there is an option already to do this - go to Behavior tab, and uncheck "Formatting -> Previe Modification Presets"

YES - undo is needed for this stuff and is being added - i agree 100%!
not having undo is horrible. must be fixed soon

ah i see what you are saying..
sort of like, you hit the hotkey to bring up the quick paste menu,
and in addition to being able to select from recent clips to paste you can select from a list of some special clips to paste into the app, whose fields would be replaced at the time of pasting.

you know, you've given me an interesting idea..
like perhaps a way to have something like a "hint" file, that told f&r that certain keywords should be associated with certain files in certain locations.  so that if you typed certain things it would show you them.  so if you typed display properties it would know to show you the display propties control panel items, etc.  the Group Alias stuff already does this to some extent, but it's a little more manual.. i'll think more about this.

that's quite cool..
i use winpcap in my url snooper program - it's very fast but i'd still be hesitant to have it running all the time, just because of the cpu and memory resources it would need.

sounds like a good idea about the date and time fields.
when exactly would you use them? do you mean that when you create a custom note you want to be able to tell it to always start out with date and time at the top of the note? or when exactly would you use this?

i notices the same problem as you, i want to use the band to group by days but its grouping by seconds - i will try to figure out a solution.

I'm not sure why the band config button wasn't turning it back into the normal view - what exactly was happening when you push the button - nothing?

IsInRecyleBin is failing because of a spelling mystake in my program that is looking for IsInRecyleBin instead of IsInRecycleBin.
i will fix in next version coming out this week.

i'm experiencing same problem as you now in group icon, i will fix that too!
thanks for the bug report - lot's of improvements on the way for this program.

you know, thats a brilliant idea.
basically you are suggesting that one could run a "server" program on another computer with a fast internet connection.
and then on your pc, you right click a file and say "remote download" and it basically sends a message to the remote server you have configures and tell its to queue up the file for download.  very clever idea.

here are some things i love about winzip and winrar which i use often:
both can make self extracting executable (sfx), that can also be unpacked by a right click drag operation - i just love that.
i working with drag and drop and in shell all the time, so right click context menu extensions are super important to me.
both winrar and winzip both handle this great.  if you select 10 zips or rars, you could right click drag and you get options to unpack them all into destination dir, or unpack all each into their own named subdir.  for me personally thats the first way i would eliminate candidate apps that don't provide those functions.

no archive app that doesnt offer me that will ever be used by me.

i also mentioned this before but i LOVE the file splitting support in winrar - it's just perfect for if you want to split up files, because it can add strong encryption, and great compatibility, and nice options for how to split.  so thats a real plus in my book.

for compatibility you can't be zip format, which is very important if you plan to share files.
another advantage: you can get free programs that will create zip files, and create sfx zip exes, but only the official rar/winrar can make .rar files, which i think sucks.

i will take a much deeper look at some of the candidate programs and give a better opinion.  i know that 7-zip has a good reputation among some good people so i think i need to give that especially another look.

and i am curious to hear what jibz thinks..

i think some people will want to use the quick name (file prefix) to OVERWRITE the template.
other people will want to use a template always but use the quick name to ADD some info.

for example, i like to have date on my files always, so i would like template to specify date and i use file prefix to add custom name to file.

but i think we can satisfy all desires if we do what we said here, which is to OVERWRITE by default, but if user wants they can add %QuickName% in template or %T% in the quick name and then it will combine them.

yes i think you are right -
it would be nice to have it show highlight of the object it is about to capture, and then maybe require something like push ctrl+click of mouse to capture currently highlighted active object.  this is really good idea - i will put it on todo list.

yes i agree sometimes its more natural to select and move and resize region at the time of capture.

btw the new version of screenshot captor has much nicer way of dragging the image around with right mouse so its funner to move around in the image i think.

i was thinking also like this, in template we can have a field for prefix like %FilePrefix%

IF template has %FP% in it, then combine them and use that.
so if prefix = "myapp" and template = "Screenshot - %FP% - %date" then filename would be "Screenshot - myapp - Aug 14,2005"

ELSE
If the "Filename prefix" field is empty
==> use the template from Edit | Preferences | Templates

ELSE
2.)
If the "Filename prefix" contain something like an name part and / or an %placeholder%
==> use this only and include no template

ELSE
3.)
If the "Filename prefix" contain something like in 2.)
AND you want to use the template part
==> use the palceholder %T% in the "Filename prefix" field
to include the template too

ELSE
4.) if the "Filename prefix" field AND the template is empty
use "ScreenshotCaptor_%num%" for default filename part.


i think that gives most freedom, but we should probably rename it from FILE PREFIX to something like
FileQuickName or FileTitle

all of the apps on donationcoder.com are moving to an install-optional distribution.
you will be able to unpack the files manually and put them where you want, OR run the installer if you prefer.

i will put it on todo list - i know exactly what you mean, though i try to get in habbit of just grabbing entire screen with prtscr button and then selecting and cropping from within screenshot captor since its easier to select a region and zoom and undo.

great ideas!

in fact i have just now added ability to grab info about the application like application name, product name, company, application description,
and i am making those available.  %CapMode% and %Res% are very good ideas, i will add these in next version
