Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Paste 'n Go...
« Last post by mouser on July 21, 2005, 07:04 AM »
I'm using a database and it actually wouldn't be too hard to add capture of all clipboard formats (images, html, rtf, etc.) if this is something people wanted - i really use these tools only for text, but i can see a case for being more flexible.

awesome -
skrommel, may i make a suggestion: adding a version # to the comments at the top of your scripts would make it easier for people to make sure they always had latest version.

i'm quite interested to hear if anyone can come up with any unique suggestions for CHS..

i got a little carried away with the text formatting options; i'd really like to keep the program easy to use.  but i'd love to hear some unique suggestions for useful features.

id be happy to add it -
there are plenty of other clipboard tools out there, some free, so i figure the real way we can have fun with this one is to add some good features.

actually chs already has a little button that will try to auto paste the currently selected clip into the window that was open before showing CHS, but it could be easier to launch the program and select it.

to test though, go to your application and put the cursor where you want, then hit ctrl+alt+V, select the clip, and push the button that looks like a clipboard with green arrow leaving it.

i know its not ideal for what you want though, so lets figure out the best way to do it.

simplest way i guess would be to emulate clipomatic - you hit a hotkey and it pops up menu of recent clips, showing a little of each one; you press the number or letter and it pastes it in, plus maybe an option at the bottom for opening full dialog for more detailed examining of clips to paste.  or can we improve it?

one of the things i was never happy about was the search in clipmate, so i added a really cute easy search system in CHS.  just type some words and it auto filters clips that have those words in them.

i am definitely going to try to add the auto mouse copy on select as an option, and also the as-u-type dynamic object speller; both will be optional of course, as is the core history functionality of CHS.  so that if you like, you can disable everything and just have it copy to its buffer when you explicitly request via the hotkey.

i have just updated the first beta release of Clipboard Help+Spell, a full featured clipboard utility.
https://www.donation...pandspell/index.html

i plan to try to add in the next week or so both automatic copy-on-select method,
AND the dynamic spell checking seen in as-u-type, so hopefully we can give some of these expensive shareware clipboard tools a run for their money.

i'd very much appreciate more suggestions for features, but we should do it in the new forum section for Clipboard Help+Spell here:
https://www.donation...index.php?board=49.0, and we should leave this thread closed for now.

Living Room / Re: Scripting utility suggestions?

there is definitely some snobber in programming circles regarding the hierarchy of programming languages.

the RAD languages like delphi and the scripting/macro languages can sometimes cause hardcore programmers to roll their eyes.

much of it is just jelousy - a feeling of frustration that if it takes us 1 month to make a proper text editor, you shouldn't be able to just drop an icon on a form and having a fully functioning program.

my feeling is that you use the right tool for the job, but have some concern for the underlying structure of the solution.

i tend to use Borland C++ Builder for big gui windows projects (its like delphi), just because its so much faster to build GUI stuff.  it would take 10x longer to write some of this stuff in windows MFC stuff.

the fair complaint that can be lodged against such scripting/RAD languages, and you see it leveled against VB programmers all the time, is not so much that the language itself is inherently bad, but that the people who use it tend to have a very shallow grasp of programming.  and this is sometimes true.  because these tools make it so easy to jump right in and make a program that looks real, it allows less experienced programmer to play in the same arena as the big boys, and sometimes that results in programs that look ok at first glance but are horrible messy and buggy, etc.

there are also languages like perl which are super powerful but which some programmers like me thing are evil just because they seem to promote horrible habits (its funny because this is the complaint usually lodged against BASIC, but perl has a much better reputation).

bottom line: use the right tool for the job and don't let people convince you you're not doing real programming.  it's just a matter of scale.

I'm just blown away with skrommel's results with AutoHotKey in the coding snacks section; it's free and clearly has a kick ass community behind it, who are clearly skilled and willing to help.  AutoIt similarly.

got this in email today, 20% off microolap stuff:

i'm a real fan of microolap; great real people working for them.

Unfinished Requests / Re: IDEA: Get current directory

a reasonable compromise might be to modify it so that you can select any FILE and hit the hotkey to bring up a dos command box in the directory where the file lives - you'd still have to select something, but you wouldnt have to go up to the parent folder first so it would save some time.

sorry i've been so slow with a post about the coding snacks weekend we just had - i've been working around the clock on nothing but the new clipboard tool - as any programmer will tell you it's hard to pull yourself away once you start a new project.

skrommel was on fire this weekend, producing a number of extremely cool AutoHotKey scripts which will be going up on the coding snacks download page tonight.  It was a wonder watching him solve these requests like little puzzles.

in recognition for his contribution this week, we have decided to give him a prize, on behalf of everyone on this site.  skrommel please let us know whether you want a free copy of VmWare Desktop Workstation, or BB FlashBack Pro, or Techsmith Camtasia 3, or whether you prefer to wait for the next donated software we get.  If you'd like to re-donate it to someone else you may do that as well.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Feature Request Thread

Perhaps an option to scale extra weighting given to more recently used files?

my thinking exactly - it's been on the todo list for a while and it's surely something worth adding.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Feature Request v2 - Speeding up searches?
« Last post by mouser on July 20, 2005, 10:46 AM »
yeah, currently it will search it twice if its the subset of another folder; windows internal cacheing makes this happen quite fast though.  but it would be nice to avoid that.

Find And Run Robot / Re: address bar replacement
« Last post by mouser on July 20, 2005, 05:49 AM »
i've thought about this -
i almost made f&r a proper toolbar.. but the problem is that it needs more space vertically for displaying results, and then you have to ask if its really worth the effort.  if there was no results window then this would be much more valuable mode of operation.

i hear what you're saying.
im going to release a quick new version this week with hotkey configurability.
and then add new stuff incrementally.

i don't want to turn off loyal F&R users by making it into bloatware.
36492
that would be nice.
i'd be happy to update the coding snacks page whenever you have a new version ([email protected]),
and i'd be happy to provide you with web/ftp space if you'd like a place to have your various scripts that you would have complete control over.

Best Text Editor / Re: PSPAD News
« Last post by mouser on July 19, 2005, 02:47 PM »
ah i see - excellent - so its a new beta release not listed in their history.
sounds very promising!!!
even if its not perfect now, at least it sounds like they are finally trying to fix it.

this is a big deal.

for anyone who didn't read our review, we basically thought that pspad would be the best free text editor on the planet, if only they had a non-f*cked word wrap.

will be a great day when they fix it.

newest pspad history from the release of 6/18/05 says this about wordwrap (http://www.pspad.com/en/whatsnew.htm):

"New variable WordWrapEnabled in [special settings] section. Default state is 0 - wordwrap is disabled. If you want actual buggy wordwrap, you must enable it. "

Hmm.. it sounds like rather than fix the word wrap feature, they just added a variable to make it harder to enable the existing buggy word wrap  :o

if anyone knows different let me know.

i'll correct the notepad2 column select info.

i'll check out both.
36497
now that is an interesting idea.. i actually have the tools i need to add a global mouse hook to do that i think -
would be more a matter of figuring out a smart way to detect when it was appropriate to auto copy.

let's try it, just for fun :)
36498
Desktop Ghoster (i took a small liberty with the name so that it would be a little easier to identify) is now on the coding snacks page as a precompiled exe and original .ahk script.

awesome work again skrommel; give us a paypal email address to put up so people can make a donation if they want to.

and also, nice teamwork by everyone here with the good suggestions, and especially dragonrider who first got the ball rolling with this.

Finished Programs / Re: IDEA: Capslock reverses case of selected text
« Last post by mouser on July 19, 2005, 01:24 PM »
this doesn't directly address your issue ampa, but, while i think as-u-type is a very cool idea, i am just about done with my clipboard help+spell tool, whose purpose is to let you quickly spellcheck highlighed/selected text in any application, or do some quick fixes to it (change from uppercase to normal case for example).

maybe it will serve your needs.  it should be a little more flexible than as-u-type, and less of a cpu drain, but it will mean that you have to manually select the text to fix and hit the hotkey, rather than have it auto mark spelling errors in the original dialogs as you are typing.
36500
it's definitely fun.
i was just going to suggest some options, like degree of dimming, and request the ability to exclude the taskbar from dimming - then i saw that skrommel had already implemented them!!

here are the settings that seem to work best for me:

;Settings
;backcolor=000000-FFFFFF or leave blank to speed up screen.
;image=                  Path to image or leave blank to speed up screen.
;transparency=0-255      Makes the ghosting more or less translucent.
;jump=1 or 0             Makes the active window show through the ghosting.
;showdesktop=1 or 0      Removes the ghosting when the desktop is active.
;showontop=1 or 0        Removes ghosting from ontop windows like the taskbar.
image=C:\Windows\Bubbles.bmp
backcolor=000000
transparency=80
jump=1
showdesktop=1
showontop=1

i'll be adding a precompiled exe file for this tool to coding snacks page today for those who don't want to install autohotkey.

awesome work skrommel - it's fun to see this finally implemented.  also a testament to autohotkey i think.  very powerful.
