Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Logitech Wireless Gaming Headset G930 - Mini-Review
« Last post by wraith808 on September 01, 2015, 09:56 PM »
...As someone who did install it, it's no different that what you have in the G software.  You can install the G930 without installing the complete gaming bit, but the gaming bit integrates it in if you install that.
______________________

Yes, that probably helps to explain it.
The G930 headset software switches the headset off after X (approx 10 or so) minutes of continuously having detected no sound input.
The tweak that @Deozaan describes is to the file Device_Manifest.xml, which is apparently set by default to switch off the headset after a specific period of time (15 mins.). What an annoying setting! - but I would presume it's a mistake (human error).
It seems that the file Device_Manifest.xml is probably installed by the gaming software (which I haven't installed).

And just for clarity's sake, mine does do that in windows 7.  So if I use the headset as just a headset in mumble or ventrilo, if we're not talking, it will shut off.  But if I route my game through it also, it never shuts off.  I've just dealt with it.

Thanks for the warning

For the casual user -- just doing simple backup -- this seems to make Amazon S3 no longer worthwhile.
I presume that my automatic backups to S3 would no longer work with two-factor authentication.
It's a different area, which is the reason they suggest having different keys with different users.  I have a key that I use for all of my backups that has only rights to the s3 bucket.  That one doesn't have two factor.  But if they get in, the only thing they can do is write to my backup bucket. It doesn't even have the rights to delete.  Just add.

See my reply on the thread -- sorry for the confusion -- I added the image so that I could blog it. I do that sometimes when I blog a post -- usually I leave a note in the "last edited by" line but i forgot this time.  Sorry for the confusion.

Oh, it's not a problem... I was just wondering if it was a new feature:)

I just saw something strange...

I made this post: https://www.donation...?topic=41535.new#new

And then when I went back to it because Tomos had replied, there was an image?

You can get them dirt cheap here (amazon.de), but the equivalent seems to be difficult to find on amazon.com
Not at all.  There are many on amazon... just look up "carbon steel frying pans".  The one I have is from a local store, but I can also recommend these products that work well on them:

http://www.amazon.co...nmail/dp/B00FKBR1ZG/

EDIT2// sorry wraith - I was confused by your links to cast-iron related products - yes, a search for "carbon steel frying pans" will get the same pans. //EDIT2

the ones I'm using are called crepe or omelette pans here - they are not cast iron - they have a relatively thin base and heat quickly (easy to overheat though).

Not sure what the edit was :)  But I was including those as they are really good on the carbon steel, so I was recommending them as you use them. :)

@Deozaan: That's odd. Maybe you are not using the latest Logitech G930 software? I don't have any file such as Device_Manifest.xml in any directory, related to G930 or otherwise. So I guess it's the Logitech gaming software that has this, not the standard G930 software. I don't have the gaming software installed.

I didn't know there was a difference. Maybe I only have the gaming software installed and not the... uh... other software.

As someone who did install it, it's no different that what you have in the G software.  You can install the G930 without installing the complete gaming bit, but the gaming bit integrates it in if you install that.

And Mouser has suggested an alternate page with even more stuff, but somehow that extra page "blows my info capacity fuse" and I can't look at it often.

Is it really better than the recent topics page: https://www.donation...x.php?action=rtopics
Do you want me to create a new standalone page similar to the list on the main page, but with more entries (or larger font)?

As Tao said above, the recent topics page ends up being a bit too much to take in in one glance. The beauty of the Info Center  is that it's small and concise, so a quick look gives an idea of the amount of activity that had taken place and whether there is anything worth checking out further.

The current layout already requires a lot less scrolling, so that's an improvement. Personally I'd just prefer the box at the very top, so landing on the main page immediately tells the visitor what's been happening, without the need to scroll or click on another page.

Perhaps if the collapse could be remembered on the info center, it wouldn't matter to people that don't use it that it's there.

Thanks App!  That was awesome!  I'd signed up before for learnable at your recommendation, and liked what was there... but had no time to take a look.  This makes it so I can do it at my convenience.

Thanks a lot!

PDF XChange Editor is an alternative, as long as you're not using it for work.  Not sure if it has all of your required features, but it's a start.

I use AWS for backing up my web sites mostly, though I use it for other reasons sometimes.  I switched to 2-factor, even though it's annoying and I don't use it much.  After all, if I'm only using it for a few things, how much trouble could I get in?

I saw these articles, and realized that 2-factor was a very good idea.

How a bug in Visual Studio 2015 exposed my source code on GitHub and cost me $6,500 in a few hours

Developers, Check Your Amazon Bills For Bitcoin Miners

Amazon AWS Account Hacking and How to Avoid it

How my Amazon S3 account was hacked with 10,776$ in billing.

Check your S3 and secure it... even if you don't use it.  Basically, they login, and then create EC2 instances with bitcoin miners.  They make the money, and leave you with the bill.

Just figured I'd post this as I'd not seen this particular phenomenon before.

As someone on the outside looking in, I don't see why they didn't revert to that.  Tell people the ramifications, and see how many takers they had.  Refund the nays, Fund the yays.

Can you try something for me -- if you change some settings and then manually exit the program, and then restart it -- does it save the settings then?
In other words, is it only failing to save changes when the computer reboots, or even if you manually exit the program and restart.

I know it doesn't save if your computer reboots.  Just never reported it.  But for me, I just exit it and go back in after making changes.

Ok for all you Info Center addicts: that section is good now yeah?

What is this "Info Center"?

RSS is alive, yes

After Google Reader died, I looked around and settled with commafeed. All my feeds work and am happy with the clean and lean interface.

Regards,

Anand

Thanks for that!  Looks even slimmer than The Old Reader!  But, with depending on donations and what has historically happened (RSS is a lot more resource intensive than people think, so takes more server resources than one would think), I'm not sure about switching over.

I've modified the Image button to explain better how to use the inline attachment feature, and removed the button from the Quick Reply bbc editor, since there is no way to attach files from the quick reply editor.
As has been discussed above, my intent for this button is largely to serve as help for those who don't yet know how our inline attached images work -- and therefore it is mainly about explaining to the user how to attach an image and refer to it.
As deozaan pointed out above, if you want to quickly insert an inline image you can use the new button down by the Attach Choose File buttons.  So there are solutions both for newbies and advanced users.

There is a good reason to use offsite images - gifs and animated images.  Those take up a not insignificant amount of space, at very little gain in a lot of cases.

Surely someone likes the new forum?

I don't dislike it :)  As with most change, it takes a bit to get accustomed to it.  I appreciate it more for the effort you put behind it than anything else.  And with that, thank you again.   :D

there was a big dropdown in text on inserting attachments with different types.
ah yes, i remember that now.. perhaps i will bring that back.

or i will just elaborate the text that is shown when you hit the image button (far left button on 2nd row of bbc buttons) to explain how to use the different tags.

Having to click OK on that dialog box each time you want to display an attached image is annoying.

Agreed.

I didn't mean to offend. My apologies to both you and Innuendo if I did.

I'm impossible to offend so no apology to me is necessary. You & I have been co-existing on this board for nearly a decade so I think we've known each other enough that any minor misunderstandings aren't worth giving much thought to given the communication medium & the inherent flaws it possesses.

DC has always been a place to exchange ideas & say what's on our minds. There's bound to be a crossed wire or mixed signal from time to time.

You're awesome, dude!

Are donationcredits supposed to be showing up?  And history?  Just curious as they don't seem to be.

Wraith -- are you by chance using a browser/device that does not show you a menu when you hover over the DonationCredits menu in your profile area?
This seems like it may be that problem -- where the choices of the different donationcredits pages are only available in a hover-over menu.

I figured it out.  It was my fault.  I didnt see that by default it was only for the past 30 days.  And the menus show up for me in chrome, though I was clicking through the credit amount that now shows next to your profile picture.

I'm going to hold off purchasing for now, because it still has a long way to go, and needs some major optimization to run smoothly, etc., but I'll definitely keep my eye on it for future updates and see if they ever deliver on a finished product. Too many Early Access games that show some promise end up either giving up before it's finished (and releasing a beta as a final 1.0 release) or completely changing the game from what was promised, disappointing those who bought in early.

This.  So much this.  So much so, that even though I like to support people trying to get their feet under them, I've had to change my approach.
