Still waiting to try it  :-[ I'm encouraged by your comments, wraith, because what you describe is pretty much exactly how I'm hoping to use it... eventually!

There's a locally produced Irish Cream Ale that's very nice, but my favourite is Kilkenny, which is apparently very similar to Mo........... er, Smithwicks. I *must* try a Black and Tan. Right, off to the liquor store! Actually, we keep getting ever more imported beers here and I'm pretty sure that I can get Smithwicks so will give that a try as well.

Big Jim - do you have Fry's and CompUSA on the east coast (of Canada) or do you "cross the line" to shop in those stores? Just curious... all we have on the West Coast is Future Shop (which started in Vancouver 20 years ago or so but was bought out by Best Buys at some point).

They actually install side by side no problem... I installed Your Uninstaller 2008 Pro and then used it to uninstall the previous version. It occurs to me that I had already registered 2008, though, so this may have helped.

Personally, I preferred the old version in which you commented an interesting thread of your choice briefly. It made the newsletter more enjoyable for me, since I check the site daily (almost) and I don't find much use in going through lists of links I already visited. Just my two cents.

Thanks for that alternate p.o.v., Lashiec - I'll keep it in mind! Perhaps my "minimialist" approach of late has gone too far, eh?  ;D

I'm a bit of an all-round beer fan - love the IPA's as well!

At the moment, though, I'm really into the Irish Cream Ales.

I've had it installed for a few days now and am really pleased that it is much quicker than the the previous version

I LOVE stout! However, I doubt that I've ever had any greater than about 4.5%, so can't comment on stronger ones...

Yeah... I've actually spent a fortune on registry cleaners and still have Registry Medic installed, but rarely use it and only VERY judiciously.

I haven't exactly had negative experiences with registry cleaners, it's more that I have come to appreciate how cautiously they should be used - simply scanning and accepting changes (deletions usually but sometimes re-directions) is asking for trouble down the road - broken links, apps that will no longer run, "un-registration"/de-activation of applications, Active-X components and dlls messed up, help files missing, uninstallation paths wiped out, etc.).

Re: the actual point of this thread, I think it is absolutely disgusting to charge an end-user for the privilege of continuing to use a desktop application.

PS Perhaps this thread should be migrated to the Directory Opus 9 thread I referenced above?

Cool. You can download it or use it as an online application. Nice.

Good thing too. It's a 627MB download!

Wow! Great find, Zaine. This is unbelievably cool (ok, so it's not unbeleivable, but it's close). I'm downloading it now

Fair comment and it took me a moment to remember why I posted this here, in its own thread rather than in the Directory Opus 9 thread... (full 64-bit support). However, given that other thread runs to seven pages, I suppose I should have posted it there. Point taken, mouser  ;)

Well... there are two installers, and the one for the 64-bit version (22MB) is 33% bigger than 32-bit version (14.8MB)  :o So the size hasn't even doubled

Tinman57 - I think the issue is more that using reg cleaners is an enterprise best entered into with EXTREME caution. I've given up on them (and RAM optimizers) as being more trouble than they are worth.

Still, I'm glad that you are using one successfully. I can only assume that you are very conscienttious about vetting the changes that a regsitry cleaner decides are necessary for your system and throw some of the suggestions out? What cleaner do you use, by the way?

Living Room / Re: Any old Amiga users among us?
« Last post by Darwin on December 08, 2007, 06:08 PM »
You guys make me feel like I really missed out. I have always felt the same about NextStep computers. I actually had a chance to play with one while I was doing my masters degree - my supervisor actually built his own NextStep machine to replace his original one. I used to sit and drool over the things he could do with it... Then I'd wander back to my notebook running Windows for Workgroups 3.11...

Anyway, I understand what App was talking about earlier - I regret not having used one "in the day". I don't really recall Amiga being a "player" after about 1991/2 - certainly, I don't recall ever having seen one for sale in a shop anywhere in the sleepy little hamlet that I lived in (and still live in!).

The silver lining is that I never had to go through "falling in love" with the system and watching it effectively disappear.

Heh, heh - I just read your other post and came back here to direct everyone to it. Interesting/scary read. Funny, isn't it, how 15 years ago the received wisdom, at least in Canada, was that the power drawn by a televsion that was powered off wasn't worth worrying about. How times change.

Wordzilla's search tweaks are just AWESOME! I guess I'm showing my "DC Age" when I say: "Yup. I remember when searching the Donationcoder forum was a waste of time".

My understanding is that the terabyte drives are lot more prone to failure than smaller drives. My source? Donationcoder of course! You want me to cite it? Er...  :-[

That's crazy, f0dder. Thanks for posting about it - I'll be unplugging my computers at night from now on. Probably wise to do the same with TVs, stereos, and other non-essential appliances. You know what they say "Think globally, act locally".

Good tip

4GB RAM in a notebook for less than $2500 - sweet. I haven't seen any high-end Windows based notebooks on offer with 4GB RAM in that or any price range (I live in a small town) - makes me wonder if Apple is beginning to realise that there's money to be made now that their hardware will run either Windows or OSX? Actually, stupid me, I thought this was the whole point with they switched to Intel and then they seemed to be proving me wrong. Maybe I was right after all...

48 proof! I find Belgian beer hard to drink and it's in the 7.5 to 10% alcohol range. I suspect that 24% alcohol is going to be unpalatable, at least for me  :o
