Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Question for Quick Pasters..
« Last post by mouser on August 11, 2005, 10:58 AM »
you'd hit a hotkey, window would come up, with cursor on last clip.  you could use arrows and hit enter to paste.
as for speed, i think it should be (almost) as fast as a normal menu.

yes, things like the filter/search would be an advantage of this approach, as it would be available.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Question for Quick Pasters..
« Last post by mouser on August 11, 2005, 10:38 AM »
so i'm getting ready to write the quick-paste functionality for CHS.

i don't personally ever use this feature of clipboard tools so i'm looking for some feedback.
the traditional approach is to have a hotkey bring up a small menu of recent clips, you select one and its pasted.

i had a slightly different idea i wanted to run past you guys.

what if quick paste brough up the main window, at a smaller size, and switched to a Preset called QuickPaste,
which by *default* would only show the grid view, with only 1 column (excerpts), and open to QuickPaste group node (which by default shows all clips from the last day), sorted by recency.

you would then double click on an item to have it pasted into your current application.

the advantages of this would be pretty substantial:
users could completely customize what and how their quickpaste views looked.
for those who like to quickpaste but would like to be able to search and roam around a little before quick pasting, this would allow them to customize their QuickPaste preset for example, to show a preview of selected clip, or let them select different groups, show more columns, etc.

here are the drawbacks:
1) youd have to double-click to paste in a clip and dismiss the window, compared to single click with normal quickpaste tools.
2) the quick paste menu would be bigger than most in terms of screen space used (mostly vertical space, used by menubars, etc.)

opinions?

ps. you can see how this would look, just drag off and close the group and memo views, hit the column customizing button (far left header of grid and turn off all columns except excerpy).

chs is going to allow you to drag clips out from the grid and drop them into other program windows and forms.  i think this will be a really nice feature.  is definitely on the todo list.

yes it would, but there are literally dozens of these apps already in existence, and they are all free.

here's an attractive looking one: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/gsplit.html

changing file extensions is a good idea, especially if you remembered past settings to undo.
and copy paths to clipboard is certainly one we are going to do, with some nice extras :)
we will definitely be having a robust copy/move to favorites item (send to stuff).

as for managing other context menus, unfortunately its another kind of product entirely, though it would be nice to use in conjunction with this; i used to know a good one.

the only real question in my mind is how well the copy on left button release will work.

i'd really love to hear more about any bugs or issues with true x-mouse.

these features will all be options, and i suppose ill let user decide which mouse button does what, and with what modifier (ctrl+shift+alt).
also, while we are using a global mouse hook, this might be the time to think about any other global behavior that might be useful on mouse operations besides auto focus changing, and auto copy and paste.

i can see one operation that might be useful is like a select-all and paste combo, in addition to just a paste.
ie middle mouse button does paste, ctrl+middlemouse does select-all before the paste.

we are not very strict here, and the point of the donation system is to encourage people to give serious thought to donating, not to punish people.  anyone who wants to try one of our programs but is not ready to donate can just email me and i will send them the download link :)

so if you want to try chs, just email me ([email protected]).

-

your comments are actually in line with a discussion we have in the past where true x-mouse came up also: https://www.donation...ndex.php?topic=191.0 , especially your #2 comment.

i plan to try to implement #2 (and i can add #3 and #1 easily), as *options* in chs;
i think to do it well you'd want the following:
a) it should be easy to turn this behavior on and off, and unload the hook dll needed for it when the function is off for optimal cpu usage.
b) you probably will want to let users set up an "exclusion list" of apps which it should not do copy on left-button-release.

in short, i am going to try to implement these things in chs; i look forward to more suggestions as well. in addition to middle mouse button to paste we could also support like paste on control+click (personally i have a hard time pushing middle mouse button for some reason, just feels wrong :))

i think we are now talking about files that have been split by someone else into just plain parts, *not* using winrar.

if anyone feels up for it, i'd love some help collecting links to and lists of existing tiny little right-click context menu tools, and the functions they provide.

ie, things like rjh extensions, http://www.rjhsoftwa...e.com/rjhextensions/
copy path to clipboard, http://stefan.bertel...clipboardpath.en.htm
etc.

and also i'd love to get suggestions for right click context menu tools that you'd like to see.

my answer was really about splitting your own files; i find winrar is just perfect for that, with the bonus of supporting all the options youd want about self assembly, compression, etc.

but if you need a tool for rejoining files someone else has split then you need another tool.

well, i've decided to make chs a full fledged tool for this kind of stuff, so it's just a matter of time, so keep the requests coming.

actually i have a special idea of something to add that will even take it beyong what we're talking about but i'll discuss that after more progress is made.

however, my plan is still to perfect the clipboard + notes aspects of this tool, and only then move to more general database handling.  so keep an eye on the todo list and keep the suggestions coming.

Living Room / New reviews coming..
« Last post by mouser on August 10, 2005, 05:20 PM »
Ok I've been really busy coding new tools for the site..
it's hard to spend time on reviews when i'm deep in the middle of a new donationcoder.com project.

but we definitely need some new reviews; next week we'll start with an easy one, open/save dialog box customizers.  scott and i will team up on it.

after that, we are going to bite the bullet and do the review that gets the most votes, which looks like Hierarchical Notes tools, which is going to be one hell of a difficult review.  but you guys/gals who took the time to vote deserve to have your votes heard, so that's what we're going to do.

plus, as the new dc tool (clipboard help+spell) becomes a full fledged hierarchical note tool, i suppose it will be useful to find the best competitor out there.

but we still need some more guest reviewers! if you feel like you could do a dc-caliber review, send me an email!

remember, the more guest reviewers, the more time i have to program software for the site!
