General Review Discussion / Re: Vote for what Review to do Next
« Last post by mouser on September 02, 2005, 03:35 AM »
ehehehe.

on monday we will have a giant review of archive management tools.
then maybe a small review of open/save dialog box extenders,
then we will try to do note taking apps.

it is a huge category - but i think for good reason - it is an extremely useful tool to have, far too few people realize how useful.
i haven't given too much thought to how to break it down, but i'm open to suggestions.

i myself was a happy user of jot+, for its simple no-nonsense interface, but i bolted when they wanted to charge me to upgrade.

it could be string length or some other filename issue.

basically screenshot captor saves all its captures to disk, it doeesn't try to keep them in memory.

and currently (i am fixing it now), it does not report an error on file save.

what most certainly was happening with you is it was having an error when it tried to save the file and was not complaining, just discarding the image after the failed file save attempt.

in next version it will complain if it cant save the file, so that should clear that up.

i will also attempt to truncate file names so that file name length isnt an issue.

nice links rjbull.
there sure are a lot of note taking programs, it's a giant catgory.
but unless there is a giant review that looks at every program and tries to identify the best, there's a need :)

Find And Run Robot / Re: Feature Request - Find folder names
« Last post by mouser on September 01, 2005, 07:41 AM »
yes, folder search is definitely planned, though we have yet to settle here on the best way for user to tell f&r that folder results are wanted.

i plan to implement modifiers + commands in the upcoming week.

after that i will try to do folders and more search options.

not to hard to write - main thing as usual is how to let user specify what to do.

i think i have an idea that will work i will try to implement it.

there are a couple of other nice apps that also do this pan and zoom effect (sometimes known as Ken Burns effect for its use in the famous civil war documentary):

theres also another well known company that released a tool for this but i havent heard much about it in a while and i can't remember the name..

cliff, i think people here would really love your newsletter and newsletter archive - it's exactly the kind of site that we all appreciate:

do you think we could move this thread to the living room if you don't mind, and rename it
"Cliff's Notes and The Form Letter Machine"

ps.
since you're an honorary member now you should get the universal non-expiring key on the key page.

if you want to see the key a non-donating/honorary member would get just let me know and i'll (temporarily) set you back to a non member so you can try it.

i love it reading stuff like that! and so nice when someone finds a program useful.

ok let me explain the new license key idea we are trying.
basically our intention is to keep the software freeware but encourage people to donate (we have learned that without active encouragement no one does).

so basically it works like this, if you make a donation to the site of any amount (even of 1 dollar), you get a single universal license key for all our apps that never expire.

if you don't want to donate, or aren't ready to, that's ok too.  to get a key in that case, you sign up at the forum, which you already have, and then visit the license key page here:  https://www.donationcoder.com/Keys/

as a non-donating member you then select which app you want a key for and it will generate one for you on that page, based on your forum login name.  You then paste that into the program's about box.

the freeware license key's currently last 180 days from generation, after which you must visit that Keys page again to download a new one (or download a new one whenever you want, there is no limit).

--

i should say two things, first this freeware license key thing is new for us, and we are open to adjusting it based on feedback - we want to encourage people to donate but not punish people for not donating.  So youll see on that page it says that if you have decided not to donate, just email me and tell me why and i will give you full license.

we may also remove the 180 day expiration on freeware keys if it proves too painful for people.

---

in summary - we want our programs to operate as freeware, with no nags and no limit to usage.  we are currently experimenting with the idea of freeware license keys that last for 180 days (6 months) as a way of periodically having users come back and visit the site and to get them to consider making a donation.

i look forward to any feedback you might have.

and i'd love to hear any suggestions you might have for it.

by the way, it's designed for commandline use as well, and we have a beta version of a plugin for thebat that makes it super easy to generate replies from within the bat, if you're interested.

ps2.
i have made you an honorary member of the site, in recognition of your website dedicated to freeware :)

i just love it when skrommel codes up something like this as if it were nothing.

i hope people who are reading this forum realize that skrommel just makes it look easy - you could spend a week trying to find someone to code this and have no luck.

any way we could get the key pressed to display in a really big text font, like half an inch high, etc. or is that not so easy with ahk?
