Living Room / Re: DonationCoder.com Mascot needed
« Last post by mouser on July 01, 2005, 09:36 PM »
An image of a keyboard with some coins scattered across it makes more sense to me than a cat.

maybe we need a pic of a cat hunched over the keyboard typing furiously :)

in all seriousness - your point is valid wrt a LOGO - we could use a new one of those too,
but i was talking here about a mascot for fun stuff.

having the mascot part of the logo might be the best combo though, so you're point is not out of line.
im not at all fixed on the idea of a cat.. could be like a little robot.

anyone ever see the pictures in david ahl's famous "Basic Computer Games" (either new or old) - something like that might be fun, a happy computer on wheels or robot.

regarding logo, it would be nice if it captured the spirit of community idea - and not be so centered around the programmer.

i appreciate that sentinel -
i sometimes try to think of ways to get out the word, but by far the most important has been word of mouth from nice people like you guys spreading the word about the site to friends and acquiantences. it's much appreciated.

yeah i was really thinking of a non-interactive solution.
it actually is not a big deal for me, i have enough space so this shouldnt be an issue, i just fucked up once and thought, hmm there should be a better solution..

do you want to make the baloon appear for shorter or longer time?
unfortunatelly windows wont let me show them much (any?) shorter.. but if you want them to stay on screen longer, that i can do.

i'll set up a poll this weekend and we can just leave it running forever
and try to do reviews from top votes.
36733
well hell i'll write it if it dont exist as a coding snack.. but it HAS to exist.
this is just exactly the thing that people who run servers would need so i know it must exist.
36734
id bet my life there is a freeware tool out there that monitors free space and can be told to run an app or email you on full disk.

i was thinking that it would be fun to have a new award logo that was like picture of cat holding up his paw - like showing 5 fingers for a 5 star award.  maybe a cats paw holding a globe :)

yeah thats from simpons - we definitely would need another original one.
36737
right, just to clarify, the only thing im looking for is a program to automatically decide WHEN to empty the bin.
maybe there is a little resident tool that lets you run arbitrary app when drive space is full.

« Last post by mouser on June 30, 2005, 12:34 PM »
so nudone,
are you set for your 2 part review to begin on monday?
i am going to be online constantly and am happy to help, edit, test, etc.
and i will send you some html template files that you can use.

btw
i think all guest reviewers should set up a paypal or some other account that can receive donations, so that at the very least we can have a link from the reviews for people to make a donation to the reviewer if they want to show support.  certainly you shouldn't expect much but maybe enough for a celebratory dinner, etc. though you might have to celebrate at mcdonalds :)

I wish i could say with confidence that i've wasted my time wisely.  some of it hopefully.

those programs sound quite nice!

malacandra, we are still trying to figure out best ways to provide a good home to freeware authors so that they will receive donations and stuff.

if the files are already hosted somewhere and you are happy with that, and you already have web space, then there's probably nothing to be gained by creating another mirror at donationcoder.com

however, it is our intention to provide a home to freeware that doesn't have a good home, so if you find yourself lacking in web space or if winsite is not satisfactory, we would be happy to provide it to you.

otherwise, the links are probably good enough - though it might be nice if we set up a page here on donationcoder.com to list software made by members..

hubs can definitely cause issues.
*definitely* first thing to try is to connect it directly without a hub.

it wouldnt surprise me terribly if it were a hardware problem, either with hd or enclosure.
first job is figure out which one.

given your description i dont think its a bandwidth issue,
and i think you are very right to expend whatever effort is required to solve this problem.

my lesson with hds is that these kinds of issues are like god's way of telling you to prepare for a major hd disaster.

its highly likely that this issue will eventually end up corrupting your entire external hd master boot record.
so backup anything you have on their that is irreplacable and continue your efforts to diagnose and fix the problem.

thanks to both malacandra and edvard.

i'm loving how this coding snacks section is going !

i added edvard's tool to coding snacks page (https://www.donation...dingSnacks/index.php)

i'd be happy to add anything by malacandra as well if you need hosting.

Backup Guide / Re: External Harddrive Problems....
« Last post by mouser on June 30, 2005, 08:19 AM »
here's a question:
are you saying that you can copy the file from the external drive to internal, and it works,
and the only trouble is if you *play* it from the external drive then you get the error?

or do you get errors trying to read those files on the external drive no matter what, whether playing or copying.

i can give comment a little though i don't have a perfect solution.

first, your setup sounds good.
the only troubles i have ever had with external hard drives were when using drives > 160gb.
you are using usb2 and a reasonable hard drive so you should NOT be having any troubles.
and i have used quite a few no name enclosures and lots of different hard drives, and i've not had any troubles, so what you are experiencing is not normal.

setting external drive to master sounds right - and it really should not matter what your internal drives i don't think.

the ideal thing would be if you could test the hard drive inside your computer to identify whether the issue is with the hard drive or enclosure; that would be my first recommendation to try if you can.

i happen to have a spare usb enclosure, i could send it to you to test if you send it back afterwards.
but again the easiest first test might be to install the hd internally and see if the problems persist.

maybe someone has better familiarity with hds can help more.

don't give up, i love my external hd - it's a joy to have.
