Cheat Sheeter / Re: Similar Program
« Last post by mouser on August 24, 2005, 11:51 AM »
beautiful screenshots, and you've given me an idea of something to add to cheat sheeter.

cheat sheeter has been about 90% complete for a month, but has just gotten a bit stalled - it's not dead, it will get finished, i'm just waiting for my 2nd wind on it.

i want to get the rest of the release programs updated (and especially find&run version 2) before i try to release it because it's going to require some attention as people write cheat sheets for it.

Finished Programs / Re: DONE - IDEA: modem online always on top indicator
« Last post by mouser on August 24, 2005, 11:39 AM »
greetings Muhammad and greetings to Pakistan!

"Internet Login Clock" is a much much better name.
i really do need to stop trying to name programs, i do a bad job ;)

I should say first that the reason that the program is missing from the main software pages is that it was written as a "Coding Snack" on our site.  These are programs that are written in a day or so in response to a user request, and usually are not as complete as ther other programs on our site and usually don't get much attention.  You can find the info about these programs on the Coding Snacks page: https://www.donation...dingSnacks/index.php

but just because it is a coding snack doesn't mean that we won't improve it due to requests.

i forget why i didn't remove the titlebar the first time - but i will try to remove it or have an option to remove it.
i can add an option to make it exit when the connection is closed.

the only part i'm not sure if i can do is starting automatically when a connection is established - i will look into this; if anyone finds code to hook into windows to have it notify a program on connection let me know.

any more suggestions would be very appreciated - i will try to add these features in the next week or so.
if you have any more ideas please do post them.

and I think when i will change the name officially to your suggestion if you do not mind.

the real serious advantage of using autohotkey here is that we have skrommel who is not only an incredible expert at the autohotkey scripting language but extremely generous in terms of being willing to help people write scripts.  definitely something to consider..

i should point out, you need to have the newest version of the programs (screenshot captor in particular) to work with the new keys.

i added more instructions to the key generation page, and i added some links back and forth between the quick download list page and the key page, should make it easy to quickly download the files and keys.

still doesnt help the multistep process of signing up, getting confirmation email, coming back.

im going to modify the sign up page and confirmation email to be more helpful and provide some links.

Living Room / Re: Improving downloadability, new license system, etc.
« Last post by mouser on August 23, 2005, 07:47 PM »
btw, all of these programs are "transportable" - none use registry settings to save their info, and that includes the license key info, which gets saved into the application directory.

so you can put any of these programs on a usb stick, enter license key info on first use and it should run find.

in addition, in order to make the power users a little less annoyed, i have also taken this opportunity to repackge every program with an installer into the new zip-compatible exe system, so that you can either manually unpack the files or run the installer, it's up to you.

(again only screenshot captor, the form letter machine, and clipboard help+spell have been updated on site so far, the rest are on their way this week).

With the new license key system i am trying to also simplify downloading from the site.

one of the advantages to the new license system is it will let us always make the most recent version of every program available for everyone to download.  Two programs which were previously only members only (form letter machine, clipboard help+spell) are now available for public downloading.

the member download page will be obsolete by the end of the week.
in its place i am putting a new page with a very concise list of all programs available for download on the site, sorted by release date.

in this way you should be able to click on that page and in 4 seconds see if there are any new releases on the site you want to download, and then download them directly.  So this should make it really easy for members to keep updated.

The new download start page https://www.donation.../Software/index.html has been adjusted with links to this release page and also the new keyfile page.

I'd appreciate any comments about the new layouts and any difficulties getting the license key thing to work.
(Note not all programs have been updated with license key support yet, so far only screenshot captor, clipboard help+spell, and the form letter machine; the rest should be finished in a day or two).

some people refer to different things when they talk about macro programs.

if you are looking for a program to let you assign commands to keyboard shortcuts you make, that is one class of programs (i like Macro Express for that).

if you are talking about a little scripting language to let you automate stuff and do things, then a program like AutoHotKey is what you want.

There is of course some overlap, the keyboard-centric apps have some scripting, and the scripting centric apps have some hotkey configuration, but figuring out which is your main interest will definitely help narrow down the field.

you can cite it any way you want - the real question is what the publisher will let you include in the bibliography.

i guess it would fall under the same type of citation as "personal communication with author" except in this case maybe
"personal communication between author and the internet" ;)

Finished Programs / Re: DONE - IDEA: modify system path (System Path Commander)
« Last post by mouser on August 23, 2005, 02:09 PM »
the only thing this needs that i keep on chr to figure out a trick to solve is that sometimes after you make a change its not reflected in the system right away - it requires either a reboot or easier just go to control panel, click edit path, click ok, to have the system do a little pause and flash and load the new path.

powerdesk and directory opus both also display zips as folders.
maybe all file explorers do this?

hi stefan i'm flag you figured out how to get it to work.
you are surely right that it is a bit of work for new members.

some things i will try to do:
1) automatically email members with their universal license key as soon as they donate.
2) maybe auto mail people who sign up at the forum with their freeware license keys after they sign up (ie along with their confirmation email?)
3) add better instructions to the keys page for what to do with the license key (ie select all license text, open about box, push "enter new license" button, paste in text).

4) easier to find the software to download - there will be one page listing download links for all software, accesible to public, which will make it easier to find the lastest version of all soft you want to download.

it should show your name and email in the about box.
yes i suppose i could remove or make it harder to change the license info.. though it can be useful if you want to copy it from one application to another i suppose...

https://www.donationcoder.com/Keys/

go to that page and just follow instructions - if you are a full member it will present you with a deluxe universal key immediately.
otherwise you have some other choices.  i'm dying to hear if anyone has any troubles with this before i go public with it.

The only program currently set up to use the license keys is the latest beta of Screenshot Captor:
https://www.donation...ScreenshotCaptor.exe'

but all dc apps will use this system in the coming week.

Unfinished Requests / Re: IDEA: Convert Archives to Folders

thats a very simple and elegant idea - all archivers should have that.
36047
are we sure we are talking about this tool? its not made with autohotkey or anything like it, so there shouldnt be any strange screen like that..
note that this tool is being made obsolete with Clipboard Help+Spell and also skrommels's clipboard count tool.
36048
nice find skywalla -

foldersize looks great (assuming you don't have this feature in your file explorer already).

seeing folder sizes is one of my favorite things missing from normal windows explorer - it really is *extremely* useful.

Skrommel has a new web page for all his scripts: https://www.donation...om/Software/Skrommel

It looks fantastic and i encourage everyone to go check it out.

Skrommel's participating in the coding snacks section has been one of the best things about this forum - and it's just been such a wonderful surprise.

At my urging, skrommel has set up a donation link at the top of his page - please if you use one of his scripts or just want to encourage what he's doing, consider making a small donation, if only just as a gesture to show him you appreciate what he's doing.

It's important for us all to support those who contribute to the site, and I hope you'll view this in that way, as an opportunity to not just thank skrommel but to make a statement that we are willing to recognize people who make this place better.

great work skrommel! looking forward to more of your autohotkey treasures
