General Software Discussion / Re: Drive Splitter
« Last post by nudone on December 30, 2005, 05:31 AM »
I don't see what you have against putting your whole hard drive in a zip archive split into volumes of just under 5GB then burning them onto some DVD-RWs

does that actually work for you when restoring your operating system - i was under the impression that there are parts of the drive that would not copy under such a method (?) or at the least it would be impractical when trying to restore the drive...

how are you going to run an archive program within windows whilst actually trying to restore the partition/drive that windows is running from at the same time - it isn't going to work. or do you run your archive program from DOS or a boot disk.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Blackbox for windows - shell replacement
« Last post by nudone on December 30, 2005, 04:16 AM »
please excuse my ignorance but are there any advantages to using something like Litestep or other shells rather than the native operating system shell?

i'm, sort of, keen to try something that will make my system look 'cool' and 'dark'. currently i'm using the 'noire' skin within 'windowblinds' - looks nice but i appreciate that it must be taking up system resources (maybe insignificant) so i'm wondering would a shell that looked similar be a better path to take.

i think you must have tried this one already Carol but i'll mention it anyway - it works for me (haven't had the bottle to try restoring the raid setup yet though).

it doesn't look too pretty but i think it does everything you could want ???

alfaclock works for me - nice find there brotherS.

i think TClockEx works okay depending on how you've already got your windows appearance settings, i.e. whether it's classic view or not. am i right - maybe it's just how it works on my system.

(i'm just talking about how it blends in.)

i've got a similar tool on my shelf right now. i borrowed it off of a friend about 2 years ago and have yet to figure out how to use it - i think my friend has forgotten that i borrowed it (i'll return it to him after i've got it to work).

the reason i post this reply is to ask for assistance on how to use the darn thing.

does anyone know what the UK average charges are for domestic electricity? i need to input the data into the tool. the electrical company i pay the bill to are of no help - they state several charges for various times of the day in a totally illogical manner, i.e. two different rates for peak, two different rates for off peak, two different rates for night use, etc, etc - total gibberish.

sounds like something nasty is on the machine somewhere. ad-aware isn't guaranteed to find ALL nasties so running a few other utils ought to help.

well, it took about a week to work out what i wanted - most of the guess work was done from just reading the star rated products in various magazines. then i bought the whole lot from one computer shop except for the monitor which i ordered online.

well, these things are going to be a lot cheaper by this time next year. i didn't realise Dell were doing a 24" monitor too, looks like they are going to be everywhere soon.

er, could this be the reason, lots of warez files are named with the '.' instead of spaces - can't honestly remember but i think newsgroup attachments are also named this way.

i wrote about 'ninotech copy path' that did something along the lines of the request.

i'm happy to report that all is well with the new monitor - it almost made me weep when i saw it spring into life. having a quick go on 'far cry' almost made me orgasm (not joking).

anyone considering this sort of monitor should just bite the bullet and get one - i can only liken it to sitting in front of a cinema screen. it makes all LCD televisions look like a complete joke - and i mean ALL. comparing it to a plasma screen doesn't do it any kind of justice either.

look, just sell the kids or remortgage the house and go and buy one - this really is the future of entertainment.

i daren't turn it on to be honest - whilst i leave it unplugged i've no idea how many dead pixels are going to be on the screen. not sure what i'll do if there are a few.

er, it's not looking good is it - maybe it will have to be next year.

i was wondering about whether to keep the two 19" crt monitors i've already got or buy a new LCD 21" widescreen or maybe even buy two 19" LCDs instead.

i've solved the problem - just ordered one of these 'Eizo s2410w 24" widescreen LCD monitor' http://www.eizo.com/...lcd/S2410W/index.asp.

the actual visible display area is an insane 518.4mm × 324.0 mm.

i've been told that there's a 99% chance it will be here tomorrow - can't really see that happening but if it does you'll hear me screaming my head off with glee.

will i be going for raid on the next pc i build - it looks doubtful doesn't it. but then again, i've yet to really put things to any kind of test so maybe i'll be pleasantly surprised - even if this raid 0 knocks a few seconds of loading in a few programs or booting windows i'll be happy. such is the length of time i spend in front of the computer any kind of speed increase will be appreciated.

roll on the day that solid state data storage becomes the norm (or whatever it will be called).
