It then warns to "disable UPnP (if possible)", along with restricting networking protocols and ports, including Simple Service Discovery Protocol (SSDP) and Simple Object Access Protocol (SOPA) services from untrusted networks, including the Internet.

And there you have it! They finally admit that SOPA is a bad idea~! :P

Living Room / YouTube Subscriptions on the Horizon
« Last post by Renegade on January 29, 2013, 08:21 PM »
You may be able to buy subscriptions to paid channels on YouTube shortly:

http://adage.com/art...tions-spring/239437/

A new chapter in online video is about to begin. YouTube is prepping to launch paid subscriptions for individual channels on its video platform in its latest attempt to lure content producers, eyeballs, and advertiser dollars away from traditional TV, according to multiple people familiar with the plans.

YouTube has reached out to a small group of channel producers and asked them to submit applications to create channels that users would have to pay to access. As of now it appears that the first paid channels will cost somewhere between $1 and $5 a month, two of these people said. In addition to episodic content, YouTube is also considering charging for content libraries and access to live events, a la pay-per-view, as well as self-help or financial advice shows.

If they end up locking it down with DRM and all kinds of crap, I'll pass. I download anything over a couple minutes as watching in a browser is either painful or impossible. But we'll see what happens.

Living Room / Re: Phone unlocking ban could hit you in the wallet
« Last post by Renegade on January 29, 2013, 07:59 PM »
The Congressional Librarian (agreeing with the CTIA, the wireless industry association) felt that phone unlocking should not be legal because the wireless carriers already have very liberal unlocking policies, and that unlocked phones can be bought directly from phone manufacturers.

Under the law, the penalties for unlocking a subsidized wireless phone without carrier consent can be severe. If convicted, an offender can be fined up to $500,000 or imprisoned up to five years for the first offense. An offender can be fined up to a million dollars and/or go to prison for up to ten years for each subsequent offense.

If you BUY it, it's YOURS. Use it as a butt-plug if you like. But making it illegal to use something that you bought however you want to use it? Really, really bad precedent.

Just because the carriers are being somewhat nice today is no reason to assume that they'll be nice tomorrow. If they don't want to allow unlocked phones on their networks, then they can go ahead and watch how consumer backlash works.

But $500k and 5 years? HOLY MOTHER!

Any thoughts about the punishment being commensurate with the "crime"? (Not that it is a crime, but that it is treated as a crime - same goes for several other "crimes".)

Why is it that The Onion is less of a news parody than a predictive news program?

General Software Discussion / MS Office Subscriptions Now
« Last post by Renegade on January 29, 2013, 05:50 PM »
Looks like MS Office is moving to subscriptions?

http://tech.ca.msn.c...for-touch-online-use

Microsoft has released a retooled version of its Office software in an effort to extend one of the company's most important franchises beyond personal computers.

Tuesday's debut comes six months after Microsoft previewed the new-look Office, which includes popular word processing, spreadsheets and email programs.

The revamped Office boasts touch controls, just like the redesigned version of the Windows operating system that Microsoft Corp. three months ago. The Redmond, Wash., company is trying to ensure its products remain relevant as people increasing rely on smartphones and tablet computers instead of PCs.

Microsoft is offering Office 2013 in a $100 annual subscription package that includes online access on up to five Windows devices or Mac computers. The one-time price to install Office 2013 on a single machine starts at $140.

I have AKG headphones, and they're spectacular. K 240 MKII. But they have no mic. Still, AKG make some very good products.

(Sennheiser as well - some great stuff from them, but they can be pricey.)

However, I'm still thinking that Microsoft or Logitech are really about the best for price and effectiveness. Sure, you could shell out a truckload of cash for this or that, but really, there's that sweet spot where you get good quality at a good price, and anything better starts to cause you to bleed. I think Microsoft and Logitech have that sweet spot pretty much covered.

I've been very surprised at the high quality of some relatively cheap equipment. I've spent a small fortune on audio gear, and wouldn't do it again as there's little point to it anymore.

Or just hand the money over to a bunch of buddies... Just a bit skeptical about "non-profits" and "NGOs"... I've lost all faith in them after learning about what some of them really do. Enough to make you vomit through your eye-sockets.
That's why I always check http://www.bbb.org/us/charity/ first, just to see how much of the donation goes to the cause and what goes into the pockets of the "staff".

Some of the "causes" aren't what they appear to be on the surface. For some, it would be better if all the money were simply pocketed.

Chrome! Plain and simple.

I would not use any other browser. It is fast, has the extensions I need to remain productive, and works on any page I throw at it. In fact, I can't remember ever seeing chrome crash since I started using it.

You are very fortunate. I've seen Chrome crash more times than I care to count. Mind you, those were likely (guessing here) entirely due to the Adobe Flash plugin.

Still, a plugin *shouldn't* crash a browser. Error? Sure. Crash? no.

I've had better luck with Opera being graceful with crashes.

But, again, it's all about what you like. Chocolate, vanilla, strawberry - they all have their charms.

They all have strengths and weaknesses

I don't understand mankind. If every browser has strengths and weaknesses, and if those features are worldwide known, why nobody gathers the best of every browser and creates a perfect one????????

(of course this applies to every product, not only browsers)

It's much harder than it sounds. They're all trying, but they succeed in some areas, and do poorly in others. It's a matter of resource allocation.

What I see as a major problem is the business guys pushing to have their agenda. That does jack all for the technology, but creates short term profits. Anyone that has worked in the industry has seen this -- the MBAs are the ones that just make the world a horrible place.

And again, Jetbrains to the rescue- I have used XCode very little. I'm using AppCode, and it's fine.

How does it compare to Visual Studio, Eclipse, or MonoDevelop?

Xcode is just hellish to use. You have to admire the level of patience/masochism for Xcode developers. They put up with a lot of crap.

(FWIW - I think Visual Studio 2008 was the end of the best feature in Visual Studio - they dropped dynamic help in there, which really diminished the value of VS - that was a spectacular feature.)

I'm curious, as I'm using VS, MonoDevelop, and Eclipse now, but really don't like Eclipse.

Well, we've all heard about the woes of RIM. A friend was laid off from there. It sits on top of the place where I used to go to school. The old soccer field is gone...

But enough of that.

RIM has done something INTELLIGENT!

HOLY CRAP! Can you imagine it? A tech company kind of sort of almost maybe possibly breaking the mold a little tiny bit! :P

(The entire breaking the mold paradigm has until now been completely dominated by small companies like Xamarin. Props to Miguel!)

Got an Android app? Now you can put it into the Blackberry World store with minimal fuss!

http://developer.blackberry.com/android/

It looks pretty good. Write for Android, then package for Blackberry.

I gotta admit... I do root for the guys at RIM. Even though they paved the soccer field where I used to play... I'll forgive them for that. :P

They have a big push now though --- go to the Code Project and you'll see truckloads of Blackberry ads.

http://www.codeproject.com/KB/android/

Let's hope that RIM does well. Competition out there will really help the tech sector. We don't need any more monopolies or fixed markets in IT. We need more freedom and innovation. I think this is a good thing for everyone.

(And yes - I'm a 110% bigot against closed markets/eco-systems -- I like the ability to cross over between mobile/computing eco-systems.)

GO RIM~! :D YAY~!

I had a piece of freeware along time ago that I didn't have time to write any "Help" for. But, I had a nice little Help menu item. When you clicked it, you got a message:

This is not the help you are looking for. Move along...

Got lambasted in a review for that... Someone didn't take kindly to it, but most likely because they didn't get the reference. Ah well. Win some, lose some. :D

But I don't like the font rendering. Everything (e.g. fonts) seems to be less sharp (greyer) than with Firefox somehow.

Interesting. I had the same page open in Chrome, Firefox, and Opera, and the Chrome version text was noticeably worse - as in OBVIOUSLY!!!!!!! worse. ;)

Here's a PSD for comparison:

* Opera-Chrome-Firefox-type-comparisons.zip (194.63 kB - downloaded 331 times.)

I put a border around the text where in Chrome it is quite blurry, but the same text in Opera and Firefox is very clear.

I'd never noticed that before. Good observation there!

There is no guarantee that anyone will receive any money. If too many people submit a claim to get paid, the money will all go to non-profits like the EFF. They are one of the ones on the list of who will get a chunk of it if it doesn't go to the victims that put in a claim. I don't have a problem with the EFF getting part of the money, and I am not sure why anybody else would be. Do you know something about the EFF or any of these other organizations that I don't?

The EFF is one of the very, very few that I have any kind of faith in anymore.

Having looked into some "charities", NGOs, and the like, and having had my eyes blown open, I can't help but look at some name of some organization and imagine the exact opposite of what one would think the name implies.

1 example - warning, this is disturbing...
USAID sponsors forced sterilization of women across the world, yet in their public face, they denounce it:

http://transition.us...ays/16days_2008.html

Do You Know What
 Gender Violence Is?

Gender-based violence both reflects and reinforces inequities between men and women and compromises the health, dignity, security, and autonomy of its victims. It encompasses a wide range of violent acts that include:

Domestic violence
Using rape and other forms of
sexual violence as a weapon of war
Female genital mutilation/cutting
Dowry-related violence
Child marriage
Trafficking girls and women
Honor crimes
Bride kidnapping
Forced marriage
Wife inheritance
Sexual harassment
Date rape
Forced sterilization or other coercive
     reproductive practices

The reality is that they support it and continue their evil:

http://www.ncregiste...rilization-campaign/

There are many, many, many more references out there about these criminals mutilating women. Just plug in "usaid forced sterilization". India, Thailand, Peru, Uzbekistan...

It's not just them - it's a lot of other organizations as well. I'm only using them as 1 example of many. The issue is so prevalent (organizations using Orwellian language to achieve agendas) that there's just no way to sanely place any trust in any organization that you don't know really damn well.

So, when I hear about "charity" and "NGO" and all that, pfft. In my mind, I reverse whatever their name is and figure that's what they really do.

I use Opera, Chrome, IE, and Firefox, in that order.

Opera is my main browser.

IE I use for some specific things.

Chrome I used because Google has decided to make things break in Opera.

Firefox I use for when I want to check a site that I've not signed into or for when I have cookies in other browsers that muck up what I want to do and I don't feel like deleting individual cookies.

On my Mac, I use Firefox as my main browser.

They all have strengths and weaknesses. It all just depends on what you want to get done.
