Too busy dabbing with various Linux distros and now, with a Google Nexus 7!

You're installing Linux distros on your Nexus 7? O_o

Which ones?

New version of the game released. It doesn't really differ from that test build I made earlier, but now it's the official build so you can upgrade and beat your high scores and stuff.

Goal$36,00 ($1,600 as of this posting)
End Date2014-03-07
Project Creator(s)Tyrone Henrie
ExcerptExplore a whimsical Nintendo 64 era world and discover its darkest secrets

Catapult for Hire is an action-adventure RPG where exploration and puzzle solving are done with your skillful and creative use of catapults.

No job is too big or too small, in this game you do it all. One moment you will be solving huge Zelda-like temples and in the next you are helping a gigantic lazy ogre complete his chores.

Earn gold, find and unlock new catapults, fight epic bosses, craft new payloads, heck you can even go fishing.

The story is a satirical look at modern issues in a medieval setting. You play an out of work knight during an economic meltdown who turns to freelance catapultry to make ends meet. Even in a whimsical world, life can be harsh. Experience triumphant victories and crushing failures. As you progress you find there are bigger powers at play and that your adventures have found you uniquely equipped to take them on.

@chrisk - Could you provide fuller hardware specs for that netbook?

I know we've got 2Gb of RAM.

What about Make, CPU type and speed, HD size, native screen resolution, info about the graphics and sound subsystems, etc.?

Knowing that would make alternative OS recommendations easier.  :)

Got any recommendations for me?

I have a netbook (MSI Wind U120-024US) that is painful to use even though the OS is XP. RAM maxes out at 1 GB. It's awful.

Maybe I'll install Mint on it and then use SplashTop to remotely control my more powerful desktop Windows 7 rig.

DC Gamer Club / Dillo Hills 2: 'Roid Racing
« Last post by Deozaan on February 07, 2014, 01:46 AM »
I have no idea what a 'roid is. But Dillo Hills 2 is a fun racing game with a simple premise: Press down while going downhill to gain speed. Let go while going uphill to retain speed and fly into the air. Collect crystals to get powerups and items to fire at the other racers (Mario Kart style).

It's a great free, cross-platform flash game (also available on Android and iOS) that supports up to 8 players simultaneously (I repeat: cross-platform!).

Use my Friend ID when you sign up to add me to your friends list: 166764
(Strangely, it doesn't automatically add you back on MY friends list, so be sure to post here with your racer name so I can add you to my list as well.)

Play here in your browser (plus links to get it for Android or iOS): http://www.doyoudillo.com/

More info here: http://dillohills.com/

Full disclosure: I'm in no way affiliated with Dillo Hills 2, but if you use my friend ID when you sign up, I do get an in-game referral token which can be redeemed for in-game goodies.

I've had this option set for so many years that I forgot it wasn't like that by default. In fact, every single Windows 7 computer (including everybody else's computers) I've used has the smaller taskbar, so I'm still not sure I believe that it's not small by default.

I increased the max bullet count by 2 and tripled the rotation speed and now the game feels a lot more fast paced and exciting.

I like it a lot this way, I feel like I've got a chance, but more importantly it's also more fun en route

I like it a lot, too. Thanks for "pushing" me on this (I don't really feel pushed, but I'm not sure how else to describe it). I've had other people tell me they thought the turret should rotate faster, or that there should be more bullets, but I flat out refused because I didn't want to make it too easy. But now that I've actually tried it, I find it is a much more enjoyable game.

Sorry to anyone who suggested similar changes in the past and I rejected your suggestion!

It will stop rotating when it is pointing in the direction of your mouse cursor. Pixel perfect precision right there. (c:
funny, I actually find it much more accurate than formerly, probably because it's quicker, I dont feel I have to keep rotating the mouse to get it there :D

What I've found I like is that if there's a ninja asteroid coming at you really fast from the opposite direction you're facing, it's a lot easier to blast it at the last split-second before it destroys you. It makes me feel a lot more "lucky" but also a lot more skilled when I manage to blast 2-3 small asteroids all coming from different directions just before they hit me. I like it a lot. :)

I'm still playing it online via your site . have been meaning to download :-[ actually I'll do that today this week.
But either online or standalone would be fine if you want to do that with the different builds.

OK, I got a webplayer build up for you with some changes to test:

Old link removed

I increased the max bullet count by 2 and tripled the rotation speed and now the game feels a lot more fast paced and exciting. I actually like it this way, but I'm wondering if I've made it too easy. On my first (and only) try with these changes, I made it to level 16 and got 490,679 points.

Screenshot - 14-02-05, 03-13-18.jpg

Have made it to 34k now, not sure what level that was though.

Check your high score table and it will tell you what level you made it to. :)

If it rotated a *lot* faster though, I think it would be harder to be exact with where you're stopping to shoot.

It will stop rotating when it is pointing in the direction of your mouse cursor. Pixel perfect precision right there. :)

I'm not sure it's worth it.

Which platform are you playing the game on? Standalone client for PC? Or the web version? Android? I'll make you some builds with different settings (more bullets, faster rotation, slower asteroids, etc.) so you can test.

I think you're right that it should probably start out easier. It does automatically get more difficult just as you progress with more asteroids on the screen at once. There's a critical limit at about level 15 where it gets really hard to survive just the initial wave of new asteroids being spawned.

I just heard about SplashTop. I haven't used it myself, but from what I've heard, it's very fast (unlike TeamViewer, which takes forever sometimes to update the screen).

It might be worth looking into.
FWIW I never found TeamViewer to take forever to do anything. It's as light or lighter than any other RD tool I've ever used. But I guess it really all depends on the the quality and speed of the network connection so YMMV.

I exaggerated a bit when I said it takes forever. But I have experienced it taking several seconds to update the screen when there were large changes, such as opening or minimizing a window.

I tried SplashTop on my PC from my Tablet (Tablet to PC connection) and it works pretty well over WiFi. I think you have to pay if you want to use it over the internet. But I would agree that it seems to run a lot more smoothly than TeamViewer does. I like it.

It only took me about 30 minutes to sync, and it started at "3 days behind". The forum thread said it takes forever if you're not using an SSD, so I made sure to put the program on my SSD.

And here's the opposite opinion: http://sealedabstrac...-the-games-industry/

The entire article's credibility is destroyed in the first two paragraphs (emphasis mine):

See, in the in-app purchase model actually predates phones. It predates video game consoles. It goes all the way back to the arcade, where millions of consumers were happy to pay a whole quarter ($0.89 in 2013 dollars) to pay for just a few minutes. The entire video games industry comes from this model. Kids these days.

But in fact, the model predates computers. I can trace it at least as far back as the Periscope mechanical arcade game from Sega in 1966 that offers to sell you ten lives for 25 cents ($1.80 in 2013 dollars).

So which is it? Or am I just old fashioned and a quarter was changed to 12.5 cents in the past couple of decades?

And at market rates, I made almost $300 today for playing a silly game! :P

$300 USD? Can you actually trade it for cash, or is that just a theoretical exchange rate?

It's a fun and interesting puzzle game. I bought it back when it was originally made for an Indie Buskers 48-hour game jam. But it has had more work put into it since the game jam and looks much nicer now. I'd recommend it.

I had just downloaded Dungeon Keeper to my tablet Saturday, played it a bit, and then a bit more Sunday. Having been a big fan of Dungeon Keeper 2 (I never played the original), I was so frustrated with the in-app purchases (IAP) that I left the game a one-star review and recommended people pick up the original games on GOG.com for a few bucks.

Almost immediately after I'd left my review, I saw a link to this article on Twitter. I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates this kind of IAP gouging with a passion.

Another great article on the subject (mentioned at the bottom of that one) is:

Optimizing Your Industry to the Point of Suicide

My new review for EA games and others that engage in these awful practices:

Free-to rate (1 star)
1 star: free
2 stars: $9.99
3 stars: $18.99 (most popular!)
4 stars: $27.99
5 stars: $34.99 (best deal!)

TeamViewer is great for me. I've been using it to remote to my own PC from my phone/tablet for a couple of years now. It's never let me down. And free for personal use.

I like it well enough that I'd probably even pay for it... if the cheapest plan wasn't $750. But I guess with prices like that, they're probably making enough money from sales to support people like me for free.
