If Darwin's computer gets smoked, boy is Carol gonna be in trouble.

:-)

 ;D

I wish I could find the animated smiley of a smiling face eating popcorn - it would have been perfect here!

Not so fast... Downloading the installer for the registered version now!

Thanks for the update - I'll install it and take it for a spin. Frankly, though, I'm loathe to do it as everything is just working at the moment. Maybe I'll just hold off for now...

Carol - after almost a month of wrangling with Arconis I have keys for both Echo Workstation and Universal Restore for Echo Workstation (long story short: I purchased maintenance on both in July but was supplied a maintenance key for Workstation and only a second licence key for UR; a sales expert had to sort out the resulting mess. PIA,). Anyway, now that I have keys I am considering installing and wonder if you have any comments after a month of use before I take the plunge?

General Software Discussion / Re: Tongue in Cheek Review of Windows XP
« Last post by Darwin on December 17, 2007, 08:46 AM »
If you're a gamer, the upgrade to XP is mandatory. Whilst there are a few games that won't work as well in XP than in Vista, you'll find that on the whole XP supports almost all the games you'd want to play. In addition, it's vastly increased reliability means you'll spend much more time killing things than restarting, a welcome change I can assure you.

I'm not a gamer, but these few lines had me laughing into my bowl of cheerios. As did this:

Whilst content-creators had insisted on all sorts of intrusive features in Vista that made the multimedia experience a living hell for Microsoft users, thankfully with XP Microsoft were able to insist that their customers' needs came ahead of the content creators outdated business model. It's nice to see a corporation like Microsoft stand up to the cyber bullies at the MPAA and refuse to assume that its loyal customers are criminals.

Thanks for the link, tinjaw

Yeah... I knew about the live phone call  :-[ I've just been busy marking, marking, marking, and lecturing... That's died down now (excpet for marking the final exam) so I *might* take  you up on the live phone call after Christmas!

Thank you again, Pierre!

Congrats, even if i don't log in,i lurk here on a daily basis. Thanks to the DC community at large, this is a smart forum without smug people, very rare.

I don't know... I'm feeling pretty smug about 100,000 members!

Seriously, since I noticed membership surpassing the 100,000 mark a couple of days ago, "Now we are 100,000" has been playing like a mantra in my head. *Perhaps* PPLandry, Armando, and Doublewitt will get the (admittedly forced) reference and will be able to hum along... Think Expo '67! Think 20 million! Just nod and smile...

Awesome Pierre - a USB version will be fantastic...

OK, cards on the table - I was in the same boat as Jim, but hadn't posted/contacted you to that effect  :-[ - your instructions to him above have enabled me to start using SQLNotes

I'll try to be a productive member of the beta team from now on!

« Last post by Darwin on December 15, 2007, 09:49 AM »
thanks for the post, Doublewitt. I got a copy of EasyNoter earlier this month as an unheralded bonus with another software purchase. I installed it and played with it for five minutes but it shows its age - WRT to GUI and features - and I haven't used it since. Your post has just inspired me to cut my losses and simply uninstall it (no hardship as I'm not using it anyway...).

Sorry it's turned out to be such a millstone around your neck - that's too bad. It *looks* on paper like a nice freebie to giveaway, too bad it's not such a good deal for either the end-user or the company that is giving it away.

Biggest Offender:

Windows Update Restart notification window! I HATE THAT THING!

I'LL SMURFING REBOOT WHEN I WANT TO!

Smurfing - bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! I love it. I think you've mentioned this as an alternative to, ahem, less savoury language in the past, but I've never seen you use it action. Awesome

If you use <a href="http://www.snapfiles...m/get/tweakuixp.html">TweakUIXP</a>, there is a setting to prevent applications from stealing focus. Instead the window will blink a fixed number of times (you set the number) in the taskbar to alert you.

I tried it, but it never seemed to work for me. :(

My pet peeve is that this setting never seems to survive a reboot... and I've given up on using the tweak altogether. Anyone know the registry changes made - it would be nice to have a .bat file run on system start...

EDIT: better to read the entire thread befrore commenting  :-[

Living Room / Re: How often do you reboot your primary workstation?
« Last post by Darwin on December 14, 2007, 02:57 PM »
The advantage of hibernation versus standby, at least on a notebook, is that there is no drain on the battery. The disadvantages are the chunk of harddrive space that gets allocated to it and the slower startup time (but I hasten to add that even this is much quicker than simply booting the computer from a full shutdown).

Cool.  Did you see my screenshot?  See how I got the time to appear in a bigger font in green and the date in yellow?  You know how to do that?  You have to create two clocks and save them in the options.  That way you can have different looking text for different items.  Cool, eh?  I had to ask the author about that because I couldn't figure out how he did it.  I'm annoying.

 ;D Thanks for the tip!

Perverse, but compelling, Ralf! I'd be interested as well. If it wasn't for the twin facts that I no longer have ezboostr installed and that the USB drives that I was using all contained additional data (probably not a smart move, in hindsight), I'd be up for giving this a shot... Hopefully someone using either Vista or ezboostr will post with a "result". I can't imagine that it would be a very pleasant result, though - something bad's gotta happen!

Screenshot Captor / Re: Way More Than Your Average Screen Capture Tool!
« Last post by Darwin on December 13, 2007, 02:35 PM »
My usage of Screenshot Captor echoes J-Mac's usage over the years (not that SnagIt has ever given me any trouble - in my case I've installed SSCaptor and played with it, but never very seriously). After reading J-Mac's comments I'll have to put it through its paces!

Note: Snag-It 7 or 8 did a VERY comprehensive job of either hiding or removing completely some very useful features - such as the blur tool johnfdeluca (may I call you John? or Jack?) refers to above. I still use Snag-It 8 and like it, but I'm beginning to appreciate that I may be missing out here!

Yeah - just figured that out! However, in using it, this makes more sense anyway and I am sure reduces the "hit" on my system. Usually all I want to know is that date, so this works perfectly! I like it A LOT so far.
