by the way, langalist is here: http://www.langa.com/

maybe if a long time langalist reader and fan sees this post, you can post a reply telling us a little about langalist and why you like it - members here might find that useful.

moving posts recommending specific software from Living Room to Software In The Wild as appropriate.

either one..
if its just to tell us about 1 single program then software in the wild might be the place, otherwise living room.

actually i was thinking of merging those two sections.. what do you think?  they do seem to have a lot of overlap.

Living Room / Re: Scripting utility suggestions?
« Last post by mouser on June 27, 2005, 11:25 PM »
i'd like to hear the answer to this as well.
i've tried autopilot in the past and liked it.  Automate and WinTask seem quite powerful.

primalscript is really for writing full scripts as in javascript, vb, etc.

my experience is that there isn't much of an overlap in the application of these tools beyond that that both talk about working with "scripts".  if you want to write a mini program, as a programmer, then primalscript is good.  but for automating stuff without having to sit in front of a book for a few hours to learn how to do something with vbs or javascript, then these automation tools are the way to go.

if anyone feels like they are competent to do a serious review of scripting/automation tools, i'd love to sign you up for a guest review; not going to be an easy review since there are some deep features to explore and several serious contenders, but it would be a great review to have.  you'd definitely get a reward of one of the screencasting tools :)

re: searching url titles:

the idea of searching favorites by title is a good one..
this definitely does get into the idea we have been discussing about having different kinds of searches configured,
which i still haven't figure out 100%.  but yeah i think we should be able to add that as an option.

re: regex
this doesn't really touch on the idea of multiple configurations, but basically it would let you set up any kind of commands you could want.
for example, you might want to add a command to create a new blank file in a certain directory and open it for editing.
so you might make a command like
medit (.*)

which executed a command like "C:\Program Files\UltraEdit.exe C:\MyDocuments\$1"

so that if you typed in f&r
"medit notes"

then it would launch ultraedit and create/open the file C:\MyDocuments\notes.

basically it would let you configure any phrases to execute any applications or scripts.

as another example, you might have a program that you tend to launch with different commandline parameter, etc.
you could add some command phrases to let you indicate how to open it.

like typing:
firefox proxy
might be set to open up firefox using a certain proxy configuration
etc.  basically you could use regular expressions to be able to let you specify the exact form of the command and any arguments that would need to be passed to the program or script.

and i'm open to adding more special functions/scripts so that you can type things that will cause text to be pasted in the current app, etc., like i know some other programs do.

this is all pretty straightforward actually.

the real lingering difficult issue is that raised by kfitting and cracksloth about how to best organize for supporting multiple different kinds of searchers that can be switched between, especially for those who want to use f&r as a file searcher rather than an app launcher.

it's actually tempting to think about adding a different "mode" to f&r which would have a bigger results window, not limited to a small number of results, with easier way to indicate where to search, and maybe support for things like letting you search mp3 tags, etc.

General Review Discussion / Re: What categories should we review next?
« Last post by mouser on June 27, 2005, 04:14 PM »
website soft review is def needed.
we really need to get a few more reviewers who can write long comprehensive reviews on a category they know well enough to do a good job on.

i think maybe we should have a poll of possible review categories
so we can see which categories people want to see reviewed the most.

it's a big category -
don't hesitate to restrict it if it gets overwhelming.

for example, if there are simply too many tools and its too hard to pick one or two best ones, then i think you should feel free to make it a review of Pro-level image management tools, and then rightfully reject any tool that cant handle raw, psd, psp, etc.

i use this freeware tool called "Discover" to move windows off screen back on screen:
http://www.geocities...2/main/freeware.html

i used it for my laptop a lot. simple easy.

but now back to your idea-
i have started investigating the possibility of making a program that can add items to windows menus and stuff - part of a larger utility.  it's not going to be for a while though, but i hope you'll be around when we get it done to make suggestions.

someone was asking me not too long ago about a free poster printer.
this one looks nice; supports multiple languages.

they are asking for donations.
(ps - when you make a donation to a program you hear about at donationcoder.com, tell them you heard about them on our site).

« Last post by mouser on June 27, 2005, 09:39 AM »
i agree that most people won't care about .psd display.

but then for serious power users, it would be annoying to use a viewer that didn't support it.

this isn't a great answer to your question, but my attitude about these things is kind of like this.  iff it seems like these viewers that don't support psd were not going to win best commercial or best freeware image viewer anyway, whether you cared about psd of not, then there's no harm excluding them really.

the only time it gets tricky is if you have an app that would be best freeware/commercial viewer for people who don't need psd.  thats when you have to ask yourself whether someone who doesn't care about psd would have wanted to know about this program.

well this was my point about regex
you could easily customize it any way you wanted, right?

although it might be easier to add a special function to help correct urls.

i'd like to hear suggestions for adding "commands" to F&R.

here is one way we could do it that would be really flexible.
we could have a tab called "Commands"
where you could specify a regular expression, and then a program (or script) to execute based on a match.

so for example you could do like this:

"go (www\.*)" -> "firefox.exe http://$1"

something like that, which would say, if user ever types anything like "go www.google.com" or "go www.amazong.com" it would load the page in the browser.

regular expression support would make it quite flexible i think, and not very difficult to implement.

any other ideas?

Find and Run Robot was mentioned in this week's Langalist newsletter: http://langa.com/new...005/2005-06-27.htm#8

i wanted to thank publically the person (Rajeev) who took the time to write in to them about F&R; it's a really nice feeling to see letters like that, and it's really only by word of mouth like this that people find out about our site.

and wanted to welcome langalist members to our site - hope some of you decide to stay and join us

it's always nice to have new people come and find a home here.

have you tried weather pulse yet?

it's listed in part 1 of our weather tray review
https://www.donation...erTray/index_p1.html

its very similar to weather watcher, but it has a special page for maps, and has some animated maps too.
they are organized a little differently.

definietly worth checking out though.

still i would say they arent perfect.

does anyone who loves looking at such map know any other weather tools that are really good at letting you navigate around weather maps?

the maps are definitely fun - but there are so many its a little overwhelming.
the map history menu is useful, but a "favorite maps" menu where you could choose what to put in there might be more useful.
