Find And Run Robot / Re: Feature Request v2 - text replacement
« Last post by mouser on July 15, 2005, 03:16 PM »
hi ampa, i like your avatar btw :)

yes i agree, we don't want to make it try to do everything.
but i am willing to entertain things that keep in the spirit of super-fast keyboard operations..
so the idea of being able to hi break key and type "myinfo" and then enter and having it expand to paste in my name, address, and phone into my current text editor or whatever editor i am using is something that i think would fit with this.

when command functions are added it will be very easy to extend the program to run 3rd party independent scripts and commands, so that we can leave the program doing just the core stuff, but make it easy for user to trigger other programs to do other things.

so in other words, i agree in principle, but i think we can expand F&R's purpose a little more broadly than just a launcher, and focus on keyboard-maniac's tool for efficient quick operations like launching apps / scripts / triggering little mini helpers like text pasting, etc.  plus launching things like web/dictionary searches, etc.  especially things that call for displaying a menu of choices - i think thats going to be a nice strength of F&R, being able to display a numbered lists of menu choices associated with a typed command.

but i do like that there are F&R users who want to keep it focused - i think this is a good thing and don't want it to become a program that tries to do everything a little and nothing completely.

jibz plugin is written and he gave his copy of thebat! as a gift to another member.
but we still have 1 more copy available to give out as a prize..
36554
this would be extremely easy to do with a hotkey and tray based tool..
definitely something doable this weekend.

any clipboard apps already have a hotkey to report this?
i'm sure you could make an autoit script to do this, just copy to clipboard and count clipboard characters and report.  any of our autoit experts want to do this, or should somene just whip up a little c++ util for it?

Note that we regularly move older requests into the "Older Requests" section.
this doesn't mean they are not still good ideas to work on, it's just to help keep the place organized.

ps hot folders is another really good one:

and the author also make a nice tray tool, and another launch tool.
and he's a nice guy too.

i think it's something worth adding - i'd just like to hear what people want from it.  would be nice to hear from those who really use these tools to get an idea of what the real functionality that they use is.

and of course, let's not get into the rut of just looking at other programs and implementing what they have - we need to think outside the box and come up with new features not yet thought of by anyone else..

i think this is something probably worth adding - i don't have much experience with text replacement tools so i'll have to learn what they actually do first.

customized hotkey will be in next version, probably very very soon.

i really hope those of you who currently prefer other similar programs will help me by describing things that you like better in the other programs - it will help me make F&R as good as i can.

:)

i'll just note that Find&Run Robot, made by me and on this site, is a direct competitor to AppRocket :)

not to knock approcket, just to let you know that you might want to try the freeware Find and Run Robot on this site.

ps. the help file for F&R robot lists AppRocket and a ton of other similar tools.

ps2. we are currently discussing features to add to F&R in the forum dedicated to it, and i am keenly interested in hearing any features of AppRocket that you would like to see in F&R.

Site/Forum Features / Re: How to Change Privacy Options in your Forum Profile
« Last post by mouser on July 14, 2005, 11:59 AM »
This would be also a good opportunity to remind people that by default when you sign up you are listed in the "Visitor" group.

Your group is listed after "Position: " on the main Profile page, and at the top of every forum page in the User Info box at top.

After you have made a donation to the site you should be listed as a "Charter Member" "Supporting Member".

If you have made a donation (or if you have contacted me and been told i was upgrading your account), but you are still listed as a "Visitor" then don't panic, it just means i missed you somehow.  send me a private message through the forum or email me and i'll take care of it right away.
36563
i got an email from someone who didn't like that people could see their "online status" at the bottom of the main forum page, where it shows people currently browsing the board.

i thought this would be a good opportunity to let people know how they can turn this off and control other privacy issues.

When you are logged into the forum, click the "PROFILE" button on top, this will bring you to your forum profile where there are many settings you can adjust.

In the left sidebar you will see there are actually many different pages in your profile, including:
  • Account Related Settings
  • Forum Profile Information
  • Look and Layout Preferences
  • Notifications and Email
  • Personal Message Options

If you dont want people to be able to see when you are online, go to the "Account Related Settings" page, and uncheck "Show others your online status?"

How to never receive an email from us ever:

On the "Notifications and Email" page you can turn off all messages from us - so you'll never get another weekly newsletter from donationcoder.com, if you don't want to receive them, though i request people leave this enabled unless they are really opposed to it, as its the way we would let members you know about imporant announcements.

You'll also see an option for "Hide email address from public?" which is set by default.

I should also remind you that if you haven't done so yet, go to the "Forum Profile Information" page and pick out an avatar (image) for your forum identity so people have a fun picture to associate with you.

lifehacker looks really nice, i may add that to links page.

how's this for irony, i followed a post on lifehacker to Yahoo Desktop SEARCH.
looks nice, i went to the forum for it, 1500 posts.  cool.

http://messages.yaho...297&mid=10000000

wait...
what's missing from the yahoo desktop search forum...
i'll give you 10 points if you guess correct:   a search function

that's right.
you cannot search the yahoo desktop search forum.

now come one, even if you wanted to design a forum without search functionality you'd have to work damn hard at it.. how did they pull off such a think?

General Review Discussion / Any volunteers for Next Review (7/25 - 8/1) ?
« Last post by mouser on July 13, 2005, 03:13 PM »
the most requested categories so far in the poll are:

hierarchical notes programs - this is going to be a very difficult review, only those with the time to do this properly should volunteer.
file explorer replacement - same thing, very difficult review and likely to be very controversial
archive management tools - much easier i think, not too many big names (winrar, winzip) and some good freeware ones (7zip)

Coding Snack Guidelines / GETTING REWARDED FOR AUTHORING CODING SNACKS !
« Last post by mouser on July 13, 2005, 03:03 PM »
authors that write coding snacks will have a donation page made for them, where people who like their program can donate directly to the authors PayPal account (so if you intend to write a coding snacks freeware program please sign up at PayPal or another donation site).

we will also reward authors who write coding snacks with free copies of programs that are donated to us, that are particularly useful to programmers.  we still have a few copies of VmWare, BB FlashBack Pro, and Camtasia 3 (all very valuable programs) to give out.

welcome kitty :)

i've updated all of the donation pages to highlight the new idea of donating to individual authors, and the info page about it now contains direct links to all individual authors you can donate to.  This page will be updated as new people contribute to the site: http://donationcoder...e/Members/index.html

Find And Run Robot / Re: Feature Request v2 - appearance and name?
« Last post by mouser on July 13, 2005, 06:41 AM »
well i tend to agree..
rest assured no skin support will be added until all other features are implemented.. it's just an idea i wanted to throw open for discussion to get an idea of how many people would like such a thing, and it would only be implemented if it could be done without impacting performance, and as a completely optional feature, etc.

the reason i have become more open to the idea is that while working on the Cheat Sheeter app, i used this excellent free, well known toolbar component toolbar2k, and its has a completely native win feel, but does support optional skins, so i realize skins can be added in a way that will not compromise the ability to run the program in plain normal windows mode for those of us that prefer that.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Feature Request v2 - file explorer/browser mode?
« Last post by mouser on July 13, 2005, 06:35 AM »
yes, this is definitely an idea that i am considering..
it might work like this, an "expandable" (or configurable) 'preview' panel.
so that when you click on an item (whether folder or file), it would show in the preview panel.
in the case of clicking on a folder, it would show the contents of that folder (or locate the folder in a folder tree and show the contents?)
if you clicked on a file, it would preview the contents of the file (or locate the parent folder in a folder tree and select the file and show where it is?)

this is an intriguing possibility for sure.. and we should talk about it more because it's possible that if this request is desired, maybe all shell operations (dragging out of window, right clicking for full context menu), would be more easily handled as operations from this panel rather than from main results panel.
