Screenshot Captor / Re: How to auto-move folder without subdirectories?
« Last post by superboyac on July 28, 2010, 11:18 AM »
there is no option for that but i could add it.
Yes, that would be a handy feature.  I know you've said you're working on other things currently, so there's no rush or anything.  Thanks.

I always like to point out mylife organized's backup settings because it's the best implementation of it that I've seen.  I think it applies to SC also (just with old screenshots vs. backup files).  Below is a picture of it:

I'm familiar with that window.  But where do I specify ad directory where I want my old screenshots to go?  Unless I'm mistaken, that dialog gives the option for naming subdirectories, but what about the main, parent directory?  I noticed that the default folder for old screenshots is called "OLDER", but where is the option to set the OLDER folder, or in my case, I want to change it to say Archive, and it won't necessarily be in the same folder as the recent screenshots.

I like the auto-move options, but I don't want any more subdirectories.  I just want one "archive" folder and move all the old files there.  How can I keep the auto-move option enabled without any subdirectories?  Thanks.
I'd also like to name the move-to directory myself and call it whatever I like, in this case "Archive".

Hi everyone, one more thing I need:
A whiteboard I can draw on and share over the net.  It needs to be Mac AND Windows compatible.  I just tried idroo, which is nice, but I realized it's only for the PC.  Then, I also realized that it doesn't necessarily have to work with Skype.  It can be independant.  I'll talk through skype, but the whiteboard is entirely different.  Thanks.

Logitech web cams and Windows 7 don't get along well from what I've read.

You might want to consider a Microsoft web cam.

Checking google comes up with lots of trouble regarding Logitech web cams.
With Windows 7 anyway.
Hmmm...I don't use Windows 7, but I'll consider that.  I found a guy who reviews webcams online and he raved about the 9000.  And newegg and amazon all have pretty strong ratings for it.  Maybe I'll get it and then if I need to go to win7, i'll deal with it then.  I don't anticipate going to it anytime soon.

I've used Skype to Video conference with both Windows and Mac users, all went well. It's idiot simple and passed my "If I have to open help to make a call you suck" test with flying colors.

Not sure what the (wife's) plan is for tonight, but if I'm free ... I'm game to play target.
Thanks, I'll give it a shot.  I may late tonight...around 8pm (PST).  I'll PM you.  I appreciate it.  I need to get a webcam also.  I've just about settled on the Logitech 9000.

OK, continuing the trend of recommendations I have asked for lately:
Now, I'm looking for the best solution for video conferencing, with some kind of desktop sharing feature included.

I like to avoid cloud-based services.  I'd rather run the application from one or both computers (server+client, or just two clients).  There are only two parties involved, so two computers.  One is a PC, one is Mac.  Also, I don't want to have to pay a monthly fee if it can be avoided.  I'd like freeware, but good shareware will also be considered, especially if it is really nice.

I'd like to be able to see video and hear audio (hence, video conferencing).  But I also want to have some kind of whiteboard and/or a desktop sharing feature where I can open a screen or file on my computer and point to things with my mouse, and have my friend see all that on his computer.  A whiteboard would be nice if I want to sketch something out.  I have a Wacom tablet, so I'm already setup for the digital pen interface.

Again, I hate the cloud, monthly charge services, so I'd like to avoid that as much as possible.

I've researched a little already, and the best solution I've seen so far is Skype.  I haven't tried it yet, maybe I'll try it tonight.  If anyone has it and would offer to let me try it out with them on the other end, I'd be thankful for that.  Mac/PC cross-platform is a must.  Simplicity is preferred, my friend is not a computer poweruser.

As usual, I'm not simply asking for what options are available.  I'm more interested in the ones that YOU prefer and hopefully you have had good experiences with.  I know how to use Google and search for things.  Please help point me down the right path.  Thanks, as always!

Update:
I just quickly tried Dexpot without spending more than a minute setting it up.  So far, it seems to be working!  I'm pretty happy about it.

Stoic, if that's true, I'm glad they fixed that.  that would be very useful.

Veign, thanks for the suggestion.  If Dexpot doesn't do the trick I'll try that out also.

Problem:
When I'm at work, sometimes I take a laptop to a meeting and connect via Remote Desktop Connection to my desktop at my cubicle.  The problem is that my desktop is a dual monitor setup, and I have windows set up on both monitors.  But when I connect remotely, the laptop has to reorganize all those windows into one screen.  When I return to my desktop later, all the windows are all shuffled around and I need to put them back in their place.

Question:
How can I save the state of my dual monitor desktop, and restore it quickly when I come back to my pc?  Is this something that I would need to use a virtual desktop manager for?  Like dexpot?

Thanks.

Hmm.. I spent over 12 hours converting a wmv to mp4 so it would play on PS3 and the PS3 says the file is corrupt. >:(

The file seems to play fine in Windows Media Player though. :-\
I made a thread about this kind of frustrations.  Dealing with video files is so hairy.  Codecs, different players, container formats, ability to seek, interlacing, framerates...ugh.

i think finding the download for super is purposely made to be confusing, frustrating, and error prone,
in order to prepare you for the experience of using the software itself.

definitely a powerful program, but one of the more frustrating programs to use.. i don't recommend it for people who just want to quickly convert something.
Very true.  There's another thread here about good conversion programs.  I like Super when I need to do weird conversions and you want control over every little thing.  It's extremely flexible that way.

For nice and easy conversions, i use formatfactory.  It was recommended here.

Small, lightweight, and portable, you might want to try Martin's IDE3. It does have file transfer capabilities.

I posted about it here (near end of that post) and a few posts down from that I attached a copy of it, in case you want to try it out.
I posted in the thread.  I'm excited about this one.  If it works, it can really streamline some of our work.

Not a problem, and thanks!

Just got done playing with it a bit. Seems pretty straight forward. Nice look and feel.

I'm very impressed. :greenclp:
If 40hz likes it, it must be good.  I'm going to give this a serious shot.  I just took a look at it and it's really nice, lightweight and simple.  I hope it works for my needs.  I haven't figured out how to set up the server yet, but I've only spent 30 seconds on it.  Thanks!

I'm trying to streamline my interaction with my supervisor because we work at a fast pace.  I am constantly having to have him proof read documents, emails, etc. before sending them out.  What is the best way to do this kind of collaboration in the office over our intranet (LAN)?

If possible, keep the recommendations to freeware or to the MS Office suite.  It won't be easy for me to get shareware.  Everyone has the Office applications.

Ideally, I'd like to write an email or some text...then I can quickly shoot it over to him in over a chat-like interface where he receives a notification.  Then, he reviews it, quickly comments, and sends it back to me.  Then I can send it out formally.

Is this something the Sharepoint Workspace can do, or something similar to that?  The only other way I can think of is to send him emails, and have him email me back.  I don't like that because instead of one formal email going out, there will be many drafts going back and forth and then a formal one.  It's too much.

Any suggestions?  Thanks, as always.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: CHS vs. ArsClip
« Last post by superboyac on July 19, 2010, 12:03 PM »
very good observations; the icons in menu is a cool idea.

as for customizing which clips show in the quick paste popup, open CHS main window, right-click on the Quick Paste group and edit it and modify the SQL for the virtual folder.  by default it's: "NOT (IsInRecyleBin) AND (ModificationDateTime>=DateTimeMinusOneHour)"
if you change that to just "NOT (IsInRecyleBin)" you might see what you want.
Thanks mouser, that did the trick.  For options like those, I might recommend doing it with checkboxes and radio buttons in the options dialog.  I'm as willing a fiddler as there can be, and I usually get turned away whenever I see coding necessary.  Not to make more work for you!!  I know you've been planning on updating your software after finishing up your current projects.

superboyAC, did you mention your ArsClip issues to Joe?  I can't comment about Office because I haven't used it, but I haven't always found configuration as obvious as I'd have liked.  Then again, some functions overlap with other programs I use more often, so I'm not so familiar.
I have not.  I haven't had time to figure out exactly when it happens.  This is really the only forum I participate in regularly these days.

It's also a terrible name for a software.  The official name is "Super©" yes, the copyright symbol is part of it.

You know, I'm going to create my own software...let's say for business modeling...and I'm going to call it:
"Program®"

That will make it easy to find.

By far the most convoluted download link I've ever had the pleasure *not* to find
- which is why I posted ;-)
I always chuckle whenever I visit the Super site.  It's like a Where's Waldo for download links.  Lots of text also.  Just blah blah blah blah blah, next page...blah blah blah blah, next page, blah blah blah, is that a download link there?  Doh, nope!  blah blah blah...
^^ That is an accurate description of a visit to the Super site.

The saving grace of the software is that it's free and it does pretty much everything you can think of.

Hello Tomos,
I am sorry to hear that the PC-fax solution only works with AVM hardware.
There are (very few) other fax over IP solutions out there. If it is something you need frequently, it may be worth spending some time with Google.

I've always liked this guy's ideas for software.  i was looking for start menu organizer a while back, and I ran into his program Tidy Start Menu.  I didn't buy it (sorry!) but it was the best start menu organizer that I came across.  He has a good ideas and I like how he keeps it simple and practical, without a bunch of bubbly nonsense.

I also find it hilarious that he keeps using that same picture for all his avatars, contact info...I immediately recognized it when I saw this post!

I just read the other day that Google just changed their algorithm.  The article also went on to say that they also manually changed the rankings for some reason.  I figure it's for the almighty $$$.  Move their paid advertisers rankings to the top to keep them happy and make more money.....

I stopped using google years ago, and have been using Bing since it started up.  Only time I use google is if I need to do a HTTPS search......
is bing really better?  I tried it a couple of times and wasn't that impressed.  Can you describe why you like it better?

Clipboard Help+Spell / CHS vs. ArsClip
« Last post by superboyac on July 15, 2010, 12:45 PM »
I've been using clipboard managers for several years now.  The top two programs are CHS and ArsClip.  I have phases where I switch between the two for a variety of reasons.  The last couple of years, I've been using Arsclip.  Now, I've switched back to CHS.  Why?  ArsClip gets a lot of errors with MS Office applications, and I got tired of it.  CHS is more problem-free as of now for me.

So i wanted to discuss some of the pros and cons for each one.  I know mouser is always open to suggestions, so please consider any of this however you like.

For these clipboard managers, I ONLY use them with the pop-up under the mouse pointer feature.  I don't really do anything else with the note taking features, or other functions.  So keep that in mind.

One little thing I like about Arsclip is that when you place something in the clipboard, the popup list shows the icon of the application the clip came from.  i like that.  it gives a nice visual for the popup.  Doesn't really do anything practical, it's just nice.  Here's a screenshot:
screenshot_20100715102834.png

What I don't like about arsclip is the way the popup is organized.  It's weird and confusing.  And adjusting the options for it are just as weird and confusing.  it works fine for me, but it's just strange.  CHS's organization is much more logical and straightforward.  We all know mouser has a great feel for user interfaces.

What I'm having a hard time figuring out with CHS is the automatic filing method for the clips.  There are a lot of options about how long to wait before placing items in certain places (old, new, recycle, when to delete, etc.).  I don't know about others, but I just want the list to simply show the past 30 clips (or whatever number).  By default there is some auto-filing happening.  i know I asked about this years ago, and mouser gave me some code to do what I wanted (it's here on the forum somewhere).  If I could suggest to simplify some of those auto-filing features?  I can suggest some things later, if it's not clear what I'm asking for.  I can't suggest right now, because I've only skimmed the options so far.  I can come back later when I've given it a more thorough look.

CHS definitely is working better for me with the Office apps.  Arsclip would always give me errors when I clipped things from Excel.

I like the tray icon for CHS better.

Could we add options to make the popup prettier?  Can we specify how we want the index number to look?  Right now, it's just 1,2,3,4 with an underline and hyphen.  it would be fun if I can choose the font, formatting (bold, underline, etc.), size, and color of the index number.
screenshot_20100715103854.png

Another really nice feature would be to beef up the already great quick search function.  Could you do it like evernote, where the matches get highlighted live as you type?  And if there are more than one word to find, they get highlighted in different colors?

Thre may be a middle ground here. Many cellphones have to option to connect them to a computer via USB. Part of the driver that is installed (assuming you can find it) is for using the cellphone as a modem ... Add the Windows fax service and you're there.

Just a thought.
Another interesting one!  Where were you guys two days ago??

You can email to a fax machine using the internet infrastructure called tpc.int

Just go to http://www.tpc.int and all will be explained.

There are volunteer fax servers set up all over the world (a list of area codes is provided) and you just email your content to a specially formatted email address (not too tricky) or use the provided client and your email will be forwarded to the fax server via internet and faxed locally.

This project has been online and functioning for years.

Ain't the net magic??   ;D

Doh!  Now you tell me!  i went to Kinko's yesterday to fax 6 pages...it cost $9!!  What a rip.
