General Software Discussion / Re: Clever copy
« Last post by Contro on February 20, 2011, 08:02 AM »
I try to explain better now :

I have a folder to copy to another folder  (folder 1 to folder 2)
Folder 1 contains files shortcuts and folder shortcuts.
In the copy process i wish in folder 2 :
a) substitute any file shorcut for the file pointing to.
b) substitute (copy) any folder shorctut for the folder pointing to.

In other words : Folder 2 don't contains shortcuts.

For me is useful too if I can copy the folder 1 in folder 2 and after select the shorcuts to transform in the files or folders they are pointing to.

I think this is a difficult program to make in the full version because may exists circular processes and scan a shortcut folder that may contains other shortcut folder or shortcut files . Or even a shortcut folder inside the original folder pointing exactly to that folder.....

I  am not a programmer but in autohotkey or autoit language the only command seems to be : FileGetShortcut()

So the clever soft may need decide some things before make the copy from folder 1 to folder 2.

Suppose my second real case : I use an image inventory of all things of my house. First I photograph everything by room. Every room is a folder. Then I classify by themes : books, kitchen, textil, or even combined criterias. And use shortlinks to those images .  The real things comes complex if I tell you that the photos are taken ordinarily by date and are saved in my imagen hard drive.

So :
I have my images in the O: disk of images
Folder for my rooms in the Y: data disk full of shortcuts pointing to the original images
Folder for my themes in the Y: data disk : books, videos, cd collection, wine bottles, etc full of shortcuts pointing to the original images.

Now I want to show my inventory system copying the inventory folder (containing the folder for my rooms, and the folder for my themes) to an external disk, usb pendrive, cd or dvd.

That is one of the reasons I would like to know a script to transform the windows shortcut in the file is pointing to.

 :-\

P.D. And the miracle of the clever copy process would be that the program decides where put soft-links again. By example : put the original images in the rooms folders, and in the themes folders put shortcuts to the rooms folders.........
But I hope we can make simplier and in the easiest way.

Not sure exactly what you are after Contro.

:(  Is not what I am looking for. Seems very interesting for open the container folder of the original file of the shorcut.

I would like a script to click over a file shortcut and replace him with the real file.

Clever copy
I would in the most simple way.
I usually create folders that contains shortcuts to other files and folders in many hard disks. Even in net harddisks.

I would like one of these options :

1) Convert from a folder all shortcuts to the physical corresponding file. Just copying the file.
2) A clever copy program from one folder to another substituting in the target folder all shorcuts with the physical files or a copy of the hard-links.
3) A super clever program to decide in the target folder real files or physical files and shortcuts corresponding in the target files to that real files.

Do you know something to do this ?

Best Regards

I am using Thunderbird Portable in a network.
I have installed TBP in a folder in one of the pc's
In the other one I have created a shortcut to execute when I need.
All goes well.
Multiple instances are not permitted because of the data security and synchronization.
So when I forgot to close the program in the other pc i can't open in local pc.

What I need is an interactive program to close TB remotely.
I would too be able to see all the running processes in one terminal from the other. And in general have knowledge and control over the other pc in the most simplest way.

Do you know a program to do this interactly . Not PSTools.

Go to the View menu, and choose "Flat View" - there are three options, so you'll need to find the one you like.

The help is pretty good, and the support forum is here:
http://www.gpsoft.com.au/Support.html

They know a lot more than I do!

Well. Directory Opus is too much for anyone.
A nice piece of software.
Someday not very far all the advantages of directory opus will be incorporated to last version of windows.

In the present moment I recommend this program to everyone to use everyday.
This is not my situation. So I will try with the freeware SpaceSniffer.

In Folder options of Directory Opus how can i propose several folders (how can I separate or something)

I try with , ... ; ... : ... / ... with no results.

Is it permitted to use several folders real or with the use of wild cards only ?

How can I configure the listing of a folder to know or see the sizes of the subfolders ?

I put an email to Uderzo. i think small folders are not considered. But my folder contains two important dwg files. So I think is not a good space sniff.

SpaceSniffer accomplish perfectly well his function, but I think is not initially prepared to filter folders or save a filter over a folder with subfolders and give parameters about that.

I don't understand, but I think don't give me all subfolders in the example i try over my pc. .......Empty folders don't appear. But I have one occupied and also don't appear.
I'll try comment with uderzo.
Best Regards

The filter is only in affirmative way (inclusions), not exclusions I think.

I think you might be able to do what you want with SpaceSniffer.  You can certainly exclude files with the Filter, but, the Attributes list doesn't contain the Directory Attribute, so I'm not certain.  Perhaps you could contact Uderzo to ask.  However, at least for files, look at the unfiltered vs. filtered screenshots below.

[Edit 2011-01-09, 20:55-] TreeSize [/Edit] looks like it can do what you want, but, you have to have one of the payware versions, either Personal or Pro.  Filtering isn't listed in the free version.  And it may not be worth paying if you have already have adequate features in your file manager.

I will comment
This is not a operation i am going to do everyday. So I need a freeware.

Nobody knows ?  :(

I think something like this may help me :
"File Manipulator

File Manipulator is the ultimate file/folder manipulation utility. It allows you to create self-contained Droplets to Move, Copy, Delete, and Rename files/folders, Change File Types and Creators, Log files, and more. You can limit which files are manipulated using a variety of powerful criteria, including Size, Label, Name, Attributes, Comments, Image Type, Version, etc. File Manipulator and the Droplets created by it run natively on Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X."

But for windows.

The idea of conditions seems perfect.

I am going mad because the behaviour of dropbox and syncless to synchronize several folders. Syncless writes changes control inside each folder affects.
The name of these folders are : .syncless (hidden) and _synclessArchive.

I would like to control the size of a group of folders "discounting" the size of these folders : .syncless and _synclessArchive.
Really I only need to select a windows folder and determine its size discounting all the .syncless and _synclessArchive may contain inside it.

I hope you can help me.

Example : the folder Fol1 contains ten subfolders (two of them are those of syncless) and the other eight contains four subfolders each one (two of them are those of syncless). I wan to know the total size of the folder Fol1 discounting the size of the syncless type folders.....

Best Regards

Of course any other program with more possibilities is welcome.

Nice Program. But perhaps is better more automation with no command line.
