Living Room / Re: Startups and the Big Lie
« Last post by wraith808 on August 25, 2015, 09:56 AM »
Often it feels to me like economic success is one big pyramid scheme... Here's an article about the central role lying plays in the startup model where companies raise billions based on a mirage of get-rich-quick success they create.

Money begets money.  That's a seminal truth.  I would agree to you that it's as corrupt as you make it out to be- if not for one thing.  Haven't been in that situation, it's expected.  When we were doing it, we cut to the bone, and asked for only what we needed to get going.  And found that what someone had told us was true- scale matters.  If you ask for only a little money, they expect you to fail, and expect that the idea isn't worthy of consideration.  It's a system that those that you are asking for money made.  You're playing by their rules.  And their rules require you to lie.

I agree.  Details seem a bit sketchy.
He was quick on the draw.

It was only penciled in at the time.

Canvasing the comments has proven quite interesting.

I still wouldn't draw any conclusions from it. I'd wait until we get the complete picture.

I see the fountain of wisdom in that penning.

I think it's time that somebody here took the lead.

All is well that pens well.

That's penning review.

Weird. I hope I don't have any games that use SecuROM and SafeDisc. I haven't delved much into my game collection since installing Windows 10 on my machine.

There are some ON STEAM that use SecuROM.  I don't purchase those.  And I'm glad.

A couple of examples of games on my wishlist that I've held out from purchasing:

Tron: Evolution

Batman: Arkham Asylum did - they removed it from the GOTY (I'd already purchased it somewhere else because of that)

Blood Bowl Legendary Edition did... but they removed it, so I bought it.

PC Gaming's Wiki has a list of SecuROM games (and other DRM Games) on Steam.

Well, there's also
Maybe Lintalist (Announcement on DC) is worth investigating for those searching for a FOSS tool?

Well, there's also Auspex and Ethervane Echo if you're going there.

But I think, to be fair, you can't really compare the feature set.  If you don't need that feature set, then those are options too.

^^ Yes, I saw that too.
I made a "request for invite". Making a "request for invite" doesn't seem to get responded to though. Message says they are maxed out on invites, or something.
It's a bit opaque. I wonder how many users they actually have, or if it's all a sham? Probably never be told.

I have an account, but the prior restrictions made me toss it when they originally opened, and the fact that the interface was archaic, and very much slow.

It seems better now.  Did you request for an invite recently?  I have a link for immediate account creation with 500MB of storage.  I'll PM it to you.

I cannot help but wonder how much of a deal this really is.
The price tag of $150 is totally ridiculous, and even 30 bucks seems very steep, considering the many free alternatives.

The description on their website just mentions the usual run-of-the-mill features.
Do you - or anybody else - know what advantages it offers over free stuff, like say, PhraseExpress?
http://www.phraseexp...ess.com/features.htm

1. PhraseExpress isn't really free, unless you're aiming for only personal use, i.e. We give away the PhraseExpress productivity boost free-of-charge to personal users

http://www.phraseexp...m/docs11/09/shop.php

2. Both products are aimed at the medical transcription market.  That's a very high priced and revenue/income generating market, where productivity is paid for- as long as its accurate.  If you're in that market, then the price for either of the competing versions, i.e. professional version of PhraseExpress at $140 or professional version of PhraseExpander at $150 will help so much in income, that that is a paltry price.

3. The price for the commensurate comparison products is $10 difference.  You're looking at an apples to oranges comparison.  Apples to apples, they are very much similar products, so much so that there have been some pretty ugly wars between the two- some even on this board.

That said, they have two different marketing strategies.  With PhraseExpress they give away a limited feature set, and as you use the expanded features, it converts into trialware.  With PhraseExpander, they sell a lesser version that is arguably better than the free version, but pretty close if not a little better than the commensurate PhraseExpress offering to show the same to users that might need the pro version, but probably don't.

I used PhraseExpander when it was Direct Access and it was a solid product.  I've also used PhraseExpress, and it is a solid product.  I also dislike the... attitudes of both companies, though NagarSoft is a little more palatable than Bartels, which has made me migrate away from both, and I now use software specifically for developers rather than using this to take the place of the same, i.e. Resharper, replacing CodeRush in my arsenal..  However, that is personal bias.  If you need the functionality, then yes, it is worth it.

As an aside, Breevy is also pretty comparable to both lower offerings.

And to both developers, this was kept as unbiased as possible in the comparison of the products, 'just in case' you happen to drop by.

DC Gamer Club / Windows 10 won't run games with commonly hated DRM platforms

Windows 10 won't run games with SafeDisc or Securom DRM

Microsoft has announced that it will block games utilizing SafeDisc or Securom DRM on Windows 10, citing security concerns owing to a lack of support by the companies that made them.

To add insult to injury, SafeDisc is saying that Microsoft should have been the one to do the updates.

But I do like your box!  But... why are they advertising the video as ATI?  And I have had problems before with workstation graphics for non-workstation use.  You get strange errors sometimes...

Thanks. I'm not sure what you're driving at on the ATi part, the base configuration came with no video card. So I picked the ATi W5100 out of their available line up, because that's what came in the Z420 workstation I have at the office ... And I've been running ATI video since XP x64.

Oh... I was just saying because ATI doesn't exist anymore.  In fact, if you go to the AMD website, it's advertised as AMD.  It was just idle curiosity.

http://www.amd.com/e...ion/firepro-3d/5100#

http://www.anandtech...00-w5100-w4100-w2100

They're nice cards.  It's just my own bias against using WS cards for Non-WS work from my work in a former life as a QA analyst.  Consumer appplications sometimes get weird results on WS grade cards in my experience.  But that was mostly for multimedia... and just, again, idle musings.

I communicated with the developer, and he was very nice!  I downloaded it- and saw what you were saying, and I'll be trying it a bit more, and probably buying it.

^ Same here.  At one point, I was building computers for friends, family...  then I started doing it only if they paid me.  Then I switched to doing it for myself only.  Then I only cracked them open to upgrade.  Now I'm at the point of someone needing to pay me in order to get me to crack open my own case.  I really hate hardware now.

But I do like your box!  But... why are they advertising the video as ATI?  And I have had problems before with workstation graphics for non-workstation use.  You get strange errors sometimes...

General Software Discussion / Re: Chrome Cleanup Tool

I was having some 'Aw, snap' errors and some cursory googling led me to Chrome Cleanup Tool and was wondering if anyone here have any experiences with this Chrome Cleanup Tool?

I have.  It does exactly what it says.  Which is more than you probably think it does.  It basically returns Chrome to the just installed state.  Everything.  Including profiles, bookmarks... everything.  I thought it was just to remove bad things.  But it removes EVERYTHING.  Can you tell I was a bit pissed when I used it?

half of my "seriously?" was because I found it unlikely that you didn't remember Splinter. The author got quite some attention 3 years ago when he launched Splinter here on DonationCoder's forum - some of it because he talked like an lifestyle advert, instead of a pedagogic instructor - and some of it because it was (is!) very difficult for him to explain what the program actually does. His homepage: http://spli-stuff.blogspot.co.uk/

modified:
Oh, of course: His program is a system for grouping the desktop icons.

Unlikely as it is, I didn't, and even with your prompting, still don't.  I don't read everything on the forums.  I go to the show unread posts view... and if there's too many, in many cases just blindly mark them read.  I figure if it's something i want to see, it will come up again.  And I just don't have the time to read everything.

So, I've been using Ghostery for a while, and now I think that might change.

I noticed something called Ghostery Privacy Notice, and wondered what it was.. then started investigating.  I didn't like what I found.

Lifehacker summarizes it better than I can.

http://lifehacker.co...-data-to-a-514417864

So I've started trying Disconnect.  They seem more upfront... so I'm going to trial it for a while.  But figured I'd post the information, at least.

And I'm feeling pretty good about it after this sensational uninstall page:

Can someone explain it?  I'm not going to look at a video just to see about software...

^seriously?

Seriously.  When someone just drops a video, says this satisfies your needs, doesn't include a link to the software site.... yeah, I skip it.  The only reason I even asked was that it came up again.

WinCatalog 2015 might be worth a purchase/trial: (I'm thinking about it...)
This programme seems to be continually updated
Paid upgrade seems to be only every few years (if you own 2011 version it is still a free upgrade to 2015 version).

2015 version (including updates - "for noncommercial use") currently on offer for $14.99 this week via SharewareOnSale.

I actually have a serial to it, and put it aside after purchasing (yes, I'm very wasteful).

From what I remember when I used it, it's really disk cataloging software, where I was looking for file cataloging.  You couldn't break things up into different catalogs on a particular disk.  It cataloged the whole disk, which wasn't what I needed.  It seemed to be aimed at those that had several disks (either HDD or DVD, etc) and wanted to know what was on each particular physical disk without having to insert them.  Useful, certainly, but not what I was looking for.  Not sure if it's changed substantially since then- looking through my registrations, this was admittedly back in 2007.

I was returning to the first post of the thread. I don't know anything about Splinter, went to their page and it looks complicated, far more than I need. As for fences, correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears to leave all your program icons showing, it just corrals them into groups set apart by shading. I want ONLY the group icons to show. Then when one is clicked, a compact pick list of PROGRAM (or document) icons and/or labelled buttons appears. Not an entire window of icons spaced far apart on a white background, as Windows explorer does. Really not a radical idea.

That is incorrect- you can see that from my simple use that it doesn't just space them apart, but allows you to set them where you wish.  You can create your own fences to show icons which can be clicked to launch said icon.  You can also use the fences to show a portal into a folder, or many folders.  You can hide them at will or show them by double clicking on the desktop.  You can also scroll the fences so that you scroll between pages, and auto organize or hide icons as they are created.  Quite a bit more than what you say; my uses were just not that complicated.  It, however, does not show folders as menus, other than in the actual fence in the case of a desktop portal, i.e. it drills down.  You can however, pair it with something like 7stacks or StandaloneStack so that each one invokes one of your stacks.

FencesExample2.png

FencesExample3.png

7StackDialog.png

Some examples I whipped up quickly.  The only things that I've noticed is that (a) with 7stacks, it constrains the location of the popup to the bottom of the screen, and (b) with standalone stack, it actually runs a new version of the application for each stack opened.  They're small... but that's messy IMO>

Also for future reference, if you think the thread has gone off of what you want to ask or you want to add more, it might be clearer to just make a comment to add to the thread stating that you'd tried the options and what your results are and how they failed in that capacity.
3674
I'm not sure whom that last post was aimed at.  I was asking for an explanation of Splinter.

As far as your specifications, fences does that.  Right click on desktop, drag the area to the desired size, and in the right click menu, create fence.  Then drop your icons there.
