Find And Run Robot / v1.07.02 beta - with regular expression commands
« Last post by mouser on September 06, 2005, 03:41 PM »
ok, this is kind of a big deal.

an early beta of F&R with support for regular expression commands in aliases is now available for testing.  expect it to not work perfectly :)
i'd love to hear if anyone configures anything nice.

heres an example of how you might use such a thing.  i set up an alias to do web searches of either google or google groups, as i choose:

Best Text Editor / Re: UltraEdit 11 - Best text editor?
« Last post by mouser on September 06, 2005, 03:34 PM »
SciTe is an excellent editor, as you say most definitely focused on editing source code for programmers - that's really why it didn't get much attention in our review.  One of the best things about it is that its not just open source, but well supported on multiple platforms.  It's part of a project that includes a text editor component that can be used in building other tools (SCIntilla).  Definitely a fantastic project.

[thanks for the heads up about column mode, i'm updating the review to reflect that information now].

Living Room / Re: paypal announces new micropayment system
« Last post by mouser on September 06, 2005, 02:58 PM »
i think its total payment.

10% might sound heavy but its much better than the going rate for transactions under $2.

right now paypal is currently the cheapest rate of all the services i know, and they take a commission of something like 3% PLUS 30 cent minimum.  its the minimum that kills you for such low payments, and paypal is much better than most.  some of the shareware services want to take like $2 minimum.

so the key to micropayment being good for receiver is to reduce the minimum.  since the micropayment is "5 percent plus 5 cents per transaction", thats pretty darn good.

could be good news for donation based sites that want to accept small payments without incurring high processing fees.

well construct them on the fly fine, but have a way to let them dock into the pre-existing toolbar instead of taking up a row of their own.

ive seen that toolbar opening on its own row before with powerpoint addins and it is so damn annoying.
why is it always microsoft apps that have trouble behaving well on their own operating system!
i mean sure, they are 3rd party addins but its MS responsibility to make a sensible plugin system that wouldnt be prone to this.

Screenshot Captor / Re: 2.0 Beta problem: cannot find Chinese fonts in Text objects
« Last post by mouser on September 06, 2005, 11:51 AM »
i put up a little test, can you try it here:
https://www.donation...nshotCaptorFTest.exe

it can be installed on top of existing installation.

the only thing i added is a new little font "button" on the text; try that and see if it shows chinese fonts in it.
if so, see if you can select them and type with them in text boxes.

hi,

i really must move my apps to be more friendly to translation and internationalization; i plan to do it, i just have to set aside some time to learn how to do it properly and then do it.

however i *think* it might be possible to add chinese text fonts to screenshot captor, without too much trouble; i will try to look into it and report back in the next day or two.  are you available to help test out the program if i try to get it to work?

Mircryption / Re: PGP Components fatal error
« Last post by mouser on September 06, 2005, 08:48 AM »
but like i said, ill update mpgp this weekend and hopefully that will solve your error, in case you do want to use mpgp (which is more secure than fish addon if used properly).

« Last post by mouser on September 06, 2005, 08:48 AM »
assuming you have pgp installed, it looks like i need to rebuild mpgp for the new pgp components; i will try to do it this weekend.

however, i should say that mpgp is not used much by people, just because it requires pgp and is complicated to use.

overwhelmingly, people use instead the mcpsfish addon for exchanging keys.
its installed by default when you install mircryption, you just have to load it via the instructions in the readme:
"
STEP 3D: If you want to install the 3rd party fish key exchange addon
     (recommended),    type: /load -rs mircryption/mcpsFishDH.mrc"

Find And Run Robot / Re: Feature request v 2- favorite searching
« Last post by mouser on September 06, 2005, 06:49 AM »
just a quick note of clarification -
f&r will currently happily search your ie bookmarks by title (ie bookmarks use title as filename).

the only issue to be implemented is being able to search on the url inside the file.

i'm a huge fan of the right-click menu, apps with good right-click support and drag-n-drop support always make me happy.

one of the programs that i have the most love for in terms of user interface is Beyond Compare, which we awarded best file compare/merge tool here: https://www.donation...pareTools/index.html

General Software Discussion / Re: For Developers: Do Donations Make a Difference?
« Last post by mouser on September 06, 2005, 01:11 AM »
sounds nice -
like i was saying there is some real "muddlement" in the definition of donationware.

most people seem to refer to donationware any software whose author asks users to consider making a donation.

this seems to me totally useless as a definition.  it says nothing about the program at all.

to me it makes more sense to say a program is donationware if it REQUIRES a donation but the donation amount is left up to user.

if it has no restrictions at all then its freeware, regardless of whether author asks for donations or not.

i usually refer to our software here as freeware, since you do not have to donate to use it, though with our new freeware license key system that requires signing up at the forum in order to get a freeware license to remove the nag, one would be justified in calling in registerware.

like you, we are trying to find a nice way to do things here that keeps the software available to everyone, especially those who can't donate, while still encouraging those who can to contribute financially to help support the project.

please keep us updated on what you decide to do and how it goes.. i'd really like to see donation-based software play a bigger role in things - i think if people were more willing to donate for software they liked, they'd find much more quality software becoming donationware instead of shareware, which ultimately benefits the end users the most.
