General Software Discussion / Re: Collectorz.com Book Collector 6
« Last post by TucknDar on December 11, 2008, 02:40 PM »
By the way, I was thinking of a suggestion to Collectorz. Since they're more or less abandoning v5.x of BoC and MoC, it would be interesting challenging them with this: Sell these "dead" pieces of software at 50% or even better $10 with ONE YEAR LIMITED SUPPORT and see how sales compare to the current version, 6.x.

I think it is totally mad in this day and age to try and reinvent the book catalogue from user input.
I don't think that's what they're doing though. At least it's not possible to add books to the database, like it is in Movie Collector, although... (see end of next reply)

Even if they don't want to provide multiple lookups in the application surely it makes sense for the online catalogue to have a backend that can automatically search dozens of sources.
They do this, actually. If I'm understanding it right, when a user searches ISBN through BoC, if it isn't found in Collectorz database it'll look for it in other sources. I found a book in the Norwegian national library this way. Also, when a user has searched this way (like I have), the result will be available in the database when the next user searches for the same ISBN. So, I suppose that's some user input that is used after all...

the single database version of the software will be just about useless.
Long live Book and Movie Collector 5.x :)

Found Deals and Discounts / EditPad Pro discounted at Bits du Jour on December 18

Like the topic title says, the EditPad Pro editor is available at a discount (61%: you pay just below $20) on December 18.

EditPad Pro
A Powerful, Flexible, and Convenient Text Editor (And Word Processor)

I've only just downloaded the free trial, but a simple search here at DC reveals several positive reviews and remarks about this editor. So question is: Should I? :-[

Yes, the software will certainly work better for US customers, although I've seen someone claiming that Collectorz were now aiming at the European market  At least Book Collector 6 search is somewhat useable (since it uses other sources when it can't find a book in Collectorz database), whereas Movie Collector 6 search is pretty much useless for my purchases, except when I buy non-Norwegian editions.

As far as I know you can't use a v6 license for v5. If the program doesn't do the job, you should probably ask for a refund. Many things can and have been said about Collectorz.com, but they're pretty quick giving refunds to unhappy customers.

I too think the v5 was far better than the current version, especially since I could actually search the Norwegian National Library, which was very useful for me! The decision to drop pre-ISBN books in their database is pretty aweful, although at least they're not closing the door on a solution. I'll be very surprised if they really succeed with their new BoC and MoC strategy. At least I have lifetime licenses for both as well as for Music Collector... :-[

Mybe they have actually been asked by amazon etc. to cease and desist!
I doubt it, as that would have certainly given them reason to stop using other sources, and a valid reason at that.

Of course a big part of the problem is also Alwin himself. Not only doesn’t he mince words - which doesn’t bother me at all - but he can also get pretty abrasive to users in his forum. Personality trait, I guess. That never helps in situations like this!
Wouldn't bother me if it weren't for the fact that he's the president of the company.

Should add that several of their employees are both responsive, quick to provide good support and seem genuinely interested in providing service to their customers.

Some major edits since trying to be more reasonable about disagreements.

Actually, for Movie Collector, they didn't announce it. They started a thread requesting feedback, and almost all the feedback was negative, yet they still decided they'd change.

The database is obviously improving, but it's still lightyears away from IMDB in terms of included movies. Also my main complaint with this isn't so much the move to single source as it's the feeling that current customers don't matter as much as new, potential customers. I also don't see what would be so difficult with having the Collectorz database as default and letting "advanced users" choose IMDB, Amazon, etc...

One more strange and unpopular decision by this company. There have been issues before, mainly concerning their changed upgrade policy.
See here: https://www.donation...23.msg59808#msg59808
and here: https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=8807.0

This time they're announcing version 6 of their Movie Collector software. So? Well, the main change is that they're gonna stop using multiple sources to search from when adding/updating movies in your collection, and only use their own database. The reason why I'm posting this complaint, is that they don't want to listen to the so-called "vocal minority" and instead only focus on getting trial users to purchase a license. They've already changed the behaviour of Book Collector, even with several complaints.

I suppose they're at least somewhat honest about their intentions.

Too bad their products are the best of the bunch (at least before v6 of Book and Movie Collector), or I'd switch in an instant. Please recommend other collection apps that can search multiple sources, and that listens to the "vocal minority".

The Getting Organized Experiment of 2007 / Re: New Getting Organized Experiment?
« Last post by TucknDar on November 23, 2008, 10:30 AM »
Does someone want to volunteer to be the the supervisor of whatever "Getting Organized 2009" entails?
I've been thinking about this a bit, and although I don't really have the time now, I'll consider if I could do this supervisoring without getting more mess that needs cleaning up, so to speak. After December 16 I have more spare time so I'll be able to spend some more time on GOE09 then. The DC community has given me a lot, so I'd love to be able to give a little something back, although I won't make promises...

If there are more ideas out there, then please post, and maybe we'll figure something out together :)

Edit: guess I didn't find the time :( Hope this is the year that I'll find a working system...

« Last post by TucknDar on November 16, 2008, 01:14 PM »
For this specific feature (autotext) I have to agree that I can't see how AHK is more powerful than PE, although it's obviously more powerful in the sense that it can do a whole lot more, but that's just because it's a completely different type of application.

I can highly recommend PhraseExpress (which is free for personal use). Very easy to use and very powerful for autotext stuff. Just wish there was a linux version too :/

That would be a very nice feature! Would make LBC even better, since I could have an autohiding bar with a lot of similar things (search definitions, spelling, etc.)

I think this is a great app! Along with FARR it's the way that I launch pretty much all my apps. So keep up the good work :)

And I agree with lanux128, sub-menus should inherit opaque level.

By the way, do anyone have any skins to share?

Doesn't matter too much if you go far enough north, though. No sun at all during winter and the sun "refuses" to go down set all through summer :p

edited to avoid the obious pun  :o

Personally I use Chameleon to manage my startup apps, but I don't know if it takes commandline input. If it does, or if another startup manager does, then at least you could make a FARR alias to switch between different startup groups.

But for the initial request, sounds like a startup manager is the most appropriate tool.

I've been using LiteStep since as long as I can remember, without any major problems. Maybe there's been a couple of occasions where some app seems to have relied on explorer being set as shell, but apart from that (which I don't even remember the details of) no problems.
