If the law is an ass, it's because an ass is frequently The Law.

Evey so often nine asses are gathered together to form an 'asinine' - or Supreme Court.

(Can't remember where I first saw the above.)

That's really right.

I had a judge tell me that "While I was in his court, the law was what he said it was.  If I wanted to argue the law, I should have brought a lawyer."

And the lawyer that had told me not to take him to court said, that's how it works.  But if I'd brought a lawyer, just that fact would have been prejudicial.

The words, Rock and Hard Place came to mind.  And he totally agreed.

It's depressing when you think about it.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Creating Aliases With Optional Parameters
« Last post by wraith808 on August 06, 2015, 09:03 AM »
quick response first: perhaps the easiest solution would be to create 2 aliases, one for when you have both parameters and one for if you have only one.
there are probably other solutions using regex, though i dont know off hand of a way to have a default parameter.. it's an interesting idea for a feature to add to the alias system..

That's what I thought the answer would be after playing with it a bit.  Thanks for the reply.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Creating Aliases With Optional Parameters
« Last post by wraith808 on August 05, 2015, 03:33 PM »
So, I've just gotten into creating aliases, and I don't know how I didn't do this before!  But I want to create an alias with optional parameters, and regex is not working for me.

The program (QuickNote for OneNote - note.exe) allows you to feed in the note text, a switch for displaying the note, and a switch for the category.  I want the switch for the category to be optional.

The RegEx

^QuickNote (.*),(.*)?

The commands:

QuickNote - $$1 | C:\Users\wraith808\My Files\Dropbox\Tools\QuickNote\Note.exe $$1 /sect $$2
QuickNote and Display - $$1 | C:\Users\wraith808\My Files\Dropbox\Tools\QuickNote\Note.exe $$1 /disp /sect $$2

It works... but you have to put a , at the end (I tried making the , optional, but that made it match the whole string, instead of splitting it).  I can live with that, even though it's suboptimal.

Is there a way to make it, however, so that if the second param is empty, it uses a default for that second parameter?  Or to check if that second parameter is set, and change behavior based on that?

Doesn't accessing DC using https disable YT displaying, because it's connecting with http ? (AFAIR)

It has to do with the link the yt is posted under, not the link you're connecting through DC with (AFAIK)

The funny thing about the software- it includes opencandy!  I wouldn't use any software from an independent programmer that did such things unless it was open source.  I want to know *what* they changed... not just that they changed it.  And it's wonky in detecting the settings originally.

Someone's taking advantage of the FUD, it seems.

If you're going to use something like this... I'd more trust https://github.com/W...K/Debloat-Windows-10

Also installed query monitor plugin to see what it sees

the slow query is

SELECT post_id, meta_key, meta_value
FROM wp_postmeta
WHERE post_id IN

update_meta_cache() calls it, I wonder if I can prevent it from running....

It's something to do with your database.  Not sure what it is, but that's in *every* installation of wordpress by default.  So, if it was a problem because of the number of posts, there would be more hue and cry about it.

Check the indices on that table, and repair them- especially if they are on post_id.  You might also try to run mysqlcheck on all of the tables, i.e.

mysqlcheck -u root -p --check --all-databases

or...

mysqlcheck -u root -p --auto-repair --check --all-databases

if you're going to trust it to check.  Or you can just run the auto-repair after the check.

I don't see anything obvious, other than the lag.

Three more troubleshooting steps I could suggest:

1. Run the posts query to see how long it's taking.  That's all that is in the edit.php- it did a query, then formatted it with the options, i.e. select * from wp_posts where post_type = "page"
2. Create a plugin script, and try to replicate what the php script is doing in creating the posts by query, i.e.
$querystr = "SELECT * FROM $wpdb->posts as wpost ORDER BY wpost.post_date DESC";
$pageposts = $wpdb->get_results($querystr, OBJECT);
3. Then in your plugin, change it so that it's getting them by using the wp_query engine, i.e.
<?php $args = array(
   'sort_order' => 'asc',
   'sort_column' => 'post_title',
   'hierarchical' => 1,
   'exclude' => '',
   'include' => '',
   'meta_key' => '',
   'meta_value' => '',
   'authors' => '',
   'child_of' => 0,
   'parent' => -1,
   'exclude_tree' => '',
   'number' => '',
   'offset' => 0,
   'post_type' => 'page',
   'post_status' => 'publish'
);
$pages = get_pages($args);
?>
4. Last, create the site from scratch, do the import, and see if you get the same problem.

I really do think it's something with database performance, and you can't check that kind of stuff from the wp admin.

Sorry I wasn't of more help.

Can I PM you login details to the site tosee how edit.php?post_type=page looks in the browser and how it looks when you view source?

You can, but I still think you're looking at a red herring.  I understand where you're talking about now- it uses the query option at the end of the string to formulate the UI for the page.  I have the same code on mine on several sites- one of them has more pages than yours.  And I'm not experiencing the same problems.  It's just text- it shouldn't slow down your site, as it's not following to other requests. There's something else going on that's causing your problem.

First, I don't think the number of posts is the problem.  It's a red herring.

Try this in mysql (or let me know if you've already done it)

Code: Text [Select]
  1. REPAIR TABLE wp_posts QUICK

The code that you posted is just to show the posts in the edit page so that you can hyperlink to them and edit.  I've seen sites with more posts than that not take nearly that long.

Ok, so the first thing to do is to get your question down to the minimum.  Then we can flesh it out.

If you were asking your question to someone standing in front of you who didn't have a lot of time, what would you ask?

Living Room / Re: I need a physics/chemistry/engineering/science forum

If you don't explain yourself they pretty much chastise you but if you do then they want clarification, they take this to the extreme.

My question is

edit.php and post-new.php take a long time to load

The rest is explanation, which will be asked if I don't post them initially any way.

The 'problem', if there is any, is that the question will be lost in the crowd if not answered quickly, they know it and if they make the effort to insist on clarification they should come back to read it.

If it is lost, and you don't come up with a solution, there is always the option to place a bounty on it.

And in my humble opinion, that bit that you posted as a question, isn't really one.  I can help you workshop it into a good question, if you'd like, but you have to be able to explain it to me for me to be able to do so, and I didn't really get the question from reading either.

I don't get your problem?  He was asking for clarification- which is the right thing to do if he doesn't understand the question?  And it is better to try to make your question generic for posterity's sake, i.e. unless you're asked about your specifics, just ask the question you want to ask instead of trying to 'frame' it.

Screenshot Captor / Feature Request: History of Captures
« Last post by wraith808 on August 03, 2015, 11:47 AM »
In the Screenshot Captor window, you have a list of the captures that you've done by default.  What I'd like is in a menu somewhere (whether it's in the right-click menu, or in the file menu) there to be a list of all files saved by Screenshot Captor, whether to the default location or by using the Save As command- as long as a file was saved, it would be in that list.  It can be limited to the last 10 captures if necessary, or it can be somewhere else if it's not limited.  I'd just like to see where the captures were, no matter what was saved.

Thoughts?

Each of these settings is a 'give and take' scenario. Each setting gives you something and takes away something depending on if it is turned on or off. There are no right or wrong ways to set them. It's up to each user to decide for themselves if what they gain is worth what they lose if they have a given setting turned on...or turned off.

I'll quote this again for truth.  Nothing comes free.  There are some pretty nifty features in windows 10- but to make them nifty, they have to have information.  You can cut that off pretty easily, and make your choices not to have the nifty.

It's much ado over nothing.

One thing to keep in mind about Windows 7.  It is out of mainstream support right now, in the extended support period.
ugh i hate this about ms.

I think it's unfair to expect Microsoft to support old software.

They're still releasing security updates. But they're not going to be adding new features. I don't find that unreasonable, especially since they consider Windows 7 to be two "generations" old at this point.

Agreed.  This was more of a PSA and FYI than anything else.  They have perfectly reasonable EOL procedures, IMO.  But, the more you know... and that was the only reason for this.

thanks for the info.  I have cancelled my automatic upgrade not for any reason other than i wasn't comfortable with the way it got integrated in my windows update and task tray.  Most likely, I'll wait a year or more before making any windows 10 upgrades to my machines that matter.  windows 7 and 8.1 are running smooth right now.

one of my very knowledgeable friends did the windows 10 upgrade and is very satisfied with it.  but he does the whole xbox thing and the thing he was raving about was the tight/smooth integration with windows 10 and xbox.

My take on the whole thing can be summed up, by a very good quote from the reddit thread that I think applies to the whole post.

That's my problem with this post. It tells people to change these settings to increase privacy, but does not explain what these changes actually do. No Onedrive integration, no Windows Defender, blocks Microsoft servers for diagnostics and feedback. It disables the p2p windows updates, which if I understand correctly could reduce bandwith usage if you have multiple computers in your network. I'm not going to do this on my computer, but I doubt Cortana is functional at all with all of these changes. Unplugging your PC is the most secure option, but you have to draw the line between functionality and security at some point. This post goes a bit further than I would like with disabling functionality.

That whole post to me seems to be a combination of FUD, and Microsoft not being clear in what they mean/were applying these too.

But I did want to get others' take on it.

... and even before reading these, I'd already done the custom, and already turned all of these off.  I figured, if I needed anything, I could turn them on later.

Thoughts?

I have a feature request: Ignore all topics (current & future) started by a certain user.

I think we've gone down that route before (the asking) and his response (and a good one) was that sort of thing leads to the fragmentation of the community.  But maybe his opinion has changed.

well, it just seems like you get more bang for the buck with the alibaba options.  the NUC seem to be ok...but the alibaba items sure seem to pack a lot of power in a small, fanless unit for pretty cheap.  I'm actually a little curious how they are.  but ultimately, i'm having a hard time comparing the specs and prices of these things.  the cpus are so confusing.

Not an alibaba, but my foxconn seemed the same way- to pack punch into a small package.  The power supply was where the problem was, however.  And now it won't boot at all.
