this sounda a lot like the dim-all-windows-but-foreground-window request..
i think this is sounds increasingly like a fun feature that people are interested in.

i'll leave this thread separate for a while and then i think merge it with the dim-windows thread, as i think they are highly related.

i wonder if people can think of other uses for this program..
i'm afraid it has some serious spamming applications :(

but maybe there are more productive uses as well?

Unfinished Requests / Re: IDEA: Text Editor just for text (stay with me)
« Last post by mouser on May 21, 2005, 05:37 AM »
surely there are some freeware text editors that fulfil these requirements.
basically you are just asking for features to be removed from the existing text editors we reviewed.. or am i missing something deeper?

Unfinished Requests / Re: Minimize to Tray Control
« Last post by mouser on May 20, 2005, 09:12 PM »
my understanding is that apps like this which can be told to always minimize/hide/keepontop windows, do so by matching against windows titles or sometimes windows class names.  maybe the reason someo of your windows arent being minimized on restart is because something is changing about them, like their titlebar.. perhaps a minimizer tool which has other options for detecting the window would do it.

the solution is surely a better minimizer utility; i'll bet someone here will be able to suggest one (freeware please)..

i was in the bookstore today and browsed through
C++ Primer 4th edition by Lippman et al.

http://www.amazon.co.../detail/-/0201721481

It seemed to my eyes to be a great book for learning c++,
much more inviting than the deitel book, at least at first glance.

i agree, windows installer has to be the most evil piece of software ever invented... and the fact that it was totally unnesc. and never should have been built in the first place is just poison icing on the poison cake.

"System Path Commander" has now been added to the Coding Snacks Download Page:
https://www.donation...dingSnacks/index.php

you will find a screenshot and a readme there as well.

This program was far beyond the original request, and went beyond what i had hoped even.  It's a fantastic tool for power users who want to modify their system path.  one of my favorite snacks so far.  It's not going to be of use to everyone, but those who mess with their system path will love it.

Living Room / Coding snacks ideas needed!
« Last post by mouser on May 20, 2005, 10:23 AM »
we're having another coding snacks weekend now (5/22/05),
and we need some new ideas, so get over to the coding snacks section and try to think of some ideas for programs that would be useful or fun, and small.

and if you know of another forum that might have people who would like to make suggestions, please let them know.. it always helps to have new people making suggestions!

on this page (on far right marked as attachments) you will see the sdk documentation, and a sample plugin
and then in the center of the page a link to a more substantial demo plugin, MyMacros, with source):

hold the phones..

damn jibz has already whipped up a working example of my request..
so you can blame him and his ability to reuse code he has already written for new tasks.

jibz has said it was too easy for him to win a prize, so i guess we still have 2 copies of thebat to give away for plugins.

maybe jibz can give you guys some hints about compiling and using the sample thebat plugin..

so i guess the scenario is we are looking for 2 new ideas for plugins..
and 2 coders to write them..

thanks edvard, that's a good description and some useul links.
i guess im one of those traditionalists that likes my windows to look like win2k (the first thing i did after installing win xp is turn off all the horrible looking xp stuff), but i'm still curious about these shells.

I got an email from somone who wondered if writing and submitting a coding snacks program meant that the program became the property of DonationCoder.com.

No.  Any code you write is absolutely your software, in every sense of the word.

We don't want any rights to it, you can put it anywhere you want, sell it, discontinue it, etc.

We will host it for you on the CodingSnacks download page, and if you want to write a separate html page for the app, we'd be happy to host that too, but the program is entirely yours to do with as you wish.

And if you want to set up a donation account at paypal or amazon we'd also be happy to list the donation button next to the program on the coding snacks page, etc.

You are encouraged to submit an announcement of your program to freeware sites, and we are happy to host the download bandwidth and be the official download site for the program.

Our view is that the more useful content we have on the site, the more useful the site is to people, which is what we are trying to achieve.  And if we can do anything to help make the site a good experience for you we will try.

I think we may try to do more of this in the future..

RIT Labs has given us 2 free copies of TheBat! Pro to give out as prizes for some coding snack thing related to TheBat!

I would like to give these to the first two people who write a plugin/addon for thebat, whether it happens this week or whenever.

I am open to different ideas, if you have a strong idea, but I have had an idea for a freeware program that i would like to interface with TheBat, and I think that it would be great if someone made a nice addon/plugin that was really made as a helper for other people to write programs that interface with TheBat!.  So, I would like to suggest that one of the plugins be set up so that from the macro you can specify an exe filename, and some optional named options, and the plugin would invoke the exe, and "capture" its output, either by capturing stdout, or just reading the results from some specified output file.  I can help clarify this on request.  The basic idea is that this would be a macro plugin that could be used to run an arbitrary commandline tool, passing it options and grabbing its output.  There are some existing addons/plugins already written for thebat, and they may be able to be adapted to do this quite easily.

the blog looks great, going to sit down with a beer and give it a read.

regarding ms, i am slowly turning into one of those MS haters, despite my struggle against it.

It's not that i don't recognize the great stuff
they've done, but i've grown increasingly intolerant of the horrible
stuff they've unleashed.  For example i don't know if you've
experienced any of the evilness that is the Microsoft Windows
Installer, a totally unnesc. thing that never needed to be written,
and can cause some truely f*cked up behavior, like programs trying to
"fix" themselves and rolling back installs, and generall causing
unfixable havok based on whimsy.  I use MS Word for academic writing
quite a bit and it never ceases to amaze me how insane it can be about
reformating paragraphs based on neighboring formating.  ie headers of
one type merge into another, etc.  Each version comes out with more
insane features (like changing menus), while these fundamental things
don't get fixed.  Its stuff like that, and some of the decisions they
make (wordperfect has a "show hidden codes" option that lets you see
the secret formatting codes that can help you figure out whats going
on; naturally ms has no interest in helping you to see this).

I installed MS XP sp2 and it broken my MS Visual c++ compiler.  the
error message: "internal error".

in fact, it blows my mind the the most likely probablems i encounter
on my computer are inevitably due to ms products interfering with each
other in this way...

i spent about 6 or 7 hours over two days when testing ftp servers, trying to figure out why
for some reason, i could no longer generate server ssl certificate.  no matter what program i tried to use, the build int ftp server certificate generating programs, or microsoft's ssl self-signing certificate utility, they all simply refused to run, exiting with a meaingless message.

i finally stumbled on a newsgroup post that suggested the problem might be caused by not having correct folder permission on some deep folder, and in fact that was the problem. it's things like this, not reporting a useful error, that kills me the most.  it's not that i mind so much that something has gone wrong, but at least least tell me enough to know wtf it is i should try to fix.

MS pull this shit consistently.  why do i need  to hire a team of professionals to figure out how to disable a word addin?  why are such addins scattered in various places and each have their own technique for disabling?

i recently wrote a program on this site to change the default browser.
you don't want to know how many semi-redudant, conflicting, insane registry settings their are that all effect default browser.

it is enough to drive you mad.

personally i know there is no god, because if there was, he would come down and make us start the computer revolution over again.

here's a good search to find 2xl stuff on ebay:

 ("2xl","2-xl") (robot,toy,8track,"8-track")

that will find most all 2xl related auctions.
