Living Room / A thank you page for our donators.. Link Inside
« Last post by mouser on August 26, 2005, 06:26 AM »
I will find a proper place to link to this, but thought i would give you all a preview.

A thank you page (i'm calling it our Supporter Yearbook) to all of our donating members:

https://www.donation....php?action=yearbook

NOTE: If you have donated and are not on the list please contact me.

You can add your own custom yearbook quote to the thank you page! Go to your forum profile and as the bottom of the profile settings page you will see an entry for Yearbook Quote :)

If you have set a website, it will also be linked to from the Supporter Yearbook.

(If you wish to be removed from this page it's easy, just set your Yearbook Quote text to the word invisible and you will not be shown).

Tell me what you think of the page, i think its great fun. And thanks everyone who has donated so far!

we've been having a running discussion of the file open/save dialog box extenders.
see this post: https://www.donation...ndex.php?topic=506.0

in fact we are going to do a review of them very soon.

sounds like you are one of us who couldn't live without such a tool :)

oy..
it must be the latest routine i added yesterday to have the tiny tray tool launch the gui program to show the about box and on startup, has a bug because the program has been rock solid for months.

let me guess, it happened right on start up or else when showing about box?

Living Room / Zaine's HD crashed, he'll be back after the weekend
« Last post by mouser on August 25, 2005, 09:31 PM »
got an email that zaine had a complete HD crash (thankfully he had a bit of warning before it died completely), and he'll be back after the weekend.  good luck zaine!

[consider this yet another warning to back up your systems regularly]

i think ive implemented exactly this now; and asking for the about box of tray caused the configuration gui tool to launch and show its proper about box where you can enter key - so this problem should be solved now.

Site/Forum Features / IRC Chat - plus new web-based java interface from forum
« Last post by mouser on August 25, 2005, 02:07 PM »
If you didn't already know it, there is an irc channel for donationcoder:
Network: FREENODE
Channel: #donationcoder

If you are new to irc, try http://www.mirc.com for a good client.

We have now added the ability to join the channel and chat right from the forum(!) using a java-based system which is quite good.

Just click the chat button at the top of the forum  (or click here) to join and start chatting right away :)

[thanks to Dan The Man , the PJIRC team, and simplemachines forum for this feature]

Living Room / Re: Gmail Invitations — for anyone who still doesn't have one
« Last post by mouser on August 25, 2005, 11:57 AM »
thats a great point stefan - there are some special tools to let you use google mail as a backup system for your files - if someone has used one of these tools it might be nice to post about it.  for people who do not have a good offsite backup system, this could be a very useful thing to set up.

for example,
Gmail Drive: http://www.viksoe.dk/code/gmail.htm (freeware!)
36012
hehe i knew this would be a bit confusing.
thanks for the post i'm sure you are speaking for a lot of people who have same question.

in process tamer, you must open the configuration dialog (double click on tray icon or right click and select configure)
from that dialog you can hit the about button and enter the code.

in the next update of process tamer i will make it launch the configuration gui about box.

let me explain why it is the way it is:

people want process tamer to be super fast and efficient.  for this reason i decided not to put any license checking code in the little 150k process tamer tray tool, and only put it in the separate configuration tool which is only loaded on demand.

If you're new to this site please take some time to read a few of the discussions we've been having about the new license key system that went into effect at the end of August.

This site is trying hard to figure out a way to make the concept of donationware work.

We know it can be annoying to sign up just to get a license key for freeware.  There are so many high quality pure freeware applications available that it seems unreasonably annoying to make people sign up and download license keys.

I sympathize with any frustration you might have about having to jump through some hoops to use our programs without donating.

Please understand that our intentions are good and we are trying to strike a balance between on one hand encouraging people who can donate to do so (and donate an amount that they choose is fair), with the desire to keep our programs freely available to everyone.

Mainly we are motivated by a desire to make the concept of donation-based software be successfull where it has not been in the past (if you think it's unnesceary to do all of these other things to motivate donations, just ask any software author who has put up a link to request donations if anyone ever donates).

We are still experimenting to find the right balance.  Please bear with us, and we are very willing to listen to any suggestions, complaints, etc.  If you look around this forum you will see we take suggestions from users extremely seriously.

If you do decide to make a donation, know that you are helping us to make this a better site.

If you cannot afford to make a donation, or choose not to at this time, know that you are still welcome on this site just like everyone else.

Our intention is not to punish people for failing to donate or make them feel guilty - it's only to encourage those who can and are willing to do so, to actually go through with making a donation.  We ask only that you consider what we are trying to do and make a considered decision about whether you would be willing to help support us with some amount of your choice.

If you know for sure that you can't or aren't willing to make a donation, but would still like a full membership, please email me ([email protected]) and explain your position and i will upgrade your account to full member status.

Mouser's Zone / New setup/installer system
« Last post by mouser on August 24, 2005, 11:26 PM »
We had a discussion a while ago about wanting to be able to download zip files with the contents of some of the programs to use without an installer.

I'm happy to say that ever some exhausting days, all donationcoder.com programs now come in dual-use form.

They are downloaded as .exe files which you can simply double-click to install.

But the .exe files are really zip-compatible self-extracting executables, which you can open in any zip program, or else right click and drag-n-drop to unpack (with most archive tools), so that you can extract the contents of the archive manually.

If you extract the contents manually you will get a folder which is already in the exact state it would be on install, and you can even then run the install.exe program inside the unpacked folder if you would like to run the installer at that point, or else just run the program directly from the extracted folder (move it anywhere you want).  None of our programs require that they be run from a specific location, and all run fine without the installer, if that is what you prefer to do.

Hope the new system provides the best of both worlds for those who prefer everything automated vs. those who prefer to do it all manuall.  ;)
36015
As i moved to standardize all of the installers for donationcoder.com, drag&drop robot was the only program that used a different installer, and as such, upgrading to the most recent version may require an extra step or two.

You should uninstall the prior version first (prior to v1.09), and then install the new version.  in the future you can just install on top of the current version but because we are changing setup programs, all versions prior to current one should be uninstalled first.

If you have custom configuration files (which you should if you are using the program) they will probably be left alone during the uninstallation, but i highly recommend you back them up manually before uninstalling.  they are in a subdir called ConfigFiles.

You will then have to copy them into the newly installed directory ConfigFiles.

All done.

General Software Discussion / Re: I need your votes!
« Last post by mouser on August 24, 2005, 10:14 PM »
zaine you are awesome - this is a very nice and welcome sentiment.

let's also remember what i've said before:

we don't do any advertising, and so word of mouth and good reviews at shareware sites, especially user comments as can be found on places like fileforum are the main way that people hear about us, so i would very much like to ask you that if you like donationcoder.com software you take the time to say so when a software site allows users to make comments.

BUT remember -> you shouldn't make such comments just to help this site if you don't really use the program you are rating and aren't expressing your real views about it.  Such posts will be viewed as spam on these sites and will not help us.

so in short, if (and only if) there is a donationcoder.com application you like, please please do take the time to mention it or vote for it or rate it honestly on such sites, and tell your friends about it.

and remember to do the same for other freeware applications by other authors(!).

the idea of not supporting right-click drag-n-drop is insane.
it's probably the feature i use the most in an archive management program.
