troubleshooting photoshop freezes,etc:

step 4: " Re-create the Photoshop preferences file. "
would be something i would try - i know i had to do it once with an adobe product.

no, it's fine to ask here.
i was going to suggest you reboot - it sounded like one of those errors that happens when windows runs out of graphics "resources" which can happen if you have too many greedy programs running at same time, but you already tried that. if you have 256mb or less that could also be the cause.

another thing to definitely try, is somewhere there is a way to reset photoshop to its "default" settings, like holding control when you start it or something (i cant remember, search on web).  sometimes they suggest this when things go wrong.

Living Room / New Program (C++ Programmer Toolkit) Added to Site
« Last post by mouser on July 07, 2005, 01:20 PM »
JrDebugLogger

JrDebugLogger is a C++ Programmer's Toolkit. It consists of a set of Open Source, Cross Platform header files for C++ that you can add to your applications in order to support advanced debug-logging, and an optional Microsoft Windows application for capturing debug messages in real time and allowing you to view/sort/search them in an efficient manner.

It's listed under Mouser's Software in the Download section:
https://www.donation...buglogger/index.html

NOTE: this is not a program for end users - it's a toolkit for C++ Programmers, so most people will not have any use for it.

General Software Discussion / Nice review of Flash Projectors
« Last post by mouser on July 07, 2005, 10:29 AM »
I've been looking at Flash Projectors recently; these are tools that can make an exe out of a macromedia swf flash file, and allow some programmatic interactivity so that programmers can make stand alone flash-based applications.

came across this really nice review (and nice magazine in general on flash):

if anyone sees any mods they'd like us to add here, please post.
we also had some talk a while agao about using bigger forum buttons on the site that might be a little more readable; if this is something most people want we could revisit the idea.

Best Text Editor / Re: UltraEdit 11 - Best text editor?
« Last post by mouser on July 07, 2005, 09:39 AM »
Can UltraEdit send the selected text (or the entire active buffer if nothing is selected) to the stdin of an external program and replace it with the stdout of that program?  EditPlus has this 'text filter' option.  I have never seen it work exactly the same way as in EditPlus.  I would swtich to UltraEdit if this is available.

i have written a macro script and tool to do exactly this in ultraedit.
i will post it today or tomorrow at latest.

i uses it when programming to take a selected block and format it using a code formatter and then repaste it into file.
(ue actually has a built in thing to work with astyle for text formatting but its not as flexible and doesnt work well with undo the way my custom solution does).

You can now monitor new posts on this forum using any rss feed reader!

NEW: Add an rss feed for our blog!
https://www.donation...0;sa=blogs;type=rss2
(without images: https://www.donation...s;type=rss2;images=0)

To add an rss feed for just the topics of this official announcement section:
https://www.donation...20;sa=news;type=rss2

To add an rss feed for the new twice-monthly official newsletters:
https://www.donation...10;sa=news;type=rss2

Default rss2 feed for 5 most recent posts on the entire forum:
https://www.donation...ction=.xml;type=rss2

(you can use rss or leave off the entire ;type=rss2 part if you just want xml and not rss)

Or perhaps you just want the last 10 posts on a certain forum:
https://www.donation...2;limit=10;type=rss2

(you can substitute board=2 with board=X where X is the number of the subforum you want to monitor; just click to view that section from the forum and find board=XX in the url window)

Or just want the last 10 TOPICS (not posts):
https://www.donation...10;sa=news;type=rss2

You can also restrict any of those lists to a specific USER by adding u=# to the url, or u=#,#,#,.. to restrict to multiple users posts.

For more help and alternate kinds of feeds you can subscribe to, see this post on the simplemachines forum:

happy to help boro.
as we discussed sourceforge is also a good site for hosting open source stuff, and definitely worth looking into.

if any other freeware authors need some space for their programs just email me.

if a post like jc's doesn't bring a warm feeling to your heart then you need a vacation.

can i add another note: jc donated a free copy of his awesome pecompact tool to donationcoder.com which we use to compress some of our applications, and jc has always been wonderfullly helpful about windows programming whenever i had a question.  he's just a great guy and a friend of this site.

and his site has other programs, both freeware and commercial, and some good programming libraries.

i hopt you all will give bitsum site (http://www.bitsum.com/) a look and support authors like jc who are real human beings who care.

also something else should be mentioned:

don't just do this with regard to donationcoder.com,

many download sites have a way for people to leave comments, and if there is a program you really like (especially a freeware tool), do a nice thing and add a comment at the download site saying so.  freeware programs benefit most from word of mouth and comments like this - it's a nice way to show your appreciation for such programs.

that has to be the most low-key deluxe version mention that i have ever seen.. i didn't even know it existed till you said so and i went back looking for it.  kudos to xnview for making their free version so powerful and free of advertising for the deluxe version.

lack of "negative" function - could anything be less useful?

what is autocrop?

haha - you're right, just a plain save does what i want.. damn goes to show you you can use a program for years and still miss some stuff that others can help you with.

i had a hard time telling difference in speed.

Screenshot Captor / Re: FeatureRequest: FTP Upload
« Last post by mouser on July 06, 2005, 11:04 AM »
it seems like a good idea about the ftp -
i would love to collect a list of free utility programs and commandline calls that might be useful as tools, maybe to provide as an optional download addon, like your ftp command, watermarking, etc.  or at least provide a page showing people some suggested tools they could use.

i will try to figure out a good way to let the user specify tools to run on capture - its not hard to run the tools on capture of course, its providing a nice user interface in the options screen to do it.

i think it probably makes sense to add though, because right now the "on capture" tab of options lets you specify things to do like adding shadow etc., but you cant configure it to only do these on certain hotkeys, and it might be nice to have all of these things set up so you can say which operations to perform on which hotkeys.

Screenshot Captor / Re: FeatureRequest: FTP Upload
« Last post by mouser on July 06, 2005, 10:33 AM »
the tools menu in screenshot captor is designed to let you invoke arbitrary commands, and so would be ideal for this kind of thing.
though it doesnt have features for running multiple commands, etc.

however, what you are asking for is quite simple to write a tiny little commandline program that you could pass the filename on the commandline and it would create that file and invoke ftp on it.

you might be able to call just an ftp commandline and specify filename, host, username, pass all on the commandline in which case you wouldn't even need this.

now to the shortcut:
so it's important to you that you be able to do all this with one shortcut?  its not just that you want to be able to select an ftp command from tool menu, but you want a single shortcut key to take screenshot and then run the command.
if this is important to people then i could add some way to specify tool commands to after certain hotkeys.. but this might be a bit of work if there is no one else who cares about it..

i just discovered that:
1) xnview has different toolbar skins, some of which are quite compact
2) you can customize what buttons to show on toolbar (fantastic!)

a plus for xnview, it will scale picture as you resize window, wheras i can't get irfanview to do this propely, at least in the display modes i use.

i'm also fond of the 1/x display in irfanview that lets you see at a glance how many images are in the current directory and go to a specific place in the list.

Image Manager Shootout / Re: Xnview vs. Irfan View
« Last post by mouser on July 06, 2005, 09:57 AM »
xnview also seems to insist on centering its window on startup on the primary monitor, while irfanview truly remembers the last position of the window (even when i check the option in xnview to remember form position).  am i wrong?

again these seem like trivial issues but when all i use it for is quickly displaying images, im going to be very picky about how i want my images displayed when i double click something, and i dont want it always popping up in front of my file browser, i want it in upper left or wherever i left the window last time.

i'm attaching two pictures to show how xnview uses significantly larger amount of desktop when viewing small images, which is one reason i am still drawn to irfanview for its minimalist interface:

Image Manager Shootout / Xnview vs. Irfan View
« Last post by mouser on July 06, 2005, 06:33 AM »
I thought it might be good to start a thread comparing these two - i have a hard time deciding between them.

I have been using irfanview daily for many years, and have gotten used to its idiosyncrasies.

Using xnview again lately, its a more calming experience - it has an excellent file browser.  the irfanview "thumbnail view" is one of the worst looking things even to be seen on a computer screen.  very win 3.1.

And the options tabs in xnview are easier to navigate and clearer.

But both of them have their pros and cons from my standpoint, in terms of use as quick image viewers.

One of my longstanding real pet peeves with irfanview is its absolute insistence on Save As starting in the last directory you saved into, rather that the current directory holding the picture.  i almost always want to save as in the directory the original image came from.  I've taken to patching my irfanview exe to block this but it is surely annoying.

Xnview has an option to default to original picture location.  very nice.

The thing that has really kept me from using xnview might not be relevant at all to many people, but i use irfanview as a super quick image viewer - i rarely use it to view thumbnails.  and xnview is missing the display mode that i like the most, which is: fit window to image, but fit big images to desktop.

that is, i dont want a big window in the image viewer, i want it as small as the picture (xnview seems designed to run in a bigger window than irfanview, given its toolbar, which makes it a little harder to use on small pictures compared to irfanview); but if its a big image, too big for screen, i want it scaled to a reasonable size without me having to scroll around.

again, this is important precisely because i use this for quickly viewing images all the time - so even a small difference in efficiency effects me. and irfanview still feels like a less obtrusive way to quickly view an image.  and i've also come to love the pngout plugin for irfanview and i don't see it (yet) for xnview.

but i can't deny that xnview feels better organized and less idiosyncratic.

so i guess i'm still feeling conflicted..
