Clipboard Help+Spell / Early Early Alpha
« Last post by mouser on August 08, 2005, 11:28 PM »
ok guys, this is not for the faint herted -
it's an early alpha.  most of the pieces are there and ive been working out the kinks for a long time,
but there's still lot's to do.

only install this if you want to help shape the direction of the program.
if you are looking for a finished product, you've got a little while longer to wait.

https://www.donation...oardHelpAndSpell.zip

I'll try to have an install-less version up in the near future.

sorry, quick pasting and quick add note doesnt work yet.

in fact i have had one of those red pens leak.. not cool.

i should have made clear that when i write, i write in 4 colors.  so i need a 4 color solution that is easy to carry around.
the 4 color bic pen is perfect, and i don't mind the size at all.  but the drying ink kills me.
i feel like i am going to lose my mind when i have to start shaking it and scratching it into a book to get the ink to flow..

the pop up window will be adjustable in size to whatever size you want and remember it - you will be able to make it TINY.
i agree most of the time you will not want to modify it.

as you say it will pop up with Title, Group, Text, Icon.
they will all be set to defaults (group will be what you set last), so most of the time you can just click OK.

i'm very interested in the idea of trying to come up with procedures for efficient clipboard workflow.

i think the one thing we are in agreement about is that it would be nice to have the program not just capture things automatically on ctrl+c copy, but have an alternate hotkey like ctrl+alt+c which would have just one intermediate step where it let you quickly name + categorize (and maybe edit) the clip before adding it to its collection.

so in other words a nice quick pop-up form where you could add some extra info to the clip at the time of capture. (we could actually trigger this on ctrl+c also, but that might be annoying).

there are a *lot* of notes programs, and i usually try to avoid writing programs when there are already good freeware tools available.. but in this case, since i use a notes program so much myself, i could not resist making a custom one.

i hope that we can figure out some unique directions to go in to make it different from other tools like keynote.  there are some unique features that it has that i have wanted in a notes function and this will be an opportunity for us to try those.

i say we keep the clipboard focus - and make this the best clipboard tool out there, perhaps short only of clipmate in terms of functionality.

so i say we make the spelling functions high priority.

the one price to pay for this, as you suggested, is resource use / exe size.
i'm afraid this is going to be a big program.  cpu use will not be high, but the exe size will be fairly high (4-8mb).  for people who hate programs above a couple hundred k, this program is not going to be for you.  i've long stopped worrying so much about memory use now that machines have so much memory - i feel like i paid for my memory i want it used :)

so those looking for a tiny lightweight clipboard tool are going to want to look elsewhere.  for others, i invite you to try to help me figure out some unique stuff we can do with this tool in terms of clipboard functionality and notes management.

combine clips - good idea.

yes, this is going to be a full notes tool - it's too late to turn back now.

strip pictures and stuff - definitely.
i havent gotten to capturing multimedia (pics, rtf) yet - i've been working, believe it or not, steadily every day on this, and it's been all about the database and core functionality so far.

i've got some real fun features in store for you guys with the next beta... i hope you'll be happily surprised.
virtual folders and ability to make your own virtual folders (see your favorites, recent clips, etc).

recursive note lists (something i've been wanting for a long time in other notes programs).

complete backup and restore system to insure you don't lost anything.

i'll definitely have a beta available by monday.

there's still quite a lot of work to do - i've spent so much time getting the infrastructure working right; been kinda painful actually.  but i hope the results are worth it.

hey that's a pretty cool tool!  from web page:
The Free Data Capture Tool (FDC) gives you a convenient method for
capturing, filtering, mining, and conveniently processing text from webpages and other sources,
capturing images from web pages or dialog screens,
sending captured data via email.
FDC uses the MS/Windows clipboard and gives you a myriad of processing options that facilitate data mining of captured text. FDC generally hides in your system tray waiting for clipboard copy events to occur. FDC has a single interface dialog that pops up when activated. The interface has a captured data box on the left where either the image or text that was last captured is displayed as a thumbnail. Click on an image to view it. Capture options are on the right side of this dialog. Pressing the [Filters] button gives you control over how capture text data is processed.

i like to list similar programs in my help files.
if anyone knows of clipboard/notes programs, please post them, so i can:
1) add them to help file
2) check them out to get inspiration
3) let people know about alternatives

clipboard helper does flash the config screen before hiding.. that's a bug.  after that it should be in your tray (double click to configure).

however the new clipboard tool that grew out of this request will do everything this one does but a lot more.

rjh extensions are quite nice (a warning though, i used them for years without incident, but at somepoint on my new computer, either because it was winxp or because i was using a new file manager or antivirus or something, they were causing my shell to crash or hang when i did a right-click contect menu; took me a week to pinpoint the problem. just a heads up).

ps.
donationcoder will soon be releasing a custom right click context menu tool that should blow all others out of the water :)

it works!!
damn that is too cool!

looks like a really need to update skrommels script pack on the coding snacks page.

what i want to know is, how come everytime i try a skrommel script and start to write a reply to request a feature i find skrommel has already implemented it! (i was going to request a modifyable x offset for those of us with extra caption buttons in some of our windows, but its already there - nice).

post your request in the coding snacks section of the forum, skrommel is like a shark just waiting for some fresh sea turtles to devour.

Living Room / Beware email from creditcards, paypal, etc. that say "click here"
« Last post by mouser on August 04, 2005, 09:40 AM »
i've been noticing more and more spam and identity theft emails that can look quite convincingly like the real thing.

some of you may have created paypal accounts just to donate to this site so i thought it was worth making a special point of this for those of you not accustomed to such emails.

bottom line: if you ever get an email from any bank, credit card, paypal, any place where you might have financial/identity information, that says "click here to solve this problem" - just ignore it.

and don't be fooled into thinking that you can rely on the 'from' field in the email - it's easily faked.

All real emails from financial sites will just tell you to go log into your account as normal, and will not try to get you to click on such links.

so, if you ever get such an email and think it might be legitimate, just go to normal site you always go to and see if there is anything about the issue - never click on "click here" links.  often you can hold the mouse over a link and see the true url is something very different.

automatic filing/purging: you will also be able to tell it that certain apps should not be monitored, or to send clips from certain apps to specific groups on capture.

windows spell object: i intend to implement the same functionality found in as-u-type: http://www.asutype.com/
which can add spelling highlighting to standard web forms, etc.

clipnaming, yes i noticed that too. adding %windowtitle% and %applicationname%

will add hotkeys for both a quick-paste, and a quick-add-note (as we discussed earlier).

multiple views will be available, from super minimal to full complexity.  i think this is going to be really important and look forward to having further discussions about gui layout options.

regarding installer: i will try to use a zip-compatible install with this tool, especially since it will be getting frequent updates.  this will allow users to download an exe and either just run it to install it, or unpack the zip-compatible exe manually to copy over without needing any install.
