Living Room / Re: Adding New Software Authors to the Site
« Last post by mouser on June 17, 2005, 12:23 AM »
i think one of the major reasons to join us will be the community we are building here, both users and authors - so i'm committed to keeping everyone involved in the decision making process.  it's only a success if its a success for everyone and everyone.  this site will succeed only to the extend that it is a useful place for everyone.

the hardest part is trying to figure out how other authors/reviewers, will get donations..

i was so happy about my idea of having a form where users could use sliders to divide up their donations.. but as i think about it i think it's just too complicated and prone to troubles.

it would be a tax nightmare, it would require everyone trust me to divide up donations, it would require software for filling out forms, and processing donations, and calculating how to divide, and then there's the work in dividing up donations.  i think it's dead in the water.

instead, i think the answer has to be for authors (and reviewers too), to have their own (paypal or whatever) donation buttons, and have users donate directly to them.

the easy stuff is that authors would of course have free hosting, forum, any software or anything else they need set up, and anything else we can help with, web design, hosting personal web space, etc.  anything we can do to help them make their software.

and of course the main thing is just the visibility of being on the site, which hopefully would give them more visitors, and more visitors who would be in the mind to donate.  and perhaps we can help feature authors or do other things to help people find out about their software.  again a key would be having a community of users and were friendly to the idea of donating for good software and supporting authors.

as we've discussed before, we would not let just any author join.  they would have to meet certain standards in terms of quality, offer more than one real program, not be selling shareware, and be willing to participate on their forum section so users could talk to them.

my current inclination is to set it up like this, and keep the main membership requirement that users make a donation to the site - money that other authors would not receive.  this would be in recognition of the work that has been involved and continues to be required on a day to day basis running this site and writing software and reviews, and to pay for hosting costs, etc.  but i am very open to the idea of revisiting this idea if for some reason an author brought in lots of people who donated to the site but not to the author.  it's a little hard for me to see that scenario unfolding, but it's certainly not inconceivable that at the end of every year we could donate some of the money that has come in from site donations back to authors if it seems like authors are not getting a fair portion of the donations.  ideally my intention would be that authors get donations in relation to their contribution to the community here - the trouble is there is no way to measure this, so we have to rely on users donating to authors they want to support.  so really the key is the users taking the time to donate to authors.  i don't think it needs reiterating but this site will not profit off the backs of other author's work, and if it turns out that an author is helping the site grow but is not receiving donations while the site does, then we will have to find a way to remedy that somehow.

i think we'd also have to find a better "Software/Downloads" start page, rather than our current one ( https://www.donation.../Software/index.html ) in order to make it easier to find author's work.

maybe a nicer layout with the main authors having bigger images that make it easier to see, OR even putting authors links with pics on the main page above that 3x3 grid of icons..

i was thinking that for the next set of reviews we could do image viewers..
im not an expert on this so i could use a co-reviewer or full guest review.. any takers?

i'm thinking things like: acdsee, compupic, picasa, irfanview, etc.

Living Room / Adding New Software Authors to the Site
« Last post by mouser on June 16, 2005, 05:12 PM »
I think it might be time to start serious movement to adding new authors to the site.
I'm going to post some detailed thoughts about this in the next day or so and i'd like the considered opinions of you guys/gals, in order to make this idea really work for everyone.  I think it's going to be an exciting time for this site.

« Last post by mouser on June 16, 2005, 12:53 AM »
here's what i can tell you, and i need to repeat, i am not a fan of official agnitum support team, and im not a salesman for outpost :)

1) i've been using outpost for several years now, and it has been rock solid stable for me.  ie it never crashes, never bluescreens.
now obviously you've got an issue, and you're not the only one given the forum, but it does mean that in general its not a buggy app, and given the volume of traffic on the forum it shouldnt be surprising to find some others with bluescreens.

2) outpost is actively developed, and win xp sp2 is a big user base, so i would be quite sure they care about making it stable on this platform.

i can only suggest to keep looking to try to figure out what is making it freak out - clearly its a problem not with you but with the app, but maybe you can try to figure out what is triggering it.. some other app may be trying to make a specific connection, or something like that..  actually there was a known bluescreen issue that a friend figured out a cause for.. it had to do with a certain cygwin-compiled app trying to establish a connection.. see if you can figure out what is causing the bluescreen... try disabling all plugins.

i guess ive learned to not expect much from any official tech support of any product, at least when it comes to me experiencing problems.
(like i said i've hade my own small struggles with outpost, but i still love it)

ive complained plenty about agnitum support...
but then when you take into consideration the unofficial forum..
i wonder if, relatively speaking, agnitum isnt still better in total support scenario than most others..

looking a little better i think; notice that you can use stylesheets and templates to customize exactly how you want it to look, with formatting, fonts, tables, justification, etc.

Cheat Sheeter / what's next
« Last post by mouser on June 15, 2005, 02:53 AM »
there's still tons of work to do, and the appearance of the app may change a bit - haven't figured out how much i like titlebar and other stuff, but what i'd really like to do next is
1) make a css stylesheet with a reasonable set of tags.
2) make some real sample hotkey pages and cheat sheets, etc. for some real apps. common ones.
maybe mozilla, internet explorer, thebat, ultraedit,
and some system system howto's.
3) maybe add some clipart that will help the construction of such things, ie key images for all the keys.
4) write instructions for how to make sets of sheets.

i wouldnt count on the official agnitum support system to help much - they have a pretty bad track record.
now the forums are another story, and can be very helpfull.

i should say..  it may not look like its doing much, but its actually doing quite a bit behind the scenes..
you can also dock the window to the side of the screen, and as you use apps it will start to add buttons when it sees you using an app it knows how to help you with.

www.donationcoder.com/MemberDownloads/CheatSheeter.zip

this has no help, no instructions, and the info pages dont exist.. so its not usable per se.
but it does demonstrate basic functionality and is completely usable for anyone who is brave and wants to try to create some cheat sheets.

just follow the model of the ultra edit infopages, i'm available for help.

there are 2 sample css files, but these will NOT be the final css models - we need to come up with a set of divs and tags that all info pages should use.

anyway - this download is useless for anyone but real masochists that are bored.

i don't know how good this program is, but zero didn't mention that the author recently moved it from shareware to freeware; remember - if you find a freeware you like, send the author an email and tell him/her how much you appreciate their giving their soft to public.

have you checked the outpost forum yet?
sp2 has been out for a long time, there is no way that outpost isn't designed to work with it, so something else must be at issue.

have you tried clean uninstall and reinstall?

General Review Discussion / Re: What categories should we review next?
« Last post by mouser on June 14, 2005, 01:16 PM »
i do think we need to make a stronger effort here to identify good freeware apps, and authors who are asking for donations.  i think it's important to lend some support for other donation-based authors.

any ideas for how we could do this in ways other than full reviews?

i suggest we set up a special page for Freeware/Donationware authors that we like - basically expanding our idea of a links section for our favorite freeware authors (ie this won't be a page for singleton programs, but rather for authors who have devoted considerable effort to making freeware+donationware programs, and who don't sell commercial software).

thx.. seems this was a bug, drgreen and i found the problem, it was in simpleexports.cpp,
the code was calling free(XXX) when it should have been calling delete [] XXX.

(free what you alloc, delete what you new)!
