Best ScreenCaster / TechSmith has donated 5 free copies of Camtasia Studio 3
« Last post by mouser on June 20, 2005, 08:26 PM »
I'm really pleased to announce that TechSmith has donated to us 5 free copies of Camtasia Studio 3 (their latest version to be released at the end of June).

Was a very nice gesture on the part of TechSmith, and we will be giving out these copies to members of the site.

My intention is to give most of them away to the next guest reviewers, partly as a sign of appreciation, and partly to help them with their reviews.

the new version 3 beta does sound like they are adding some key features they have been missing:

I've posted the 50% discount codes for BB FlashBack and BB FlashBack Express in the members only section of the forum.

I was thrilled that we were able to get discounts on both the high end and low end programs from blueberry consoltants because it means a fantastic deal for both people who know they are serious about screencasting, and those that just want to dabble in it.

If you read the review you'll see that we really liked BB FlashBack Express a lot, and this discount makes the program $20, which is an incredibly amazing bargain - i highly recommend you take advantage of this even if you're not sure you really need to the program, just in case.  Let's show blueberry that offering discounts through us is a good way to reach people that might not otherwise be customers.

Unfinished Requests / Re: IDEA: Spring-loaded folders!
« Last post by mouser on June 19, 2005, 10:03 PM »
what explorer and others don't do it "unspring" and close after the operation.. i also dont know if auto-opening occurs only in tree(folder) pane.
personally that's fine with me, i prefer them to stay open and don't need it working in main panel..

http://www.virustotal.com/

a friend passed this to me and speaks highly of it.  it's a free service that will let you upload (or email) files to it which it then checks for viruses using multiple well-known virus scanning engines.  great for a second opinion if your antivirus reports something suspicious.

what operating system are you using orange?
also, can you tell me if it exits normally if you right click and select "exit" from the tray?

i'm going to try some experiments on a vmware as soon as you tell me what os you have,
but another thing worth trying is going into options -> general settings -> close to tray.
(then make sure you use minimize button to make it go into the tray not close button which will close it).
if that works then at least its a clue.

Best Firewall / Re: Outpost and WinXP SP2

that sounds like the official agnitum tech support team i remember, lol.
you'd think if they have these form letter replies the least they could do is send them to you more expiditiously.

ps.
imho hardware firewalls/routers are useless for almost every possible danger you should be worried about.
if you are an isp at risk for denial of service attacks, a hardware firewall is important, but for a home user, they are useless, and a software firewall is what you need.

Mouser's Zone / how i work on programs
« Last post by mouser on June 17, 2005, 06:12 PM »
i just wanted to write a note to people who make suggestions or bug reports..
hopefully its clear over time from watching the forum, but basically i try to address serious bugs right away, and other features for my programs tend to get added in batches.  so just because i don't act on a suggestion right away doesn't mean that i'm ignoring it.  it's just with a large group of programs i'm usually only working on one or two at a atime, and suggestions for the others get recorded and will wait until i shift back into doing major work on that program.

you should run a software firewall, at any cost.

can you try this version and let me know if it solves the problem?

it's just a new exe, so copy it over existing one to use it.

great to hear that nudone has agreed to do this review, let's all give him as much help as possible by helping to identify programs, features, weaknesses, etc.

I've always liked ThumbsPlus, and i've tried AcdSee a couple times and got turned off it when it stalled in the middle of an uninstall once and left garbage all over my registry and stuff.  but i heard its gotten better.  thumbsplus seemed less busy to me and easier to concentrate on.

thanks! it's always nice to hear that someone likes a program.
i'll try to have a fixed version up in the next day or two for you to test-
any problem that is reproducable is usually easily to fix.

there's no rush to do graphic viewer this week (also dont forget its a two week process now), so let's just postpone graphics viewers until you are ready to do it - better to have a good review by someone who knows the subject better than me.

let me try to fix it this weekend - it's probably just a simple thing that im not obeying a request for system close - trying to minimize instead.

ok yes i see now..  this is probably a more complicated award then it first looks... you have photo management tools with some viewing ability (like acdsee), and then you have these super efficient mini viewers like irfanview.

i guess to be honest im really not qualified to review either :)
so back to the drawing board or search for guest reviewer.

the scenario i was thinking of is perhaps if there is an "unsaved" change to a file pending.

yipe.. i guess that would be considered a bug :)
ill try to identify problem and fix this weekend...
is it reproducable? (ie happen every time? i have it running 24/7 on my machine and haven't noticed this, but i don't reboot often, and i can think of one scenario where it might happen).

Living Room / Re: Adding New Software Authors to the Site
« Last post by mouser on June 17, 2005, 01:15 AM »
one requirement that i think might be somewhat controversial is my view that an author on donationcoder.com should not have some freeware programs on donationcoder and others offered as shareware.  i don't have a problem with shareware, and iff an author decides at some point they want to leave donationcoder.com and pursue shareware that's of course perfectly fine.  but  i just think it would be inappropriate for DonationCoder.Com authors to be here and also sell shareware simultaneously. *

*i'm completely open to a kind of dual-license for commercial use, where an author might say that if you use a tool in some direct COMMERCIAL capacity, you are expected to make a certain donation after you start realizing profits.  i think it would be nice to see some programming libraries offered through DonationCoder.com of this flavor.

i'd also be interested in hearing any ideas you guys/gals have about what you would want from authors who join the site.. we don't want to set up silly beurocratic rules - i'm more interested in a general spirit that authors can look at and say, yes this site really suits me, or say, hmm.. no this does not match my goals and attitude.  one thing i have made clear in discussions is that participation to some extent on the forums to talk with users of your programs is important to us.. any other thoughts?

Living Room / Re: Adding New Software Authors to the Site

maybe having to donate to individual authors is not really a problem.. if one assumes that a user won't be donating all at once, but just on occasion when the mood hits them when they find a program they like.  it would mean that donations would be more focused on the programs that people actually use and want to support, rather than simply donating and saying spread my donation equally to everyone.

again the success is going to depend on users seeing the value in supporting the authors through donations.

i guess another possibility is that people will start donating 10 cents to the site and their main donation to other authors..
and another downside is that if someone wanted to donate to 10 different authors it would be prohibitive, since they'd have to make 10 separate donations...  not really a problem if we only have 2 or 3 or 4 authors, but when we have 10.. :(
