(direct link to nudone's donation page is here: https://www.donation...rs/index_nudone.html, and his image management review is here: https://www.donation...icsViewer/index.html)

AND:

i've also updated tenseiken's ftp server review with the link to his new donation page on donatincoder.com:
https://www.donation...index_tenseiken.html

tenseiken was the very first person to volunteer to do a guest review, and it wouldn't be fair for him to miss out on any donation love.

here's the pointer to his ftp server review in case you missed it:

Actually i've now updated all of the donation pages to highlight the new idea of donating to individual authors, and the info page about it now contains direct links to all individual authors you can donate to.  This page will be updated as new people contribute to the site: http://donationcoder...e/Members/index.html

Living Room / SUPER IMPORTANT NEW SITE FEATURE!!!
« Last post by mouser on July 11, 2005, 04:30 PM »
EXTREMELY IMPORTANT:

Ok guys, we need your help with something new and important.

Today's review by nudone (7/11/05) marks the introduction of a new and criticially important feature on our site.

In an effort to reward and recognize the contribution of people who write content for the site, we are asking you to please, please, consider making a small donation directly to the author of this review.

You will see on the reivew page in the left sidebar and on very top and bottom of the review, a little $ symbol.  Click on that to view nudone's donation page and from there you can make a paypal donation to him very easily.  You will see this on many new reviews and coding snacks, etc.

Even if you only donate $1 that's fine.  and if you don't have a dollar to spare, send him an email telling him how much you like his work.  If it's a review that saves you a lot of time and really strikes your fancy, you might donate a little more.

The point is, we need your help in encouraging an atmosphere and attitude here where we all take seriously the idea of makeing microdonations every once and a while to people who contribute to this site.

This is the future of this site - the way we can grow and bring more people here and encourage more people to add new content.  if you like what we are doing, and the idea of voluntary donations, please put your money where your ideals are and show nudone a little bit of love for his work.  he's been contributing to this site every week with his blog columns, and he's never asked for anything in return.

And to new members who haven't yet joined the site by making a donation - please earmark a couple of the dollars you would normally have donated to the site and save it so you can donate it to individual authors (ps. our donation pages now all mention this).

We need your help to make this new idea work; we're not asking for much, just an occasional dollar or two to support those people who are adding content to the site, to show them how much they are appreciated and demonstrate that this approach to building a volunteer donation-based community can work!

The final review of Image Management Tools is now up, written by our very own guest reviewer, Nudone:
https://www.donation...icsViewer/index.html

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT:

Ok guys, we need your help with something new and important.  this is the second review written by a guest reviewer (the first was tenseiken's excellent review of ftp servers).  today's review was written by nudone (also along with tenseiken a blog columnist here).

But this review marks the introduction of a new feature on our site.

In an effort to reward and recognize the contribution of people who write content for the site, we are asking you to please, please, consider making a small donation directly to the author of this review.

dandersahn, i've posted my technique in a separate thread in this section; i'd be happy to discuss it there and hear any improvements or obsevations, etc.
36612
Here is the combination of MACRO and TOOL that i use to let me select a block of text in a file and process it by an external exe program, capture the output and paste it back replacing the originally selected text.
The key feature of this technique is that it allows you to use an easy undo to undo the change (Ctrl+Z) and preserves your place in the file after the operation.
The sample tool below runs the open source Astyle exe (C++ coder formatter) on the selected block, and is configured to implement whitesmith style c++ indentation (http://en.wikipedia....le#Whitesmiths_style), which i love.

MyAstyle MACRO
-------------------------
InsertMode
ColumnModeOff
HexOff
UnixReOff
Copy
NewFile
Paste
SaveAs "C:\Temp\Astyle.tmp"
CloseFile
RunTool "MyAstyle"
Open "C:\Temp\Astyle.tmp"
SelectAll
Copy
CloseFile
ToggleBookmark
Paste
Open "C:\Temp\Astyle.tmp.orig"
SelectAll
Copy
CloseFile
PreviousBookmarkSelect
ToggleBookmark

MyAstyle TOOL Configuration:
-----------------------------
COMMANDLINE -> D:\Libraries\astyle\astyle.exe --mode=c --indent-brackets --brackets=break --indent=tab --one-line=keep-blocks --one-line=keep-statements C:\Temp\Astyle.tmp
WORKINGDIR  -> C:\Temp\
MENUITEMNAME-> MyAstyle
DONT CHECK "CAPTURE OUTPUT" - this has the exe write output to a file.

if your exe outputs to stdout, then you should check "capture output" and modify the macro and remove the lines from the first Open to the subsequent Closefile.

Best Text Editor / No option to underline misspelled words in UltraEdit?
« Last post by mouser on July 11, 2005, 01:55 PM »
i don't know why i never wanted to do this before -
but you can imagine my surprise when i was editing a text file and found that i couldn't find a way to have UE do red underlining of  misspelled words in a text file.

that really sucks - i'm very much missing this feature :(

Best Text Editor / Re: UltraEdit 11 - Best text editor?
« Last post by mouser on July 11, 2005, 01:54 PM »
yes, that is pretty much what my macro does,
BUT
i had to add some more elaborate stuff to make bookmarks and remove them and jump to them, in order to properly save your place in the file and re-select the selected text, in order to really make the technique work well and be nice to use, and in order to make the undo work properly if you don't like the changes.

i will upload it today as soon as we finish today's review.

i think your list is mostly spot on - and if you read our review you'll see i griped quite a bit about the ad hoc and uneven macro support.
there are some macros for some of the things you mention, but not enough.

i can't remember if you can configure middle mouse to close tabs, but a double-click will close a tab, which i personally find more useable.

great to hear that 1b worked - it will be very interesting to find out why this one works and the one in f&r doesnt.
and this is just what i needed to be able to figure out how to fix.. i will report on my findings soon.

I'd like to put together a screensaver with hundreds of pictures from computer history.

so, pictures of old computers, old famous software boxes or advertisements, etc.
anything the will make you smile from the history of computing.

I'm not just talking about really old stuff, it can be semi-recent computers too, but mainly should focus on fun stuff from the past.

So, i need some volunteers to help by sending me pictures.
I'm looking for a few volunteers who are willing to go find lots of pictures (as opposed to 100 people sending me 1 each, since that never works).  pictures of, or from, old computer magazines would be nice too.

Please keep track of some info about the website or source you got the picture from, so we can credit them (and credit you).

The final screensaver/wallpaper utility with all the pictures submitted will be made available for all to download of course.

Official Announcements / New Visitors to Our Forum - Please Read This First
« Last post by mouser on July 11, 2005, 04:44 AM »
DonationCoder.com is something of a hybrid site.  We are the official home page of some exclusive software that we have developed ourselves, and we are a review site that makes comprehensive recommendations of the best third-party software in the marketplace, including open source and free software.

The really unusual aspect of the site is that it is funded entirely by voluntary user donations.

Everyone is welcome on this forum; you do not have to donate to our site in order to participate on this forum.

However, we implore you to please consider becoming a charter member of our community by making a donation of any amount.

Your donation will grant you some additional privileges, including:
  • early access to new versions of our software, and new beta applications
  • huge discounts on the 3rd party software that wins our review awards
  • a chance to win free software donated by companies
  • early access to our software reviews
  • access to member-only sections of the forum

We rely on donations from people like you to keep this site growing and ad-free!

jacques0,

i hope you aren't getting sick of rebooting your computer yet :)

can you try these two:
http://donationcoder...m/Beta/Project1a.zip
http://donationcoder...m/Beta/Project1b.zip

what we want to see is if these little tools, which just ask you to hit ctrl+alt+T
disable your other shortcuts like f&r does.  so the important thing is to test and make sure your program shortcut hotkeys work, then run this test, hit ctrl+alt+T to verify it works, then (exit or dont) and see if your normal shortcut programs work.

if we can find a hotkey component that works and leaves your normal shortcuts intact then i will be able to identify the cause.
if these all fail, well then its a bigger problem.

ps. i tried reproducing the bug on windows98 and the shortcut hotkeys still worked, so the problem you are having is not happening on all windows98 machines (though i did notice that my last build of f&r needed a change to run on win98 or else it complained of missing user32.dll function, so thats a good thing to discover).

i await the results of the test when you get a chance, thanks again :)

Site/Forum Features / Re: RSS Feeds for DonationCoder.com and this Forum
« Last post by mouser on July 10, 2005, 08:41 PM »
welcome to the site jason,

your request would be satisfied if we set up a special section of the forum for "official announcements",
like new reviews being posted, new software being released.
i.e. just the rare occasional official announcement.

probably not a bad idea; i think i will set this up unless people would prefer i don't.

the other solution would be to use a program like website watcher (see our review on webpage change monitors https://www.donation...bWatchers/index.html), and have it monitor the reviews archive page or front page of the site.

well what i wanted to confirm, it sthat its the hotkey component i use (which you seem to be saying is the case), rather than anything specific in f&r.  now to try to find an alternate component.

it's a good question kevin, i'm really not sure, except that maybe the edit box that accepts and captures what you type is somehow not programmed to intercept windows key.
