm stereo jack in favor of forcing people to go with the newer-fangled Bluetooth device$.

...I guess that's why they worked so hard to get it renamed - in people's minds - to the "iPhone Jack" ... So nobody would think to miss it anymore when they killed it off.

How does one tell which type (32 or 64-bit) one has? It's not mentioned in the "About" section.

Considering you have to dig through a layer of warnings against using the x64 version, to download the x64 version ...(if you don't remember the ruckus)... I'd be inclined to just assume it's x86.

Living Room / Re: Guide to Living with Introverts
« Last post by Stoic Joker on August 22, 2016, 11:28 AM »
Let me add a piece that I think is missing from this picture of introversion.  Speaking for myself I have found that "unstructured" socialization can be extremely painful -- things like just sitting around at a dinner party talking to one another about random things.  Whereas structured social activities (board games) are quite fun.  I don't know if that's true for all introverts, so your mileage may vary.

That works for me. If there is a purpose to an interaction, I'm fine ... But trying to  engage in casual conversation (e.g. "Small Talk") I completely short circuit.

Same here.  I didn't even realize what the problem was until my wife pointed it out.  I can't make small talk.  I've tried, but as Stoic said, I completely short circuit.

IRL I'm a quiet, stoic, man-of-few-words...and the one question that is most likely to piss me off almost instantly is 'Why don't you smile'. I'm quite happy in my "Little Ball" and if one tries to pry me out of it (e.g. a high energy pest) Shit. Will. Hit. The. Fan... ;) :D

No. I hadn't. I had thought that was what archive compression tools were for. Maybe I was mistuken.
I had not wanted lossy compression.

Understandable, but what's being lost in the optimization process, is both adjustable, and in the default settings virtually imperceivable. But I'm guessing there is a great deal of cruft in the PDF format. Part of which is the boiler plate header trash that froths on about how cool Adobe is, and the rest is duplicitous formatting and object description code.

The example that sold me on the program was a 35Mb (in house created) sales brochure that one of the staff was trying to stuff through our mail server. I ran it through NX and it gave me a 3Mb file that looked (and printed) identically to the bloated original.

I bought the program immediately thereafter.
388
^^That may well be the case, but it's only PDF files that I want to zip up!

Have you considered optimizing them first? I've gotten exceptional results using NXPowerLite on PDF's to reduce their size by upwards of 70% without appreciable quality loss. After that kind of treatment it shouldn't matter much what you zip them with.

Excellent timing! It's just what I needed to drive a nail through a "discussion" that's been plaguing me for weeks.

Thank you!

I have updated the forum code so signature (and similar linkable fields) will not be displayed until a member has been registered for 3 or more days.
The only downside is that it may make it harder to spot spammers.

Can you log the qualifying events somewhere (Email?) to draw attention to them?

Robert Marshall?  "Look what a beautiful mechanism that is. It's obviously designed to do what it does. It must have been made that way."

Nice, but no.

The thrust of the quote was that the mechanism's beauty was by virtue of the efficiency of its function.

Another rough-ish guess at what it's supposed to be (something like): If the a machine is designed to do something extremely well, and does, it is by it nature beautiful

Nope, none of those. it was something along the lines of if a mechanism was designed to work well it would subsequently be beautiful.

I do like this one, but it's not the one I'm looking for.

"When I am working on a problem I never think about beauty. I only think about how to solve the problem. But when I have finished, if the solution is not beautiful, I know it is wrong." - Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983)

I like the screen in Vopt and others where you can see all the little squares changing in colour as the defragging proceeds. I find it quite restful - almost hypnotic.

Anything graphical will tend to slow down the process activity it's depicting ... But yeah, I totally get where you're coming from. :D

Living Room / Trying to remember quote about design and beauty
« Last post by Stoic Joker on August 12, 2016, 07:08 AM »
There was a "famous" quote mentioned here once (years ago) that was something to the effect that a machine that was designed to work well/efficiently would therefore be beautiful. It was a much more eloquent way of stating - my favorite "rule" - Form Follows Function ... But I can't for the life of me remember what it was.

Any Ideas what it might be/have been??

TIA

The creator died and he made clear in his last will and testament that this software should become freeware after he died.

Wow! That's totally beyond cool.

For simplicities sake - especially for a one off project - I'll vote for pencil and paper. But then again I generally work from a picture in my head and write down almost nothing except for hard (environmental constraint) measurements that can't be deviated from.

I've yet to see a UI that can keep up with what's going on in my head. *Shrug*

I've heard of some schools offering a deal along with computer-related majors of a free account to Microsoft's TechNet Subscription, which includes free licenses for every available version of Windows that could be installed on 10 different machines. (But that was probably close to 10 years ago when I heard about it, so things have probably changed.)

TechNet is gone, but there are still MSDN subscription (in the $500 range) that include Multi Activation Keys. They are only for internal use - legally... - However...

Oh Yeah... After going through the usual turn-off-the-nosey-bits part of the install. Cortana seems just as off as it has always been in previous versions ... So I really don't quite get what all the hub-bub is about.

Cortana is removed (e.g. is removable) from the TaskBar - I hit the Windows key, type what want, get what I want, and go on with my day.

So, on he plus side...the anniversary edition upgrade is blazingly fast. And I say this because it only took 30 minutes to do on the - i5-4440 with a mech drive - test machine I've been fighting with.

Originally it had decided to auto load the 'Home" edition of 10 (instead of asking me...), which forced me to do an internal (enter new key...) upgrade of it to the proper Pro edition I needed to get it on a domain. And this is the part that apparently previously went horribly - Horribly... - wrong. Because while it said it had completed successfully...it hadn't...not even close ... Which appears in retrospect to be why it was being such a - completely impossible - pain in the ass to log into.

Everything is back where it belongs after the 1511 pro to Anniversary Pro upgrade.

Backdoors are one (separate issue) thing, nailing my (Admin) side door shut OTOH is flat-out infuriating beyond words.

I flattened it, and went with the older 1511 build to get it to act right. Now I gotta "upgrade" it back to the WTF (Adversary) build and see what happens. Jesus Christ, I ain't got time for this silly shit.
