Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Keepass Password Safe mini-review
« Last post by jgpaiva on June 18, 2006, 04:43 AM »
Fantastic, Josh!
This is the way to create great reviews! Congrats, you even made me feel willing to try the app out.

I only have 2 suggestions: The main url, http://keepass.sourceforge.net should be clickable (i don't know why it didn't happen), and the video url should mention it's a video.
Other than that, i love the review, and KeePass looks really interesting.

Thanks!

General Software Discussion / Extortr Makes Blackmail Easy
« Last post by jgpaiva on June 17, 2006, 06:07 PM »
Here's a great web finding!

Extortr is a new tool that makes blackmail faster and more efficient than ever before. It bills itself as the “most technologically advanced extortion service in the world”. Simply upload a scandalous photo or video, set a price and use Extortr to send an anonymous threat by email. If your victim doesn’t pay, the upload goes public. The service takes a 10% cut of all transactions, with a $5 minimum. Payments are made via Paypal or - in some cases - deposited into a Swiss bank account.

General Software Discussion / Re: Flashget is now freeware
« Last post by jgpaiva on June 17, 2006, 05:19 PM »
I've been using flashget since yesterday, and i must say i'm pretty happy with it.
No ads, no spyware, etc, only places hooks on web browser, to detect downloads, i think, but i didn't allow them to be placed.
It's quite good, i like the fact that it helps organizing the downloads.
3605
Making what I first mentioned in my post is easy, having a screensaver just run something, and then quit. But I can't make it close the apps it launched.

On the other hand, if you'd like it to make virus-checks and incremental updates, i belive most antivirus and backup programs have option to schedule their activites that way.

Thanks Rover for at last getting me the explanation for this weird sentence!
3607
That's a good point, skywalka, but there are a few problems about it, i think.

Although it's true that this newsletter came out extremelly huge, notice that it only happened because it's about one week late. So, the regular newsletter isn't as enormous.

The thing with having one newsletter per week, is that it might be too constant. As rover mentioned, "Weekly would get too routine for me". For example, for those who read it in the mail, although it would have the advantage you mentioned, it might become too similar to the rss feeds, because a weekly newsletter would have almost all the week's posts.

Still, i understand your point about being too late to enter the talk, possibly it might be good idea to try out

Living Room / Re: Broken Windows Theory
« Last post by jgpaiva on June 17, 2006, 04:31 AM »
Why don't they use a compile farm with many of those dual cpu boxes?
Why don't they have a modular design where you only have to compile what needs to be compiled?
...
You're right about the first part, they should use clustering or something like that. I believe they do use, i think that guy was just giving an example, to explain how big windows actually is.
As for modular design, with all those dependencies, probably it's not possible. (i mean, they're supposed to be some of the best engeneers.. ;) )
3609
Yep, nudone's right, that's something i didn't get to yet. But i'll add a way to configure it in the next version. Right now, that happens because i (stupidly) made it for my screen, which is 800pixels in height. Sorry about that, i'll fix it asap!

@jdd:
Most probably, a word processor might solve your problem. Did you try pasting the image on ms word or something? You could fit it to the width of a page, and it would spread along lots of pages. Though, you probably would have to change the borders of the page to as small as possible, to avoid possible loss of parts.

too much for one newsletter.. we may have to start going weekly..
... or respect the two weekl rule  :tellme:

Some great threads there. Unfortunatelly some had to be left out. If someone feels something is missing, please post here and it'll be in the next one!

Ok, great work, it's fantastic to see so much great stuff going on in the forum!

[/offtopic]I never got it, why do people say *nix, of *u*x, or something else instead of unix?[/offtopic]

jgpaiva: you don't need to format, check out the windows built-in tool "convert"... run it from a cmd.exe box.
Ok, that was a great tip! I had totally forgotten about that utility! Just used it, and it was just perfect. Thanks!

I tested this a bit, and got to the conclusion it's too uncertain to actually be used.
When I can listen to it (i'm 21), my mother also can (she's 45). Another bad effect about it is that if i had a ringtone like this, i probably would go mad and knock the cell phone against a wall, as even my slow, low, not irritating ringtone drives me mad!

« Last post by jgpaiva on June 14, 2006, 05:52 AM »
I forgot to mention. Here's an useful real context of the usefulness of this tool.

I have a tree structure to organize my university classes. A bit like this:

-IST
  -2005/2006
    -1st semester
      -one class
      -another class
    -2nd semester
      -one class
      -another class
  -2006/2007
    -1st semester
      -one class
      -another class
    -2nd semester
      -one class
      -another class
  -e-books

See the e-books directory? That's where i store the e-books i have for each of the classes. But i also like to have them in the class directory itself, so that i can connect each e-book to each class. To avoid having repetition of the files, i can just create a hard link for each one in each of the directories. This could be done with shortcuts, but it'd be displayed as a shortcut, the advantage of hard links is that it looks like the real file is there.

The difference is that i could create a hardlink for e-books in each of the other directories, and when i opened it in explorer, it'd look like the directory is actually there, inside each of the class directories. And if any change is made to it, the e-books directory is changed too! :D

What a fun idea!
I like the way the stick figures go to the other cubes, very nice!
I'd like to see it in action, i couldn't find a demo.

General Software Discussion / Re: soft and hard links in ntfs
« Last post by jgpaiva on June 14, 2006, 05:37 AM »
I just found yet another usefulness about it.
Instead of duplicating stuff, you can just create a hard link (or would it be a soft link? i still don't get the difference).
The computer acts in a different way than with a shortcut. This is important. when you make a hard link, you get a "duplicate" of the directory you link to. Not like a shortcut that would take you to the other directory. BUT, it's not a really duplicate, if you change something in one of them, the other one also reflects it.

What i really mean is that in windows explorer, if you create a hard link, and then open it, it won't change directories to the destination, the directory will actually be in the place of the shortcut. I think this is the most usefull part of it. (actually, db also mentioned this, by saying it creates mount points, but i like to repeat what other people say)

I installed the program and played a bit with it. It's most useful, now i only need to format my other disk in ntfs :(
(as i'm extremelly dumb, last time i installed linux, i formated my "archive" volume as fat32, so that i could read from it while in linux. but never really had an use for it)

I'm not sure about this, please correct me if i'm wrong.
I belive a hard link also allows you to have a a better organization, I mean, you can have like the root of D:\ with files from the whole filesystem.
It'd make it easier to install stuff, as to install something in a deep place, you could only have a hard like like "d:\place", and you wouldn't have to be browsing for it, as it would be resolved if you'd just type in "d:\place" in the destination box.

Gothic if i'm wrong, please correct me, as i haven't tried hard links myself, because i didn't give myself the work. (but if i'm right, i might rethink this ;))
3621
Ok... Just a few conclusions:

The "button on title" idea i had before, isn't worth the trouble. It'd bring new, awful bugs, and wouldn't be the right solution.
I've rethought it, though. How about if it worked like this: when you drag a window by a place closer to the top left of the title (closer to the icon), the window is snapped. Otherwise, it's moved as always. This would also fix the problem with the maximizing windows by double-clicking the top bar not working.
I've discovered why the grid doesn't appear on the bottom of your screen, it'll be fixed on the next version (i hope ;) ).

i still hope that you can somehow implement all the different ways but allow the user to select which they want
That's the thing, there are some methods that are incompatible between them. That's why i'm trying to figure out a "perfect" way to make it work. I'd like your opinion on what do you think are the best working methods we've found till now.

Yes, betting on Portugal might not be a good idea! (you never know what's going on inside those players' heads :S)

I've just found this page: http://www.billism.c...ndemail.html?yjq=xvo which has a bunch of random-generated e-mails for spam bots. I simply love these pages, they make me feel that at least, some people try to do something against it :)
